Dan, you described my grille perfectly. It has the stainless steel trim surrounds and the Skylark and tri-shield emblems. Looks like you know your stuff; can you please look at my post in "The Hides", maybe you can help me? Thanks

It was definately NON-POSI whatever it was. Interesting info on the 6.2% high comp 350 customs. I'd sure like to have one.

Andy- I have a hunch my Skylark Custom convert MAY be in that 6.2%.... the muffler and tailpipe hangers match on both sides and appear original and OLD....They should have been replaced when the system last was....

trouble is the car is not numbers matching and I have enough projects with other cars to drop the tank and look for the 'Flint build sheet' to have decoded.... hopefully its there so someday I can find out......

Dan that sure would be cool if it was a hi comp 350. Do you have the protect-o-plate?? The options are on it. Dropping the tank is too easy man unless the bolts are rusty.
I'd love to see a scan of your build sheet. I guess mine was above the tank. I've looked in all the places but no luck. I had a moron body shop guy that dropped my tank for the first time and if it was there I'm sure he tossed it. He broke as much stuff as he fixed rust. He broke the fuel gauge sender for one thing. He did stuff I asked him specifically NOT to do. The fun part was paying him to do what I asked him not to do!!

Andy, which plant was your car built in??? (letter in the VIN?) the non-flint build sheets are much easier for the layperson to decode, too bad your bodyshop guy was so unreliable... I don't have any paperwork with my convert, only came with the title... I've dropped three tanks on my other cars, found build sheets every time-- it helped wire-wheeling the bolt threads, soaking them w/ PB blaster and then using an impact tool to wind them down--- I just don't want to mess with the tank on a good running 'driver' right now, too many other projects around the house and with my other cars... I'll let the suspense build some more first..........

my car was built in flint 12/69 and sold in toledo ohio 4/22/70. I still have the dealer trunk emblem (bob eddy buick, toledo, oh) but it's pitted. I think I'll get it rechromed and put it back on the car someday. Thats something I haven't seen much on old cars.

Interesting... If you get a good look at the plate, the sales code for the 'high performance group' is A8. The internal code is Y42. A7/L77 would be the 285 horse 350, btw.

    False alarm

well guys looks like the ebay car above was a false alarm on the high comp custom search, unless there was a mistake on the protect-o-plate. On the left side middle row is SO although the S is flawed. SO is the code for 350-2. SB is whats on mine and that's a 350-4. SP is the hi comp 350-4. Oh well. I don't have any room in my garage anyway. Also JH is TH350. On the right side, LL is 2.73 open rear, 6 is AM/FM radio 8 is power steering. It is an original silver car. I haven't seen may silver customs before.

You mentioned earlier about your build sheet probably getting tossed by your body man.... The Flint sheets are smaller and look insignificant to the casual observer.... easy to see why some might discard them (not us)

That P-O-P is tough to see-- I've never been fortunate enough to have one. The codes they used on there are not the ones I expected to see. You learn something every time ya log on here!!!!!!

yeah Dan it is nice to learn these things. For years I was guessing what my rear gear ratio was. I was crawling under the car with wire brushes lookin for codes stamped on the axle tubes and gettin sand and crud in my hair when my protect-o-plate was in the glove box the whole time....

That pic above is actually a stamp of the p-o-p that the guy emailed me. Here's What the p-o-p for that car looks like.

nice pics, thanks for sharing.... did you break it to the e-bay seller about his car being a 350-2 car??? Must've had a '350 High Compression' air cleaner sticker added along with ??? over time....

Speaking of P-O-Ps, does having it, as well as the build sheet and other original papers, on a numbers matching vehicle significantly add to the value of the car?

I thought about it but since he didn't say it was the original engine it could actually be a high comp 350-4 in there. I asked him if the engine was original to the car instead. He replied he didn't know. I just left it at that.

Does the p-o-p add to the value significantly. Heck, I'm no expert on the value of cars but I'd say it adds to the value but not significantly. I suppose that depends on your definition of significant.

I'd say that if it was car with percieved as well as actual value, like a musclecar, it prolly adds value.
If your're selling something like a 98 pick up truck, papers arent much good.
