http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/2106374415.html I know a good 401 is becoming harder to find but dam. I could see if it was lx code 65 dual quad complete.
Yeah,,, some people got the idea that just because some thing is old, or belongs to them it is made out of gold.... we got a local bone yard like that.... the owner wanted a arm and a leg for anything and finally died with a yard full of vintage cars... his kids sold the stuff for scrap metal price.... I went over there but he only had 1 buick.....and it wernt my kind....
Doc I went and saw the guy. he also has some short block 401s and 425. I was possibly interesed in those what do you think is a fair price. On that complete motor the most i would offer is $500. Dan
Thanks Phil I looked at the motor and it aint worth my time to strip it and rebuild it. This guys has a whole bunch of parts and is tryo to build a 425. I referred him to Russ Martin so he could get a little education about what he has and what REALISTIC prices are.
Well,,,, west coast prices aint realistic to start with.... I have 3 nailheads and transmissions... core stuff that I have priced at $500 for both together....
I got $2,850 for this one earlier this year. It was a 4bbl. code 425 but had the dual quads on it. Engine, trans, everything in the pictures, even the big chrome air cleaner went with it, and it ran great.
I bought my '66 425 with no transmission as a rebuildable core for $300. Considering what it ended up costing me, that's about right for what I got. The only usable major parts were the block, heads, crank, rods, and timing case. The quadrajet intake and the exhaust manifolds were OK, but I did not use them. Obviously, a better engine is worth more gold. I would want to be very sure that the engine I was buying was really good though - as much as I love the Nailhead, it is an expensive engine to rebuild.
Dan , i got a friend in Texas that owns a auto machine shop,,, he races Pontiac engines.... He strips every one of the heads and blocks that he uses and then sets them out side in the weather and lets them age for 1 year... then he does all the machine work.... he says that it makes them much tougher.....:Brow: he says that there is a big difference in the way a aged head or block machines from a new one.....:idea2:
The same goes to brake rotors,if you make em from fresh cast iron they are goin to warp very fast.I know that good rotors here in Europe are made from as old as 20 years seasoned iron.Althought i doubt that seasoning old iron wich was heated and cooled gazilion times will make any difference...
DANG!!! People have to stop acting like california is the west coast!!! It's just the South end of it! Lots of people, two state's worth not even counting Alaska on the West side! We don't have as much of the clean rust free sheet metal as they do in the south though. As for the price of that engine, keep your eyes open and you should be able to find a running car cheaper!
Hmmmm, as far as that goes the East coast prices aint any better.... when you live in the middle and the average wage is $8 , a lot of stuff is made of unobtanium that is being sold on the east and west coasts.....:Brow:
I know i got a deal but i got a mostly complete 401 and th400 for $50. Now the guy didnt really know what it was and he just wanted it gone.
John The tranny is good needs a full rebuild. Have to send it to Jim to get his opinion. Block I might use needs one cylinder sleeved. Heads need a good cleaning and rebuild. the only thing that was junk were the valve covers and all the pistons broke coming out. Since it is a 63 motor i might use a 64 and up crank.
