So in 56 years, 145 people have died from this? So this is rare? So you guys are giving up swimming now?
Ha,..guess the no1 killer in the history of humanity so say the scientist????they are responsible for half or more than all the deaths of all the people to inhabit the earth,...
We have what I think is a new(er) issue up here called cyanobacteria, deadly to pets and waterfowl. Went to take the dogs swimming a week or so ago and there were signs warning folks to not swim or wade and keep pets out of the water. It is found where ever there is blue-green algae. I called a fella I know that works for NH DES, and they seem to think it is caused by excess phosphates in the water from fertilizers and failing septic systems. Sucks.
This weekend, a friend's dog got sick after swimming in a 'treated' lake. Seizures and spots on skin. They got her treatment, as of last night she was doing well. Going to vet for spots.
Only 4 have survived. Here is how the amoeba attacks: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/07/how-brain-eating-amoeba-kills/594964/
Vibrio vulnificus bacteria.....lots of people do die every year from it....mainly immune compromised people but that could just be someone who drinks more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day...liver compromised....so eat a warm water oyster and good luck. Also if you have an open lesion and go into salt water over 85 deg...you are at risk. I worked at FDA (seafood) for 35yrs so I know a little about this..... I was scraping barnacles off my boat a few yrs ago in Aug and cut my thumb....lesion kept on growing....finally stopped. Nasty stuff....
Seems to me that this organism has to get deep up your nose to do any damage, so the simple solution is to wear nose clips. https://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Liqui...ocphy=9058679&hvtargid=pla-318087597580&psc=1
