To make it easier, the starter you want is the late model LT1 or LT4 chevy starter for a factory gear reduction style. They fit GNs too:)

I'm not really sure if it was mentioned or not, but there are two different Chevy starters. One has the staggered bolt pattern and the other is like the Buicks. These two different patterns have been around since the early 70's. I have a few staggered ones that I use as cores when I buy a new starter.

Chevy has 2 flywheels. Big and small. The staight across bolts fits the small fly wheel. This is the same as Buick. The stagered bolt fits the big flywheel on chevy. I have changed the front part that the bolts go though from angled to straight on the old style starters.

yes it is.however that is delcos first attempt at the gear reduction starter.i wouldnt recomend using that style,it's refered to as a pmgr (permenent magnet gear reduction).i sell the pg 260 to replace them,i wont even work on them anymore.the two main problems with the design are they used a metal planetary gear with metal drive gears, they are very prone to rusting.the second problem,if you look at the pic posted, the front housing is cast AROUND the solenoid.the only way to change it is to drill out the 3 dimples, beat the housing off the solenoid, press an aftermarket solenoid in and secure with sheetmetal screws thru the holes you drilled.if you try to order the solenoid from delco, you get the whole housing/solenoid set-up$$$$.
delco hasnt made that starter for years,go with the later model pg 260 style:TU:

Thank you for the info. I will write your number down for future reference and keep you in mind when I am ready to change this out. What is the pg 260 style? I am sorry I guess that I am not up to speed on some of this stuff. My old starter has been going good for years now but a better upgrade would be nice. How could GM use starter gears that would rust knowing half of the USA is under snow and for almost half of the year. But then nothing surprises me any more. GM just sells you a new one when they freeze up.

If it makes anyone feel any better i have taken a Chevy small block starter that was used with a 158 tooth flexplate and used it without a problem on a Buick 350, it bolted on with out shims and the Buick turned over nice and strong.

And by the way GM is GM is just so happens Buick has a better stroke to bore ratio then the Chevy
