This reminds me of a magazine article I read recently in either hot rod or car craft where they were interviewing Don Garlits and he has bad hearing from the top fuel cars over the years.
lots of options out there for hearing impaired folks now. doesn't matter if your moderately hearing impaired or profoundly hearing impaired.
I'm 35 and have measured hearing loss. It's not too bad (yet), can't hear some higher frequencies I should be able to and have a lower level case of tinnitus, but nothing debilitating or requiring hearing aids (again, yet). I often (somewhat jokingly) equate mine to the 3 R's: Race tracks, Rock concerts, and shooting Ranges (though in reality I could point out some other likely factors as well). My only hope is they develop a "Lasik for ears" by the time it gets bad enough to intervene.
Im in the same shape as most of you guys 40 plus years in construction and loud music. I was measured 24 years ago and left ear had a much higher loss then right ear it was not so bad at that point but all these years later I know both have gotten worse. When I go out I always try and be where my right ear is by those talking. If its my left ear I cant hear much anymore. The female is always saying to me you didnt hear me did you? and then what did I say to you. I can guess pretty good sometimes lol. Also in noisy places Im told use your inside voice as when the rooms loud I have no idea my voice volume. Id defiantly protect my hearing better if I could go back 40 years.
Hearing loss is the only disability people gets pissed off at you for having. For me, it was fixing dynamometers for 11 years. Sounded like a 747 taking off when the car was doing 55 in a shop. Stupid me never wore hearing protection so Im a little deaf in my left ear because the drivers side window was down while I was in the car. Any background noise and I cant hear the person Im talking to.
I have it too. Apparently it’s much worse when I’m being assigned chores around the place since I don’t seem to remember ever hearing those “requests”.
AS u age, your hearing diminishes, loud sounds over long periods of time hasten the loss. I am the oldest of 4 siblings, and I have the best hearing. I have my ears cleaned by an otolaryngologist every 8 months. I also place about 3 drops of baby oil in each ear weekly. I have tinnitus in my left ear- wooshing but no ringing. As a child I had a mastoidectomy in that ear. My wife should have her hearing tested but she will not. I bet most husbands suffer from selective hearing!
No, my Phonak can’t be adjusted by me. The hearing doctor sees them up remotely on a computer. They are tailored to my exact hearing loss.
I think most of us have the exact same factors you listed. I have the added risk of loud work places. Some are worse than others. I am on a loud one now. High pressure. High pressure water removal of paint. About three more weeks of that. The pressure can actually cut you in half.
...external vibration gets to your auditory system two ways; vibration creates low frequency sound waves, and through your body. For sound part, you need sound-cancelling hearing protection tuned to low frequency, for transferred vibration, a way to isolate body from vibrating surfaces...
