I'm an IDIOT. I was making an attempt to remove the stainless around the windshield so I could do some cleaning, etc. With the trim removal tool, I inadvertently hooked the edge of the glass and started prying, when all of the sudden a crack starts appearing from under the trim. :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: It's only a couple inches long at this point, but I have a feeling it will grow with time. Are these windshields sold new?? Mine is pretty puckered up from rocks hitting it, and I'd realy like a new one anyway. IDIOT = ME :spank: Way to throw a couple/few hundred dollars down the toilet. Oh well, it's a good way to get that dime out of the corner of the dashboard that's been stuck there since I bought the car. IDIOT!
Well, I just scheduled an appointment with Safelite Auto Glass to come out and replace the whole thing for $220. I figured it's worth it for them to replace the whole thing since it's really pitted all over the place. And the fact that they will come to my house on a Saturday and replace it here for nothing more than if I were to take it to them.:beer As week from now, I will have a new windshield! I love online shopping:grin: (pending they actually can GET the windshield...but they had it in their listing, so I hope they have it!)
Yup, windshield glass doesn't bend too easily. ou: Tried something similar a few years ago on a parts car, except I used a screwdriver instead of trim tool. :eek2: Can you say instant crack, oh well, got to try something I'd always wanted to do. :Brow: Out comes Mr. BFH, let's see just how far we can embed him into that safety glass.  :error: Good thing your windshield is still available for a decent price. :TU: :TU:
Adam, Whenever you do something that you think is really stupid, just stop and say to yourself." Well at least i didn't throw my carb away".You'll feel better instantly. Then call Yardley and say "Thanks".Tom
Adam, are you sure the windshield you will get has the same colour (mine has a "smoked" stripe on the top). But may be I am wrong and all windshields are the same, with dyed glass and the stripe on the top. o No:
Hey Smartin, Does your car have the antenna in the windshield??? If so, make sure the guy drops the wires through the dash to hook up to your radio!!! My brother had a windshield put in his 71 Graqnd Prix and the jerk never dropped the wires so his radio doesn't work! :af: Maybe call and make sure the replacement windshield has the antenna if that is what you need.
Yow! But hey, $220 ain't half bad for any windshield...a friend just paid $275 for a '95 Lincoln towncar glass. Years ago, I had mine replaced, and asked about getting rid of the in-glass antenna (I forget why). Apparently, they were available without the wires, but they actually cost $50 more. I went with the "regular" window, which had tinting and an antenna. I'll bet it's the same today.
I need to replace the windshield in my LeSabre. It appears that is easily had by several different glass places. They all asked if mine had the antenna in the glass as soon as I mentioned the year. It's under $250 installed, but it'll have to wait until next spring, too many other things to do before the snow starts to fly....
I tried to call last night, but they had a rude message that said they were closed and to call back tomorrow. Well, I got home at 9pm tonight, and forgot to call them today. I'll probably continue to forget to call them until Saturday morning when they show up at my door.
Smartin, you might want to check with your insurance company. They would most likely pay for the windshield replacement. Glass coverage is usually no deductible, (or relatively small) and glass is covered no matter what, even if you break it yourself by accident.
too much trouble...I'd rather just write a check and be done with it. I don't have time to deal with the insurance company if I can possibly avoid it:grin::spank:
Oh, I also checked today with Safelite - the windshield DOES have the antenna in it, and the tinting at the top. So I'm good to go! Saturday can't come soon enough. In two days, a 1960 Electra 225 convertible is finding its way into my garage for some R&R in the next couple months, I get a new windshield, AND I have a date.:beer:beer
Dude! Go out into the garage and ram your knuckles across something jagged and sharp, RIGHT NOW!!! That's just too many good things happening at once, something's bound to go wrong, and you might as well get it over ahead of time!!! (of course, after the exploding compressor, you may be due some good stuff, but you can't be too sure...)   :beer
Well, I do have some news that might throw off the good vibe tomorrow. The windshield guy called me today and told me that he has to ship it from Unobtainia, since they are uber hard to find with the antenna built in. So it will be in on Wednesday. Also, the family is considering putting our dog down on Saturday...no fun there. So I'll let you know around 5pm how I feel:grin:
Dayumm! What a diff 24 hours makes! Sorry about the windshield delay, but I'm more sorry about the family dog! Hope the date went well.
Well, it's 6:15pm...missed my 5pm update:grin: Besides having to put our dog to sleep, it has been a good day so far. I picked up a 60 Electra 225 vert for some work (see thread in classic buicks section) The date is at 7:30 tonight....gotta go get ready now..
Good luck, Mr. 9000. :TU: Sucks about the dog and the windshield, though. Better to get the right windshield than the wrong one... but there isn't much of a positive spin I can put on the dog situation
