A Spal switch or sensor is your best bet www.spalusa.com the switch comes on at 195 degrees and off at 175 degrees ... goes in the intake manifold .. there should be a port to screw into

I'm almost to the point of buying my coolong system components. 71 GS 455, all the standard bolt ons. Currently have 3.08 gears. The pain is I live in AZ where the summer heat is above 100 degrees all summer.

I was going with an aluminum radiator. I've been told 2 electric fans will not keep the car cool in traffic? So can you get the fan brackets to mount fans on the front as pushers to work in conjuction with a clutch fan?

You should be able to fab some brackets using cheap aluminum bar stock (1/2" wide or so) you can pick up at Lowe's if you can't find anything pre-fabbed. Easy enough to bend and drill...and it won't cost you much if you have to make a couple trial runs.

I dont know where that info came from maybe a guy who didnt have enough fan or rad to keep cool .
the Spal twin 11 inch fan set up does a great job .
here ... check out the post in a sister site .. use this link

BeCool with 295 Flex and a bottle of Wetter then Water

I resolved my running HOT problems on my
    400 ci ( 277.5 RWHP ) mill.

The issue was that the controls that came
with the Flex A lite fans with made in
central china and were not very ( did not work )
    well made.

We decided to set up a manual switch under the dash.

After engine warm up ( around 165 F ), I flip the switch
and she stay nice and cool at whatever speed the car runs.

I have had the car well over 100 MPH for stretches of
highway driving ( full tank emptied in 45 mins...you
guys do the math ) and the car stayed rock steady
    at 185 F ) with an outdoor temp of 72 F 40 RH.

Afterwards I have about two miles of city driving to get the
car home and she slowly goes back to 165 F.

    I love my Buick

Running cool is alway nice but how cool is too cool.
180 is the minimum temp to burn off moisture and sludge build up in the oil pan and crank case... not to mention pre mature wear on cylinder walls and rings
just a friendly word of advice .
Sounds like the cooling system is efficient enough to do its job .. so a 180 or 185 thermostat would be in line ... and you should be able to modulate there .
maybe 195 in traffic on a bad day .. but then again you have the e/fan to keep temps where you need it .

Ken, did you get the one for the 68-71 Skylark, Auto trans? I think it's the second pic down? The one you show that you got has the slanted filler opening but the one on the website for your car (70?) shows the top fill not the slant fill. Which actual one did you get? I have a 69 and I think I would use the same as yours.

I also bought this very nice alum. radiator from Don a few weeks back
    for my 1970 GSX Stage 1 auto / 3.08/ bored 40 over/ currently running
the stock 3 core rebuilt copper radiator. I should have it in by this weekend
to let you all know my findings.
Currently the stock 3 core @ 60 to 65 outside temp @ 60-65 mph/ 2300 rpm runs 202 degrees...up the speed to 70 and the temp goes up to about 210.
I drove the car to work yesterday to do another test with the stock system
but at a outside temp of 80 degrees...my findings were with stock 3 core
@ 60 mph 2300 rpm the car runs at 210 water temp. with the stock gauge
at one notch above 1/2 way. If I up the speed to 65 to 70, water temp goes
up to about 212 to 215. Too warm for my likes. I use a 180 degree stat.
I should have the Alumi-tech unit in by this Saturday and am anticipating
much cooler water temp's. The tubes in the 2 core Alumi-tech are huge
next to the ones in the 3 core stock unit. I hope my $500.00 is well spent.
The alumitech unit is a beautiful unit and looks about as close to stock as
you could get. Don seems to know his stuff! I am painting the end tanks
and the fins with Eastwood's radiator paint to go with the stock look. I painted one side last night and used up about 2/3rd's of a can so I'm glad
I bought 2 cans. I wonder if this paint is just some sort of regular krylon
or rustolium with a new label stateing it's "Radiator Paint". One can sells
for about 13.00 dollars/ ouch!. But don't want to take a chance of goofing
    up my investment.
    Stay tuned for results! :3gears:

Wow, year old thread back up top... cool!

Anyway, Don did not offer the slant inlet version when I bought mine. Give him a call at Alumitech get his recommendation. I've been happy with mine for a year now.

    regards

I haven't tried this radiator, yet;as I am still building my car. It does fit in the coresupport, but the top will need some work.I haven't completed the installation yet. Look into "Flex-a-fit" alum radiators #56210. It's for a diesel, has 2 cooling fans(up to 6000 cfm),a/c switch, control panel, places to bolt condensers, trans coolers, etc. I am going to use it on my AM&P 523" engine with a/c.I paid $714 plus tax for rad/fan/controler combination. Just something else to check into,as it could be use in several applications.Their webite is :www.flex-a-lite.com or call 800-851-1510. Mike Nussell

I got the Alumatech installed yesterday in my '70 GS455 4spd. Awesome piece. It bolted right in but had to work the saddles as I was going from three core to the Alumatech. Kind of warm here yesterday but it maintained 185-190. I still can't get over how it was packaged again nice piece.

I installed my Alumitech in my 70 GSX Stage 1 bored 40 over this last Saturday.
Took it out on the freeway for a 40 mile jaunt last night after work.
At 76 degrees outside temp. the car now runs @195 degrees from
55mph to 80mph. I was running at 210 degrees on the freeway before at
    this outside temp.
So this is a improvement that is much welcomed.
So it appears as though, in my case it has dropped my water temp.
by 15 degrees from the stock 3 core.
For some reason when I got 20 miles out at a rest stop I thought I would
just sit at an idle for about 5 to 10 minutes to see what the water temp.
would do at an idle. It creeped up to 210 sitting there, then when I took
off again on the freeway it dropped back down to 195. With the old 3 core
it idled at about 195. When I got back home last evening & I noticed that I
forgot to fill up the overflow tank so maybe thats why the temp went up at the rest stop to 210. The fan is working properly as far as I can see. Now
that I have filled up the overflow tank I need to take it out again and see
if that licks the idle temp being at 210 or maybe that really is ok for it to climb
    just sitting at an idle?
Also had to grind out the stock rubber spacers a bit to fit the larger
end tanks. Other than that, it fits like a glove and looks about as stock
as I could hope for (painted black) The radiator cap fits really tight and I have to use a pair of jaw pliers to get it on all the way properly.
Next I am going to check out the timing with a dial back timing light if
I can figure out Larry's timing instructions posted on here, or I'll just get
    PDXMike to do it.

    All dialed in now...
She runs at 195 or less, freeway or in town.
Ran it all this week on vacation at 85-90 degree outside temp.
and never ran above 195 degrees water temp.
This alumitech radiator is the cat's meeeeow, so far.
I painted it black with Eastwoods Radiator Paint. You
    will need two cans.
