Hi! I usually post on the Pure Stock section of the board but know I have a question I know you guys can answer. I know where there is sitting a '72 GS Stage 1 4spd. I had approached the owner a little over 2 years ago about selling it to which he said "yes":TU: Well the deal fell through as 2 weeks later my wife and I bought a 30 acre farm next to where I grew up (plus being 900ft from work). Today the owners son stopped in to get some snow plow parts and I asked him what his dad was gonna do with the car. He told me that his moms' back problems are worsening, that his dad basically has no time to work on the car and I could probably still buy it. What I would like to know is what is it worth? Let me do my best at giving you a good description: BASKET CASE :Dou: While the car had come from sunny Florida it must of been a coastal car. The hood - rusted. The firewall - rusted to 3-4 inches of the cowl. Frame - scaley. Air cleaner - rusted completely out. Water got in the motor. The 455 that is in it is froze. The original trans is still in it. The original 455 block is with the car. Everything that had been on the original block is on the other engine. Consolette is in the trunk. Original wheels are present. Thanks in advance, Lon

You are correct on it being a coastal car. We call them beach cars here. I am about 1 mile from the beach and what a difference it makes. Those cars can be worse than snow belt cars. From your description, sounds like it can be saved but you will another clean Skylark to harvest all the parts needed for a resto. Sheeeesh, without knowing all the options, I can only guess $1000-2000.

Maybe $1000. If it were a '70, that would be a little more firm. But Tom Miller's super nice (restored?) 72 Stage barely brought 17k last year. Seems that the '72 market ain't real strong right now. But, if you can get it for the right price, SAVE IT! :TU:

Wow, I would have thought much higher since its a Stage 1, 4 speed car. I thought there were only something like 100 of them made in 72.

I imagine marketed right, it could probably bring 2500 with a little cleanup and good presentation (nice pictures on ebay or something). But it sounds like a full-resto car, and that is a quick 50k. Worth it for a rare car, but you'd never get close to that money out of a '72. I'd like to say: do it for the love of the car, but not everyone is made of money. If it is for the love of the car, might as well give whatever it takes to buy it. I think 1000-2000 would be reasonable, depending on options/color combo/and detailed condition.

Yeah it would for sure be a car that you would want to buy and keep ahold of. The 72's dont get as much respect as the 70 or 71 GS's but they are the more limited production of the three. Definitly more limited when it comes to the GSX and Stage cars but not as desirable. Some day that will change, hopefully. I guess its all in what you like.

I say around 1000-2000 is ballbark. If the car has the original driveline that is a big plus every thing else can be replaced with a donor car!:TU:

Just let me know I will check it out for you!!! I'm not to far.:Brow:

It sounds like it isn't as "nice" (if you can use that word when talking about cars that most would consider a basket case or beyond saving) as the 70 Stage 1 4 speed car Scott M. bought for $1,500.

If I recall, his still had most of the original parts intact, all of the paperwork and low miles.

Of course, everyone agreed that he get a good deal on that car, and I will be forever grateful that he bought it!!!

thanks for the replies so far

I could of picked it up for what I thought to be fairly reasonable and get a parts car that I know is sitting and be into it for under $1500.00.

Any chance for some pictures? Cars in Barns/Fields/Garages/warehouses are the coolest !!!!

    stupid me.....

when I stopped to inquire I didn't have my camera:Dou: I should have gotten pics while it was sitting in the front yard, under pine trees:jd: not more 20 feet from the road. At least in the past year he moved it into a garage. The original block has been sitting out in the weather. Bores looked like they would clean up easy enough but the reason it is out is the same reason that the other engine is froze - water ran in the air intakes in the hood:Dou:. I could only hope that the block isn't cracked.

Thought I would ask! Couldn't hurt..........

Good luck with the car hope you get it, and post us some pics.
I like to see these cars even if they are in less than perfect shape.

    Lon,

The difference here is I think this guy know what he has. I bought a rust free '72 GS 350 4 speed minus the motor for $3500. I started at $2800. I'd start out at $1000-$1500 and see what he says. I would hope you could get it for under way under $3000 if he has everything to go with it. If it's any help, in '72 there were 84 GS 455 4 speeds and 101 GS Stage 1 4 speeds. It's worth good money no matter how you look at it.

    Lon,
Is he the original owner? Does he have any documents for the car? Does he know any history about the car?:Do No:

What all this down talk on the 72 model year. I guess it easy to do if you have a trailer queen 70 stage 1 car. I still enjoy my 72 Stage 1 4-Speed and gets tons of respect from the blue oval and bow tie guys. I had a 70 GS and the one I have now is pretty close. AL.

Ok, I have to ask. Al, what year are your headlight bezels? They look like 1971 versions. 72 has charcoal color surrounding the headlight bezels. Did someone chrome yours?

Hi George, the paint was removed off the 72 bezels. I bought a N.O.S. set and have not installed them yet. I like the chome look and thought about having the ones on the car rechromed, AL.

    rh455,
The agreement we had settled upon was for under $1200.00 :Brow: back two years ago when I first looked at it. I'm hoping to be able to pick up another local '71-2 Skylark for around $300.00 :Do No: as it too has been sitting for quite some time. If this happens then I will be into them both for $1500.00 less tax & title.:TU:
