Something is goofy with this air cleaner situation, I took a look at a picture I had taken of a 66 Electra which still had the air cleaner on the engine and it looks identical to what I just tried to install?!? I'm starting to wonder if something else is causing the engine to sit high, maybe the engine mounts are the wrong kind, or something is bent? The air cleaner that came on the car had been cut on the bottom to make the lid and main part fall over the cut bottom (plate) part, which now had a large air filter on it, instead of the smaller kind which I saw in the air filter box I just tried to install. I think this was some cheater way to get the air cleaner box to become lower. I can't see anything different between air filter housings in these two images? I ordered a 66 air filter housing from TopCat, hopefully he hasn't sent it yet, and he can measure it to compare it to the picture I have measuring the air cleaner housing (on p.39) I just tried to install. Also, does the 66 housing fit a large or small filter originally? Hmmm......
Kimson.....you would do better by posting a picture of the motor mounts and frame pads. If they are stock then there is NO way that this air cleaner will NOT fit......is there a carb spacer on the intake ? If the mounts are stock....this will fit.....it came off a 66 Wildcat. I suspect that the 64 cleaner sits taller on the motor because there was more clearence on a 64 under the hood. Peace WildBill I will check my parts book tomorrow to confirm there are different part #'s for 64 and 66 air cleaners.
This hood clearance situation is starting to bug me, but eventually everything will come together. Does the 66 have a large diameter filter? here are some pics of the motor mounts, doesn't look like it's some home fabricated stuff, so I'm guessing they're stock?
Kimson......why are the washers between the motor mounts and the block? Take the washers out.......those are definatly the stock frame mounts and rubber motor mounts. If this cleaner don't fit after you take the washers out.....i will eat it :Brow: Like i stated....i'm sure that the 64 and 66 cleaners are identical looking but the 66 was stamped to sit down over the carb more for additional hood clearence. Peace WildBill p.s.....did you find a glove box liner?
Cool.. I wanted to see if your liner was the more shallow kind for the non-ac cars? I haven't heard anything yet about the other one I asked about.
Been having a battery drain that's pretty severe. When I connect the negative, a clicking sound comes from what seems to be the voltage regulator. I also found out that these fuses have juice through them with no key in the ignition. If you leave the battery connected, it will drain enough so you can't start the car in a few hours. Any thoughts on this?
The air cleaner has also arrived, which would be the correct one for a 66 cat. We finally have hood clearance!!
TopCat might have to eat what I believe is a California smog pump hose. There was no way this would fit under there, it was in the way of this pump on the carburetor. Must have been some other version of carb on the California models?
The hood has also been installed, looking more and more like a complete car again.. Compared to what it used to look like..
I received the '64 air cleaner last Friday. Thanks! I will pm seperately. Regarding your efforts for hood clearance, I'll just add from my own experiences. I only seek and use exact correct applications for my own car. Stock is KING in my mind, especially when going to sell. I see that a lot of guys have a hodge podge of adaptations and I won't judge their choices, but I think there are a lot of us folks who want all original applications. But even more than that, your air cleaner was a good example of things looking the same, but not actually being the same. I have a dealer's parts manual that lists applications, and it has been invaluable. It is a '65 manual, so I cannot offer to help with your car, but you can always post here and have someone double check applications (in other words, what '66 parts can be replaced by '65 or '66, etc.) if they have a later manual. By sticking with stock applications, I avoid a lot of hassle, but I realize it is also, "to each his own". thanks, and good luck on the car.
Updates schmupdates.... I decided to start working on the quadrajet carb dealio that I took from a 66 Riv in a yard a while back. The plan was to sandblast the intake to take the paint off, and after spending $30 with a local shop we have a few grey parts laying around. One rear corner piece, thought it be easier to blast than sand/wire wheel off the paint One 66 Toronado air cleaner (w/ lid), which would be nice if it would fit, but it seems like the throttle linkage arm sticks out too far and interferes with the bottom of it. I guess that will go on ebay. The air cleaner I had on the car that burned with the dual snorkel arrangement that I put together. The paint on that was damaged in the fire, so I thought I'd throw that in there. I didn't do the lid for this since it was bare metal with a clear coat on it to begin with, and why not keep it that with some nice fire patina. The q-jet intake...
Had the carb rebuilt by someone who came recommended from several sources, Sean Murphy of SMI. It's coming together, I'll just have to fabricate the metal plate that goes between the carb and gasket to block some port on the intake, the metal plate I had previously picked up was too narrow.
Haven't fallen asleep here, just taken a little break... I received this new wheel, courtesy of Mark (TurboV6 ) yesterday and I guess that will be next in line to install. Thanks Mark!
Thanks! Today we got a black Wildcat steering wheel installed to match the interior. Thanks Mark (TurboV6)! The 4-note horns also fired up, seems to have been a problem with the contact in the wheel... Two down today, still quite a few to go.
Kimson, Did you use the springs from your other wheel to seperate the contacts? If you dont have them, I have a set I removed from another car over the weekend and can send your way. That will keep the horns quiet. Mark
