Are the '62 Skylarks not desirable anymore?

UPDATE - Car sold in January. Thanks for the interest.

I remember even 10 years ago, the Skylark was a desired and sought after car and even about 4 years ago, when we were looking for one, it was not an easy task or they were all far off, or high priced.

We finally bought a '62 Skylark 2dr hdtp for my mother that we were going to restore for her, but decided to make my dads '69 Camaro easier for her to drive and decided to sell the Skylark. However no one is showing interest in it, despite the low price for a restorable classic. I have placed it on the other Buick site, with NO interest and Craigslist, with some local interest and one guy wanted it, but my uncle could not find the title, so that guy is not interested now and one guy offered us $200 for the clock, but we want to sell it whole. I would even trade it for a restorable 71-73 DeVille or Electra, but still no interest from any Buick fans on Buick sites.

I am going to lower the price here, but if not sold soon, we may resort to selling the clock for $200 and crushing the rest of the car. I would hate that, but evidentally there is no interest in these anymore, unless its just where the economy is so bad, but it dont seem to stop people from buying other higher priced cars. True, its no show car and it needs ALOT of work, but the price reflects that.

So, does anyone know if the interest in these early Skylarks have declined and why?

    Thanks.

Checked out your ad, and I have a hard time believing it won't sell at your asking price. You've only had it listed here for a couple days, so don't rush to decide there's no interest. Give it some time.

That said, the car needs a TON of work, and a drivetrain. It will likely take a lot more to restore it, than it will be worth. I think in general the 50's Buicks, and the 65-ish and newer cars, are more sought after. However, such a car as yours, if local to me, would be worth taking a hard look at.

Thanks for that info. Well, I have advertised it locally on Craigslist for awhile now, with a few interested, but the lost title has the interest down locally. I dont think it would be hard to get a title though for a car this old. I think some states dont even require it on a car this old, but TN does. My uncle has misplaced it somewhere at his house or grandpas. ??

I will leave it here on the site for awhile to see what happens. I prefer to trade it for a old Cadillac or Electra of the early 70s in the same condition, which may not be impossible. Maybe someone has one of these setting in their lawn they have no interest in and wants a old Buick Skylark. :)

    Thanks again for that input.

I agree with the other David. Lots of people out of work, lots of others who are being a little tight with their money, just in case. Not a great time to be selling a project.
In my opinion, the price may be a little high for a 62 with no title in hand. Lots of people won't look at a rig that they can't have a signed title to, or they will pay very little for it.
62 isn't my favorite year, but if it were close and you had a title I would probably want to look at it. It sounds like a good solid project. I don't think there are a lot of projects that I would look at for $2,200 without a title in hand though. I'm not trying to be insulting by saying that to me the price may be high given the year and lack of title, I'm just saying that 62 isn't one of the hottest selling years, no title turns a lot of people off, and times are hard enough to make lots of people hold onto money pretty tight right now.
I would go down to the DMV and see if I could get a title, then be patient. I wouldn't part it out. As soon as you start down that road, you are going to find your self with a parts car, and not able to get the money out of it.
I would rather wait it out and try and get a title, or sell the parts separate from the car and use that money to be able to sell the car cheaper while still getting my money out of it.
I look at that car and think it would be a great street / strip car.

It will sell quicker if ya had a title, no one likes buying a car without one.
As it can be a PITA and you often have to still get the original owner
[Id guess you] to help get one.

Though check your state laws. Some places you can write a reciept on a used napkin and get a title with little proof that its not stolen.

    It's listed for $500.

Thanks for that input. I am guessing too its the economy and the fact the title is misplaced. Oh, as David mentioned, I am asking $500, not $2200. ;) I am not sure how much below $500 we should go. As mentioned, we were offered $200 just for the clock on the dash by a certain person needing one. It just seemed strange to me that about 5-10 years ago, even in poor shape, these cars were commanding high prices (as were most 2dr hardtop cars of the 60s), but seems like interest has fallen. I guess interests change over the years and the economy too. I wonder though if this was a '70 Skylark GS or a '69 Camaro how fast it would sell for $500 in this condition? ;)

Yeah, thats the problem locally. In Tennessee, a title is required. Some states, such as neighboring Alabama, a title on a car older than 1975 is not even issued. I have been told that a title can be obtained fairly easy for a old car for a fee. The title is somewhere. See, my uncle actually owns the car. He was going to sell it to my dad for $500, so he could restore it for my mom. He decided to just make their '69 Camaro easier to drive for her. My uncle said he would just sell the car for $700 (of course he said he would take $500 to break even) and asked me to try to sell it for him and he would give me some $ for doing so, or if I wanted to try to trade it for something for myself, I could pay him for the car and trade it off. He thought he gave the title to my dad, but my father said he didnt. We were thinking perhaps he took it in grandpas, but we have looked and looked. My uncle is a very disorganized person, so knowing him, it was probably tossed in the garbage, or blew out the truck window.

    Thats right. Thanks Dave. :)

Wow! $500. The cheapest 62 I saw on the other site was $2,200, and it was in Tennessee. It had new seats, red and black interior. Is that a different car or a new price?
Either way, I wish the car was about 2500 miles closer. A shame to see a car like that go away.

No, I dont know the car you are referring to... this car is like a tan/black. See link below and photo... Its not a $2200 car.... it needs total restoration, reflecting the price.

Whats that? I may have to try to get one before I can sell it.

I have been offered $200 for the clock, $50 for the hubcaps and trim and $50 for some misc parts. I prefered to sell it whole, but looks like I may have no choice but to part it and crush the remains. I will hold off a little while longer to see if someone may be interested in the entire car to restore... as mentioned in the ad, $500 or will trade for a 71-73 Cadillac DeVille 4dr or Fleetwood Brougham or 71-73 Buick Electra 4dr / Estate Wagon in restorable condition. Surely someone out there has one of these tanks they dont want and would like a nice little Skylark to restore before it gets squashed. :Do No:

I am going to try to get some new / updated photos tomorrow.

    Whats a broadway title?

    It may not matter....

Anyone needing parts, let me know. I think my uncle is going to start parting next week. The man down the road is getting the crusher to his junk yard and this thing will soon be heading there since there is no interest in it. One guy is supposed to look at it this week, but if he dont buy it, it will soon look like a pancake.

I am not very mechanically inclined, but will rip off what I can.

yeah i have to agree with what the others are saying. For $500 I'd buy it even if i couldn't get around to fixing it up for 10 years. However, without a title, no offense, I would laugh at you and walk away. If its even possible to get a title, it's not worth the hassle.

There was a beautiful low mileage old-lady driven 76 Bonneville I was going to buy once. Interior was mint. Engine ran like a top. No major dents or scratches on the exterior. I think they wanted $800 for it. Guess what? No title. "Nevermind." The original owner had died, no next of kin named, and there was nothing you could do about it.

Well, the title is a crazy issue. Its here somewhere within 150 ft of the property. My uncle thought he gave it to my mother, but she said he didnt. My grandpa thought he saw it at his house, but obviously its stuck between a book or something or slipped under a cabinet or something??

I thought $500 was reasonable, because I think it would be worth that in parts. Someone offered $200 just for the clock on the dash. I am not sure what all else is usable.

I am not sure how big of a hassle a no-title is... as mentioned, some states dont even issue them on cars that old. I am wondering, what if there was a mint 1959 Electra in Alabama (dont issue titles on pre 75 cars (maybe even 1985)... is that car worthless in a state that requires titles?

you can either use them yourself to help it sell, or suggest potential buyers do the same:

    http://www.broadwaytitle.com/lost-automobile-titles.htm

    but its $149

is this title not in your Uncle's name? Your grandpa's name?
Why can't one of them go down to your local motor vehicle office and request a replacement for a lost title?

And yes.. The pain in the ass the NYS DMV is.. I would not even attempt to try to register an Alabama '59 Electra here. They most likely would not do it. Or they would issue a salvage/junk title instead.

let me tell you a little story about a title i DID have.
My uncle gave me a 1986 Nissan 300ZX that he owned in California. I paid and had it transported to New York.
This Z was a Salvage-vehicle with California title.
    I had the title.

I went to the DMV to register this car and guess what? New York does not "honor" a California Salvage Title.
I had to apply for a New York Salvage Title. I had to pay $205 for an examination to ensure the car was safe and no parts on the vehicle were stolen. This examination would not be done for 2 months. (They only do them so-often). So for 2 months I had a car which, if it wasn't my uncle's, would have been completely useless to me. Of course I just kept the California plates on it and he kept it registered and insured in his name in California so I could drive it, until this was all done and over with. NEVER AGAIN tho.

I was lucky it had belonged to my uncle. if it did not, like I said, it would have sat around for 2 months.
Now.. if it had NO TITLE? I don't even want to imagine that.

When I bought my Wildcat in Ohio.. and tried to register it in New York.. this was fun. Ohio Titles do not have the "unladen weight" of the vehicle listed. Since NY taxes you depending on what the car weighs, well..... I would have most likely had to wait to get it weighed. However, I was lucky. This is how I know there are 4 4-door 64 Wildcats in New York. The lady at the DMV was kind enough (they won't always do it) to look up other cars of the same year and model. If they have any on file they'll just use the weight of those. However........ this was up in the middle of nowhere in New York, Columbia County. Where they have 1 person at the DMV and the pistol-permit office is the next window. Had I tried this in one of the NYC DMV offices,.. YAH RIGHT. I'd be towing it someplace to be weighed in,.

Will they take a car with no title at the wrecking yard? I know in Washington you would have to cut the car up to even get rid of it to the wrecking yard without a title.

Not sure, guess we will cut it up.

Well, thanks for all of the replies. I took some better photos and will post them on the local ads to see what happens... I actually waxed up some of the panels to show how nice they were if someone wanted this as a parts car. One guy said if he can sell his Jeep, he would buy it, but its still here. I guess if not sold soon, we may have to strip it and crush up the rest.

Thanks for all of the replies.
