Little late but I'll add my two cents. spent about 2 hours on my computer and made up a blank tag, used a text editor to insert the vin and date, then print on blue paper and use clear adhesive sheet..this is just like the originals as they only attached on the outer edge as well. Good enough for me, nobody will ever notice or look that close to see its not perfect. Save your money! (I should work for ING)! OK, so the real question is: In 72 they added the GVWR and GAWR to the sticker. I have one original copy off a 72 skylark with air. The vehicle GVWR matches exactly (5040) yet the front and rear GAWR were rounded up and down by GM compared to the assembly manaul official numbers. They do add up to 5040 rounded off (one up, one down). Pic attached. So the question is, for 1972 models, did they put the exact amount on the sticker, or simply round them off? Did they use the exact GVWR and round off the GAWR's or...??? Does anyone have another 72 sticker so we could compare the info?? Just need to know what kind of car and air or not. Thanks Tim PS 72 gs 455 ragtop GVWR is 5208....2541 frt and 2667 rear
I believe John Diaz posted a pic of his sticker in the other blue tag thread. Maybe that will help...
Tim It's in this thread (linked in post #21 of this thread) http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=75487
Guys...I found a guy who provides this service. He has the correct (so he says) font for these stickers. He's making me up 2 stickers for my 70 and 71 using the correct repro certification decals. As soon as I get them I will put up a picture and pass on the info. Stay tuned...
Several years ago I typed two of these for myself at an old job where the old fart boss kept everything including vintage typewriters! The type that worked the best were the old cloth ribbon types as the plastic ribbon types would just rub off. Wish I "borrowed" one of those typewriters$$$$$$$$$$$ Ken Lisk just ruined my day with the picture of his sticker. My build date was 03E and I put 03/71 on sticker. I guess I should have put 04/71. Must have been some down time between Fisher and Buick plants final assembly Oh well you learn somthing new here all the time. Now to do it up right I will have to get a new one and look for a typewriter like everyone else. Did anyone ever consider a custom made stamp with rolling numbers? Might work.
The guy I found charged me 22 bucks for the sticker plus the service of typing the info with a vintage typewriter. Didnt seem worth the trouble to try it myself for the money he's charging me. I cant wait to see the stickers. I hope they look authentic. I got my fingers crossed
Yup. Mine is 03D on the cowl and 4/70 on the blue sticker. Invoice date 4-3-70 per Wayne Robert's documentation.
I took the decal template I made 10 years ago for my 71 and added the 72 vert info to it. Looking at it beside original, the font is off a bit, not quite as large or bold, the gm logo needs some work (line too thin, letters too thin) but this thing cost me 50 cents to make. Print on blue paper (color is also off slightly but hey can pick any color you want and this is all I had today!), cut out, then lay on clear adhesive sheet and cut that out. This is exactly as GM did it, only the outer edge was stuck to door. The white bit around the edge is where the clear sticker material is not pressed on. Once on car you can press on hard and that all goes away...thinner paper would help too but this was just a test. I'm going to tweak the original decal template and make it more accurate. I figured it wasn't too bad for a graphic idiot. We'll see how much i can improve it. Tim
Ok- heres what I got- The font is a little off and the numbers look a little too "crisp". The originals have more of a fuzziness to them. Not a big deal. The only sucky thing is that the guy put a dash in the production date and not a slash! :af: I emailed him about it. If he's a stand up guy, he'll offer to send me two new ones done correctly. The picture is a little crappy because of the flash. Here they are- If the typo in the production date was corrected, I would'nt have a problem putting these on my cars.
Received an email back from the seller. He said he will send me two more stickers with the correct slash n/c :TU: . He apologized for the screw up. If anyone is interested his email is: windham50@bellsouth.net His name is Steve. BTW- The stickers he sent have the clear overlay already installed
He charged me 44.00 for both stickers shipped. but I dont know if he gave me a discount being as I bought two or not o No: . He has them listed on Ebay for 29.99 each
Latest revision...getting better, color is still slightly off, can't find correct font for the typewriter letters/numbers, can't find an old typewriter either!!LOL Still needs a few tweaks, but anyone looking that close better be invited! Also interesting how the different plants did different decals for the same year (72).
Jason, Are you sure the font looks correct for the '70 sticker? It seems that from the pictures Nick Sloop was posting that the 4s should be open at the top. Or do you have your original door tags to compare it to? o No:
