It seems as though the previous owner of my car wanted the underside of the hood painted body color. I am wondering if this is correct or not. If it is, then I'll take the time to clean it. If not, then here comes the black spray bomb!!! It is such a nightmare to keep clean. I like the way it looks, but I just spent an hour on it...and I only got the front 1/3rd of the underside clean. I'd really like to just unbolt the thing and take some soap and water to it.:blast:
Body color underside the hood is standard. Albeit rather faded, my underhood paint is original. I will probably put a fresh coat. The black is probably easier to maintain (and white would probably be the hardest). Of the ones I've seen done, I think the semi-gloss looks the best. Some have used flat and felt they should have used semi-gloss. The black does give it more of a muscle-car look, but I personally prefer the body color. By the way, the ralley rims with the white walls is a great choice.
Adam: I've owned a 66 LeSabre, a 69 Wildcat, a 72 LeSabre and my current 70 LeSabre. Never had a 71 big car, but all of my others were/are black on the underside of the hood. -Paul
I'm pretty sure mine is black, and always has been. I'll double-check tonight and let you know if it's green instead.
The underside of the hoods on both the '72 LeSabre, and '72 Electra I owned were black. Having given it some thought, all the GMs I have owned were painted black on the underside of the hood.
Adam, My '72 never been painted all original Centurion is black. It may have some body color overspray on it, but the original color was black, kind of like a primer of sorts. Think of the color on a NOS fender right out of the GM box. They come with a very thin coat of black semi-gloss primer. I am sure GM did not take the time to paint the underside of the hood body color, unlike the deck lid. All original cars I have ever seen are black semi-gloss primer type of paint.
Alrighty...so black is correct. Yes, Brad I know of the lovely black semi-gloss primer that is on new fenders. I sure wish I could just unbolt this hood and get it cleaned up and painted. What do you guys think I should do? Keep it white, or paint it semi-black??o No:
Adam: My vote is for black. It sure looks nice when it's all clean and painted and you get some mirror images of any chrome you have in the engine compartment. -Paul
Yeah, the whole car flat black, but with a paint roller. Actually maybe just the underside of the hood. I don't remember what semi-gloss black looks like, but I've used plenty of wrought iron black that looks pretty close to chassis black. I know the judgement has already been made, but all my Buicks had black hood undersides, as well.
Adam, I know that it's supposed to be the flat back of the chassis, but the previous owner of my yacht swapped the hoods, and mine is grey primer. It just depends on what you're looking for? Concours or a driver? If there's no rust...leave it be. I'd love to repaint mine, because someone alreday pointed out that it shoud be black. I don't have the place to pull my hood off, either.
Under Hood Color Under hood color of me '73 LeSabre is black. I am the second owner so I am sure of this.
The best results I've had for underhood black is a coat or two of rustoleum high temp black followed by heavy single coat of Krylon high temp semigloss black. Looks identical to factory I swear if you lay it down evenly, becareful though with radii it likes to run. I found that out when I painted my coresupport and inter fenders on my 70.
I like it! Don't forget STEALTH technology. Go with the low radio freqency signature of the flat black. The cops will never see you coming. Rick
I've got two 64 Skylarks. A white U.S. manufactured Skylark, with black under the hood and a Blue Canadian manufactured Skylark with blue under the hood.
