I put my convert back on Evilbay and already within a 1/2 of a day someone has already started bashing me about my car. I wrote that this car is worth $100 done. AM I WRONG!!?? (yes you will have an investment) but havent these cars sold recently for the triple didgits?? WOW I never thought I would say this but it sucks to sell cars.

Anyone heard of this guy?? He obviously has the buick world cornered and has never been here to this board

    Mike,
You should know from experience that there will always be someone that is going to be the "negative tirekicker". Even if you would have said it was worth 5K done he would have had a comment.
Consider the response as one from the unknowing and shake it off.
Hopefully you will be more successful with more knowing evilbayers.

You asked so , I do not think our GS converts that are not Stage 1 cars will bring the price stated . Just 4 months ago a california rust free GS 455 convert , all original went for just over 10K it needed restore but it was all there running and rust free . For some reason or cars are lagging behind in the muscle car market . The fact that we do not get the coverage in the magazines , the lack of repro parts , small production numbers and also the image of granpas car . The GSX is hot in the market and it seems to have something to do with the look , you know hot color and graphics . Just my .02 but good luck selling her .

    Mike,
I have been following GS and Skylarks on Ebay for 2 years now. I don't think I have ever seen one do well. Ebay is great to sell parts but not cars. I don't know what it is about the forum but the cars just don't command top dollar.

If I were you, I would stick to the car and describe it accurately. To me, what other cars are selling for at the current time or in the past is irrelevant. If I was looking on Ebay then I would be looking to buy one to restore/own. If I was looking to make a quick buck than I would do some research and bid accordingly.

$100,000 seems a little high in my opinion, but like evry other used car, it's stricly up to how bad someone wants something. Other than the bogus ebay auction on the "1 of 1" 70 GS convertible Stage 1 manual 3 speed, I have not heard of any GS or GSX selling for that much. Good luck with the auction.

PS - If that is a 70 455 fan shroud I saw in the trunk, I will buy that from you!!

That car was on this board not to long ago, I think someone was trying to sell in on here or they had just bought it....

No I have had this car in storage for several years. And my whole thought in the way I wrote my ad was that these cars are not getting cheaper. The car finished if someone went out and spent $60K on a real frame off restoration , would be worth ALOT of money. it seems everyone wants to nitpic over a selected figure. I just need to part it out and show that a car of that caliber is worth as much in parts as it is in complete form.

You presented the number of $100K value, and he called you on it.

Would a restored car really pull that much value? It really does seem like a stretch. If you can prove a car like that would be worth $100K, then you should prove it- otherwise that really stands out as a blatant false claim to try to articifically inflate the value of the car.

Even if you can prove it would have a $100k value, I still wouldn't include that in the auction because:
    - It is irrelevant for most buyers
    - An informed buyer will already know the potential value of the car.

Your claim is kinda like saying "if you buy this crumpled up piece of paper from my trash can, and plate it with $100K of gold, it will be worth $100K." It's only a crumpled up piece of paper, and it is borderline unethical to represent it as anything besides what it is.

    -Bob Cunningham

EDIT: p.s. I am not implying that your car is like a crumpled up piece of paper, it looks like a decent car. I am just making an example.

if a hemi e body is worth $ 2m, ( apparently it is, because thats what someone recently paid for one ) then a restored 4667 would be a great buy at the low sum of just $100k.

a better car, for 5% of the price of a hemi car ? sounds good to me.

sorry, i cant use my caps lock button.

    oh yeah, what phil said.

Does anyone happen to know the sales price of the most expensive GS ever sold? I'm sure someone on this board would have some idea of the most expensive car or cars sold in recent history. Let's just see if any have reached that amount, and that should answer Mike's original question.

Can someone start it off by giving a description of the car, and what it sold for (sorry, all the cars I'm aware of are in the $30K range)?

The documented 72 frame off 4 speed convert , stage 1 done by Kleiner sold in the last 6 months for 50-55K. The guy that bought it has apparently had no takers at 90K.

I would use that car as a reference point even though I feel he got a good deal.

From having some 70 converts. I think it is a car you could easily sink 50K into if someone else does the work on top on the purchase price. At todays prices it would then resale for between 35-60K depending on a lot of things, includind whether you hit the right buyer at the right time, options color, quality of the job. etc.

Your best buyer is a person who enjoys a project and can do the work himself. Even though that person will get little or nothing for his labor he may still get his out of pocket expeses back at a resale.

With the upward spiral of prices of some cars, hemis , boss 429 mustangs etc., Buicks may be drawn up in price. Gesslar's continued success against other major muscle cars will help accelerate Buicks toward parody.

Aside from the ???? ebay 3 speed conert. I have never heard of any GS hitting 6 figures or even close to it. Some say at private sales they may. Assuming that info is correct it seems isolated.

    My Apologies!! Mr Racebuicks!

    Michael;

Let me start by apologizing to you and the other guys who love Buicks as much as I do. I hopped on Ebay and saw the car and shot my mouth off without considering that this could be a fellow Buick Lover. I could see the other bumper in the first picture and should've realised. Even if you were not a fellow Buick lover on this board, it was wrong. I simply felt strongly that the car (as nice as it is and could be) would never fetch that kinda cash. Hell I can't even type! I hope you'll accept my apology and if I ever see you in person I'll shake your hand and say sorry.

Regardless of weather or not its worth 100K when done, I would just email him back and say " I stand corrected, there is such a thing as a dumb question."

For starters thanks for showing up. I usually dont make a big deal out of things from ebay unless its a non paying bidder but your email made me think alittle so I wanted to know what others thought. I was talking to Dave Kleiner and he told me of a couple cars that had sold for very high prices , and as everything the price should reflect the car. I have a car for sale that I have gotten rediculas offers to part out for pennies on the dollar and sell the car for $2000 etc etc. I guess I wish these GS's in general were worth the same as the chevelle counter parts. Opology accepted and anyway I too will offer my opology for being rude back to you and maybe we will meet someday and drink a MT Dew over this.

I too have said that these cars don't bring the price stated , but you did ask . I , being a proud owner of 6 Buicks including a parts car know the facts we deal with every day . Our cars are superior to most other muscle cars on the market ! Just look at the facts proved by guys like Mike Garrison and Greg Gessler . The BBB is a good platform for an awsome street brute . It is also a fact that when you look over at the Bowties and Hemis , they get a huge bump from the non original race motors . Every race fan knows Hemi power the top fuel cars to sub 5 second times . In Hot Rods Fastest Street Machine contest there were really only Hemis and monster inch Chevys . Even Ford has aftermarket blocks for their 460 and Boss 429 . Our street credibility is known to a few that own or been beaten by a BBB . That said due to the low pruduction numbers and real limited numbers of serious race parts we are limited . When or if a big inch BBB block comes available and people get the coverage on TV and magazines we willl see some of the value adding that this brings to the market . Just a couple of weeks ago saw Tom Rix in a final on TV . He lost but ran very well . Just remember that Mike , Greg , Tom , Jim and anyone else out there that are upholding our marque , We say thank you . Mike I hope you get more than you are asking for your car ! I too think we have extremely undervalued cars right now compared to Hemi cars and LS6 Chevelles . There is a downside to all this as most of us here on the board know how hard it is to sell a very nice car , even on this board we are used to buying cars at bargain prices . Look at the 1970 Stage 1 that just sold on here with NOM for 2500 . Anyone see a BB Chevelle or Mopar for that price anywhere lately ?
I too now see my addiction as untreatable and must now go out to the garage and turn a wrench or two on a Buick .

I think a 100K is a stretch... so its a GS convertible. That makes it a cool car. But, It is lacking options. If I spend thast kind of cash, I think I speak for alot of people here too, I want buckets, a console, guages, a tach, PW, PL, AC. Just to name a few. The biggies for me would be the buckets and console. its a stripper convertible. Its a cool car. I think it lacks the more desirable options, which will hinder it's abilty to pull a big price tag.

And to Ed, it shows you are not a coward when you signed your name.

I would not have bothered to put a figure of any kind in there as to what it could be worth restored. It's not based on any lasting past performance in the market and it's mostly an opinion. It has no place (in my opinion) on the auction. Let the guy who's going to buy it sort that out. The market you are targeting is a more educated market that's been around the block and no sales pitch is going to make a huge difference. Just state the facts without over embellishing and the auction will take care of itself.

This is all my opinion only.

  20. gs4u2c

    gs4u2c Is that a 442?

Agreed, opinions vary from person to person. I don't know what your car would be worth, but based on history (and recent activity) I couldn't see it bringing more than $55K if it had a full ground up resto done to it. Do I feel that's just...no, but that seems to be what's going on. The two words STAGE ONE tend to do crazy things to value as they seem to be the only cars even approaching $100K (and certainly surpassing it). If I could I would buy every GS455 convert that I could, because in my opinion people will eventually realize that Stage 1 converts are too rare and aren't that much quicker in street trim.
