I took off my edelbrock air filter and went back to stock.now I'm runnin real rich, so much it kins burns my nose. How rich do the 350s like to run? I was thinkin of turnin the a/f screws in a bit. Thanks:beer
hook up a vacuum gage. only go rich enough to achieve your maximum vacuum at the idle rpm you want. Thats the best setting imo. whats your carb jetted like?
Its not pressure, its vacuum measured in inches of mercury. At what idle speed is that at? If its at 700 rpm, thats pretty damn good
right ou: yep about 700-750 it even is more responsive w/o the high flow air filter. the little 2 banger suprises me. still I wanna get a q-jet setup after the engine rebuild
That is a good reading however do as Ken says and re-tune the idle mixture screws. I sent you an e-mail before about how to do that...
thats the retune Sean. :beer remember what it was back then? well this is after the two rocker arms and a passenger valve cover gasket. way more stable then the one posted in my cardomain link in my sig:beer page 2
So I would try leaning it out a bit to see if your rich smell goes away. Make sure all of your plugs are getting spark because that coul cause the smell as well. Do you have any fouled plugs?
Thanks I try Carb is a 2 banger stock jetting That's my highest vac in idle. Not sure about the plugs I know I only have 25k on them. Can I just pull a pug at a time and ohm test them ir is there another way?
I ment to say can I ohm test the spark plug wires? If so what's a good ohm reading? I have accel wires
I would question the accuracy of that vacuum gauge. I have never seen a stock well tuned engine pull more than 18 or 19 inches of vacuum at idle. Does the gauge go to zero when it's disconnected?
yes it goes to zero. I've tested it along with one from school so accuracy is not an issue. if you check out page 2 in that cardomain link in my sig you'll see the before I changed two rockers and a valve cover. that used to be the highest I could get it to go, but now its obviously higher.:TU:
The easiest way is to use a timing light to see if each wire is firing. Also run the car in the dark with the hood open and look for arcs of electricity that may be shorting before the plug gets the juce.
A more accurate way is to check the wires using a DVOM to check resistance. Anything under 11k ohms is typically good You can also take a squirt bottle filled with water and spray the wires down. Ive had cars stall out and wouldnt restart doing this. I'll dig out my AC Delco hand held spark plug wire tester from the garage and post a pic.
turn it in (clockwise) to lean the mix. Controls fuel not air the screw has a tapered end that you are threading into a small orifice, restricting the idle fuel.
