Dave, we are on for this saturday no matter who wins or loses this should be a great game.
As far as the "fastest" production Olds I would have to check the box next to the 68 H/O for many reasons.
    1. Weight. Lower curb weight than a 69 H/0 or a 70w30
    2. Four hundred and fifty five angry cubic inches under the hood.Yes I know the 69 H/O and the 70,71,72 had them also. But they also had to haul more weight down the track.
3.The best air intake system during the musclecar aera.
    4. 500 foot lbs of torque. Yes again I know the others 69 H/O 70 w30 made the same but they're moving a heavier object.
5."D" cylinder heads. They're a little better than the others.
I know I'm giving up some power with running the factory log manifolds and cast iron intake but with the weight savings of this car I'll take it.
If we could turn back the clock to 1968 and have a 68 H/0 and a 66w30
67w30 I think the 68 would out run the other two due two the cubic inch advantage IMO. You may
disagree and that's okay your opinon is ALWAYS respect by me

II'll collect my five bucks at Mar  tin

Well, at least we agree on a coupla things, the 68 442/Hurst/W31 DID have the most effective Ramair system of the musclecar era. Bumper design had a lot to do with it. The 69's had parking lights down there which disturbed the airflow and you didn't really get the Ram effect even though you did get the cold air effect and the static pressure difference (like a cowl induction). Lower velocity equals higher pressure. But the dynamic ram effect of the scoops being right in the airflow more than overcomes that static pressure effect. Look at the scoops on Pro stockers or dragsters. They're way up high in clean air. The 68 Cutlass cars have lots of cool high velocity air coming down that massive front bumper right into the collectors.

On for $5, payoff at Martin. Also agree, whatever the outcome, it will be a great game. Just hope it isn't decided by crappy officiating like sometimes happens for P.C. purposes to control the crowds. (Mostly in Big Ten basketball, though). If they let them both play ball, it'll be fabulous. Carr says they're going to start off with an onside kick! :Brow:

This IS the national championship game, bowl games will be after the fact. But advertising bucks are just that.

No argument that bigger cubes are bigger torque. But the fastest production Olds in factory built trim is still the 66 442 W30. You get at least another 500 RPM (maybe even more) from the short stroke 400's and that's right up there at the horsepower peak. And they're a lot lighter. Mine's not a W30 (don't have $6k for an air cleaner even if you could find one). Wish we could run the W/Z, 69 and newer exhaust manifolds. Your 68 is better than the 65-67.

Should be very interesting. Going to start with my 3.90 gear, will go up to the 4.10 or 4.56 if the car wants it. Ramrod did.

I'll tell ya a story that will make you cry.(sorry Bob)
In the late eight's my friend Bob (the driver of the pacecar for the last couple of years) had the chance at a factory 67 w30.........for twenty five hundred dollars and he past on it. :Dou: The car was missing part of the ram air system and the orginal motor but it did run and drive.I believe it had a 425 4speed black on red. The car was in Mansfeild OH,just about an hour north of where your football team is going to lose tomarrow  I bring this story up quite offen to him :spank: I'm sure he'll jump in here any minute now and try to defend himself. Or he's going to bring up the fact that I had a 69 H/O in school and sold it

400's love to rev and get beyond the limits of their oiling system. With those huge main and rod bearings, that really becomes a time bomb. Fortunately modern technology has fixes for that today and will let you safely get up there in the outer limits of RPM's.

67 W30's were neat, too, but nothing like those 54 "massaged" 66 W30's that came off the line and right over to the Engineering garage. Most went right to the "non-factory sponsored"     race teams. 67's were rated at the same HP as the 66's even though they had a Qjet in place of the tripower. Thanks to Mother General edict.

Many of the drag cars had 425 parts in them as you could bore those early 400 blocks to the moon. Kinda think a few 66 GTO's had some 421 stufff in them, too.

DETROIT -- Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler has died, television station WXYZ is reporting.

    Schembechler
    He was 77.

Schembechler collapsed Friday during the taping of a television show and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

He became ill at WXYZ-TV in Southfield the day before the Ohio State-Michigan showdown, the station said. Schembechler also was hospitalized Oct. 20 after falling ill at the same studio.

Earlier Friday, Southfield police spokesman John Harris could not provide specific medical information, but said: "I don't think it was good."

Police were sent to the station about 9:25 a.m. with the city's fire department, and they escorted an ambulance to Providence Hospital, Harris said.

Messages were left with the university, Schembechler's office and the hospital.

Schembechler met with the media this week to discuss Saturday's game between the No. 1 Buckeyes and No. 2 Wolverines. He also talked about the device that was implanted to regulate his heartbeat after he was hospitalized last month. He said the device covered about half his chest, and doctors still were adjusting it.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and he doesn't go to road games anymore.

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He has had two quadruple heart bypass operations.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year had a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. His record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

I hear what your saying on the early
400's. In the back of my mind there's a 65 442(less weight) being build.A nice turquoise post car with a matching interior 4spd no power anything with a set of 391's out back would put up a good number. Plus I just read that the late 65's had a qjet on them. But the pacecar needs a frame off first

65's did not have Q jets on them in production. Tell him, nice try. The 66's ran circles around the 65's. Also much better valve train and shifter.

Sad news on Bo. That's the way to go, though.

    Frank,

Would have gladly taken that bet before this, but not now. Who knows what that team's going to do tomorrow. What a bummer. Kinda takes the fun out of it.

    Dave,
I agree, sad day. Seems like little pieces of my life keep dying or disappearing. Woody and Bo were two of a kind, along with Ditka. I hope OSU has enough class not to make anything out of this. Notre Dame wouldn't. I was born in Detroit, raised in Ohio, torn loyalties here.
At least we still (sorta) have Bobby Knight.
