I was driving away and one of my bros told me me brake lights werent working. so today i checked everything out to see what was working and what wasnt. this is what i found:

turn signal works front and back
    flashers work front only
parking lights work front and back
    headlights and tail lights work

i replaced the old flasher 552 with a new one and still no brake lights

all the fuses look to be good also

what is going on??!!! i'm not trying to get pulled over

the only thing i dont know how to check is the signal-stat on the fuse block (not sure if that has to do with anything brake related)

bulbs look good too, is this a turn signal switch problem its driving me nuts!!!!

    Please help!

Have you looked at the brake light switch near the brake pedal?

Yeah, I had to replace that on my 68GS.

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

If the turn signals are out in the back too, I'd start looking in that direction. First thing to check is whether or not you get +12v out of the brake light switch when activated. The voltage goes from there, through the turn signal switch, then back to the rear lights. Make sure it's not something simple, like bad bulbs, easy to overlook. Does your car have hazard flashers?

Also check the dash to rear wiring harness PLUG near steering column. Frank

I saw it and it depresses and releases properly, it seems...dont know how else to check it?

My turn signal lights work in the back. How would i test the brake light switch? My bulbs all looked good, both filaments were intact on all, It just weird that the brake wont light on either side.

I do have flashers, but they wont flash in the rear, only in the front, they used to flash in the rear before this problem.

does this directly affect the brake lights? there is a lot of plugs down there, should i just check that they are taught together?

thanks guys. I would like to roll this weekend, and this is a great start. Please keep the tips coming! thanks

on another note...where can i find a replacement signal-stat 175 that goes on the fuse block? or can i replace it with a regular flasher? thanks

    alec296 i need another buick

my guess is the turn signal switch itself
ever notice when the hazzards are on and you set on brakes they stop flashing?
i have seen this before but cant tell from your info for sure

    i'll check that today.

where can i find a replacement signal-stat 175 that goes on the fuse block? or can i replace it with a regular flasher?

how do you test the turnsignal switch?

    alec296 i need another buick

get a schemtic and check for power at the proper terminals with everything
on and then see if power stops at any terminals when brakes are applied

As far as I know the flasher units are interchangeable between the signals and hazards. What you need is a multimeter. Then you can check down near the brake light switch. There are two wires, orange and white, I believe. One should have 12 volts all the time, the other only when the brake pedal is depressed (button pops out) Start there.

so i can take a round flasher from kragen and replace the rectangle one on the fuse block?

On my 70, they are the same. Take a look at the connections, your's may be too. See if it will fit.

yes they connections are exactly the same, two prong. I was just weary that the round standard flasher was not meant to go in that fuse block slot. Im assuming they serve the same purpose and amperage.

alec296: I noticed today that when my flashers are on and i depress the brake, they indeed do stop flashing. Does this mean the turn signal switch is bad or my stop light switch?

i have replaced everyhting, bulbs, new flashers, all fuses are good too...not im assuming all thats left is the brake switch and turn signal....

    alec296 i need another buick

    stop light switch is working
i does sound like a turn signal switch but the next thing you want to do is
get the color of wire that lights brake light
if you have a power probe(can send power into a circuit) or long wire attached to live 12 volt and see what lead lights up your brakes both at the light and at the switch connector
that will tell you if you have connection to switch
if you do have connection to switch i would get a switch
if not its in the wiring from switch to taillight

im not sure what you mean here.

So if i connect the red part of a jumper to the positive, bring it around the driver side, then connect a test light to the live jumper(this is all i really have to work with), touch it to the terminals on the now exposed brake switch, i should note which terminal light the brakes if any...correct? if none light up the rear then there is either A. a problem with the brake switch or B. a short somewhere between the front and rear of the car. is this what you mean or am i missing something? thanks for the help!

    alec296:

so i think i understood what you were saying. i pulled off the plug from the switch and found that the orange wire had the constant power at 12v. So i figured it was my parking switch that was bad, i then fed a wire into the hot side of the plug and put the other side into the white wire and the brakes did not come on.

does this mean i have a turn signal issue? thanks.
