It's not painted on the car but I refer to my car as the BIG PIG. even have some of my friends calling it that now.
My first car, a '62 Grand Prix, raced under the name "The Saint" but was really "The Magnet" since more cars crashed into it than the walls at Darlington!
"Scrap Iron Screamer" has always been one of my favorites! Maybe one day I'll have a car with "RATROASTER" on it, but that won't be until I can pull in some 11 second ET's :Brow:
I agree, the nicknames give the cars and the drivers character. If it is a fast and cool looking car, with a nice paint scheme and a nickname to boot,it is tough to forget. That's the whole idea. :TU:
A little history about the nickname "Scrap Iron Screamer". Fellow board member Vinny Riggio, (Olds F-85 on the board) coined the name for Mike Modena's car years ago. Because Mike's car was so rusty at the time, Vinny commented..."that car is a scrap iron screamer" and the name just stuck. Mike never wanted to paint it. He liked the rough look of it. He reluctantly painted in a blue tinted primer because of pressure from Rich Lasseter. From what I remember, Mike wasnt going to be allowed to complete in the GS Nationals if it wasnt painted. The primer was a protest of sorts. BTW... Is Mike on the board? Maybe we can take up a collection and buy him a computer! Jason
I almost forgot about Jim Ramsey's 65 GS race car "Shangri-la" . Maybe Jim can post a pic of the car from "back in the day". Jason
Some of the car names I remember from Englishtown when I first started racing include "Grounds for Divorce", "Jackie's Toy", "Bud Man" (old Mopar owned by a guy named Bud, painted red like a can of Bud beer) , "Just Plain Ugly". Two original names I did come up with for my car would be "Every Last Dime" or "All Of It". That way when people ask me how much I've got into my car, I would just point at the side of the car without saying a word.
One of my favorite ones would have to be "Big Bad Buick", think it was Scott that owned that car and it was a 65? Right Doug?
car names Well Doug you know my favorite name for a race car is .........................(THE TORQUENS OVER) Because its mine !!!!!!!!
It wasn't true then, and it's not true now. Scott NEVER, EVER went faster than me. I told him so when he had the cajones to show up in Bowling Green with that ridiculous slogan painted on the hood of his car! o No:
the "widowmaker" name of my car club and the name of the fastest car in my area back in the late 60's my autobody teacher told me about it he said it was undefeated on the streets for like 4-5 years then he lost to something i forgot what but he said it was a 69' camaro that was built like all hell i dunno the guys name that owned it but my teacher said the guy that owned it lost 1 race
Come on Doug, I think he went 8:72 with the fogger NOS set-up! Just kiddin' ya, Though he did have an 8.somthin' timeslip on the nitrous with the fogger set up, (wait a min. thats the intake thats on my Regal now!, plugs in the intake runners and all!) See ya in a couple weeks!!!
"Thumper" was also one of my favorites for my 70 GS,been toying with the idea of calling the Hawk "Thumper 2" . Our current ride is "Greatscat",kept the name as is since it was campaigned ,and known, that way in the 60's and 70's in stock and super/stock wars. When it was repainted we did'nt put Gus back on the side, maybe we should have ,to go with the S-cat theme. gary
Heres a thread about the original GS meet in Buds Creek Maryland. You can see a couple of photos of Jim Ramsey's 65 and a Wildcat named "Tons A Fun" Theres even a pic of "Little Joe"! here
Re Nicknames Doug - Bite me ! Defected ??? Gary I liked Thumper too . This was the first ever Iron vs/Alum Stg 2 run .
Hi, A friend that races at our local track has a high 7s rear engine rail that is named "never satisfied". He also had the name on his old race car, a tube framed 70 gs. I got alot of the stuff in my engine from him when he went to Chevy power. Tom
Dave Great picture,we sure had a lot of fun with those cars. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, when we were both a lot younger .But no wiser! gary
