James The one i got for $50 is the one that needs the sleeve. I got that one awhile back. I was just using that as a compartive. But by the time I have the machine work done and have it sleeved I can probably buy the one thats done for cheaper.
Don't know how many of you know about this, but it's a compilation of craigslist and eBay listings. This is the link after I typed "nailhead" in the search window. As always, you have to know at least as much, if not more, than the guy selling the stuff. For example, the 'all aluminum' nailhead the one guy thinks he has. http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/sd.cgi?cat=pts&fil=nailhead&state= I went to look at a '67 Riviera advertised for $250 because the engine didn't run. The seller said he bought an engine for it, but was mislead and told that it would work in the '67. He asked me if I wanted it for an add'l. $50. Sure, why not. It was a complete, carb to pan, fan to flexplate, 425 nh from a '66 Riv. I put it in an old '48 F1 pickup and it ran just fine. Not bad for $50. (I had a BT code ST400 from a '66 Wildcat that I'd purchased with a bunch of other nh parts earlier.) Sold it running and never opened up the engine. Parted out the '67 for twice what I paid for it. For once in my life, I actually came out ahead $$$ on one of my ventures.
Yep, there are two things that most of these guys "know" about every Buick listed. 1) It's a nailhead 2) It's a GS Good luck with that '62 aluminum nailhead huh?? I wasn't aware that I that so many of the land rovers I've had over the years had an engine based on the nailhead!
Any engine block that needs a sleeve is worth the current price of scrap metal....I have sleeved several engines and never had any problems with them ... it is a good repair if done right... the engine will run forever.... but dont give any more than scrap metal price for a block like that.....
For $50 bucks i figured i couldnt go wrong. If i do decide to have this one fixed ill just have Russ build it for me.
