Jim has language in the policy allowing for exceptions to that rule, with mod/admin approval first. I agree, there WILL be instances where a seller and potential buyer can't come to terms, and the seller needs to have an allowance to go to the next in line. Could be any number of legit reasons for going to the next in line, but needs mod/admin approval first. That's how I read it anyway.

Time for my 2 cents worth.

I have read most of the replies to Jim's original message and think that we letting a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

I have always considered this board a forum for Buicks and Buick discussion. It is a chance for me to see and learn and share "Buicks". And it has been a rare occasion for me to buy or sell a part with someone else who shares my Buick passion.

If I want to sell something and have determined a fair price then that is how I listed it. If I have something that I want to sell and hope that there are multiple buyers who want to bid for it, I have listed it on Ebay.

I think this board needs to stay the same as it has been. Don't turn it into an Ebay style high bid forum.

Let's share our info, our pride in our rides, our spare parts with established pricing and let the bidding go to Ebay where it belongs.

The for sale sections are staying the same as they have always been, except for the moderation of new threads.

It was written policy for a long time, before I had to deal with other issues in the for sale fourms, the only difference is now I have spelled out the policy more clearly.

Common courtesy dictates that if you offer a part for sale, you will sell it to the first person who accepts your offer.

If we were all standing under a tent, and you offered a part, and a guy came up with the cash in his hand, how many of you would look at him and say "OK, well you have the money I wanted.. now who will give me more".. I dare say very few of you, if any.

I have in fact been made aware thruout the course of the last year that there have been a number of folks who are taking bids for there parts, regardless of what they put in the post. It is not the majority of sellers, but it is not one or two isolated case either. The current situation is just merely the most recent one. A growing number of folks have lost money trying to buy parts, and it's a trend we need to nip in the bud while it is still a small problem.

All we are doing with the moderation is merely making sure the thread has all the required info, and giving the mod team a chance to make sure the seller is aware of the policy. Furthermore it makes it more of a issue for bogus sellers to use the board. This is a small situation at the moment, but is going to get larger, as the board increases in size, and draws more attention.

So the moderation thing is more pro-active than reactive, which I think you guys would appreciate, since if I let this go till we have a really big problem, there will be a bunch of you out parts and money.

There will be no changes beyond this, trust me if we can't make this work, I will just eliminate the classifieds all together. This board was not created, and is not supported by users, to have a place where unscrupulous sellers and buyers can take advantage of the focused group of Buick enthusiasts.

The classifieds are an afterthought, and if they become an issue which will divide the community, due to shady buyers and sellers, they will cease to exist.

The stepped up enforcement of our long held "honor system" is quite an overhead in time for the moderators and I, with over 3900 parts for sale posts last year, we will be busy, but I see this as the only way to operate the board in the best interests of the established users who contribute to it, with knowledge and funding.

Truth be told, I don't want to babysit the cars and parts for sale sections, but I want to see members getting scammed even less.

Andy, we are not disgruntled rather just wanting a fair shot at was rightfully ours since we were the first to post. We are not the first to have this problem in the boards history, and we won't be the last. If it was this cut and dry then we would be able to remove a specific few and then the problem would seize. And we all know that will never happen. The problem is abroad and not just two isolated incidents. I have seen quite a few people step forward after this thread started and say they have had problems too. Me and Chris just happened to be the first in awhile to let the cat out of the bag. We knew we would catch some heat for doing so, but we took that risk in order to level the playing field for all on this board. It's like a marriage, for rich or for poor. Our money is as good as everyone else's, and we just want to be treated fairly. :beer

clarification... the first guy that responds to the thread with a public post.. we hashed this out years ago.. and at least once a year since then.

There are times when I want to keep my personal business just that. I guess if I really want something then my business will be come public knowledge??? Somehow that doesn't seem fair.

    Harvey,

I understand the need for some to not want to broadcast to everyone that they are collecting parts for a new project.

Simply create a new login on the board, to be used specifically to "get in line" for purchases, and once your number is up, you then can tell the seller who you are. This will protect your privacy on the open board. All you need to do this is another email address, and they are free and available from a number of internet sources such as hotmail.

I have bought alot of parts on this site, as a way to help in the restoration of several vehicles.

In the last 3 years I have heard of only 2 instances when someone has tried to offer more than what the post was, and what I agreed to pay for the item. In one case a current board member ( I wont name any names) called the seller, and offered $1000 dollars over our agreed price. The seller is a man of his word and refused the offer, and I did recieve the part.

If all of us on this board can be forthright and honest in our dealings, then I see absolutely no need to modify the current system.

Yes, that is absolutely correct.... :TU:

While instances of abuse are still reasonably few in number, they have been growing at an alarming rate.

I knew of a number of instances in the last 4 months or so, but since this has been brought up, I have had emails an phone calls from folks who have told me about a whole bunch more shady things going on.

Problem is, this has been happening for a while, but a lot of folks are reluctant to report it, or don't have any concrete proof.

While I agree that the vast majority of transactions come off without a hitch, I always knew that at some point in time we would have to focus more attention on the classifieds.

I am of the opinion that you put out a little fire with an extigusher, instead of watching it grow until you have to call in the fire department.

When I read this thread is just kinda makes me sad. We all know where this came to a head. The guy came here, offered his parts, took the first offer he got that said 'I'll take it" and its done.

He could have come back to explain they were sold but didn't. Why would he? he's selling all his project parts, he probably is already pi**ed off and has no interest in coming back and reminding himself that things aren't going good.

But the complaining is unreal. If I had seen that ad I would have taken everything on the spot, no questions, no pictures. Its NOS after all (used is another story). Somebody got them, somebody is happy, be happy for that guy who can build his project. You missed the parts. Early bird gets the worm. Get over it.

If you don't feel you can't trust the people here to make deals with, that is your call. You have believe the guy has good intentions, or don't buy/sell here.

My NOS stuff will go on e-bay after watching this fiasco!!

    Hi Jim
Thanks for the "work around". I guess if anything ever comes up, be it a car or part that I want to keep private, I will do that.
    Happy New Year! :beer

Tim as far as I know I was the early bird. The guy told me that I was first in line on the sill plates. It shouldn't matter if I asked 1 or 20 questions about the part because I told him upfront that if they were in great condition that I would take them. Not all NOS parts follow under the guidelines of being in perfect condition. I have been through at least 10 different sets of New GM and NOS sill plates combined and could not find a decent set. Many of the New GM ones have a factory defect along the means of a crease, and shelf wear and the moving around of NOS parts can take a toll on these things. It could have been as easy as dealing with the first person in line. I kept posting everyday to his mailbox to make sure he was realy thinking I was serious, but obviously someone undercut me on the part and that is cool with me now since JW helped me acquire another NOS set. I think my outcome was to aid in the reinforcement of the sticky within that section, so I am content with the outcome. :)

But you don't know for sure. Only 1 person does. I'm quite aware of NOS parts and how they can be banged around over the years, none the less there was a condition put on the sale in his eyes. That creates doubt, and if someone was there at the same time and siad "I'll take em" then its all over. Not saying right or wrong, thats the way it is.

Glad it all turned out ok.

PS Interesting on the NOS sill plates, I bought mine from GM and they are fine.

    Why so secretive????

Why are some people upset that someone will see that they purchased a steering wheel ,core support, etc. :Do No: You do understand the vehicle isn't invisible at stoplights-right... :Brow:

Andrew, you were not the early bird. I bought those sill plates along with a pile of other stuff seconds after James spoke up about the inner wheel wells. yeh I did not post on the thread, I went directly to the seller VIA email. Is that a violation of the rules? after all the fush you and Chris have raised I guess it is now. If you want them I will give them to you, you can buy them from Year One still in the wrapper. The last couple of weeks of this back and forth whinning has embarrassed me as a V8 Buick member. Even more embarrassing is the slamming of Jon Cain. He could have sold that stuff on E-bay and made twice the money but he took the time to offer it up to us first. There will always be people who were at the right place at the right time. I got lucky this time. I have been at the other end many of times and missed out but that's life.

    I don't like it!

I don't like that idea since I think mutliple IDs is what causes the confusion in the first place. I have sold several items that I had too many replies to and it was sometimes hard to be sure who I was actually coresponding with since people have mutliple email addresses work, personal, wifes, kids, etc... along with the PMs and posts.

Please keep the "Parts for Sale" ads the way they are. See the results of your poll.

The aspect of this that I have a problem with is the concept that someone can say "I'll take it, incidentally I need to see some more pictures and have some questions answered." To my way of thinking that's not a firm first offer.

I've run across this before, and pressed the seller to sell at the offer price subject to no more information than was in the advert. Personally I don't think this is undercutting anybody. Again, if an offer is subject to getting more information then it isn't a firm offer in my opinion.

Sometimes I've offered publicly and sometimes in PM. Usually PM if I have questions related to my particular application for a part, specifics of the car for sale, etc. That's not a firm offer (see my own definition above) but depending on what I get back for info, a PM firm offer reply is possible

They might be fine for your application, but I wanted NOS ones, not New GM. The NOS ones have rivets on the Body by Fisher tag, and the New GM's are glued on. I suppose I am an anal person when it comes to cloning my car.

Pop a couple rivets in and you're good to go...its all in the details.

    I have..

Just encouraging the good faith dealings in the way it has always been, to the best of my ablility, to eliminate the confusion and strife that has been part and parcel to the "for sale" sections for a long time.

And with new thread moderation, working to stem the tide on a growing trend I have seen, in recent months.

    No big deal..

Thanks for bringing it up, Jim. We've got a pretty good thing going as it is. Many thanks for keeping this board the best in BUICKUSA.
