I posted this in another thread, but wanted to get it out there for everyone.
Attached is a pic of the upper hoses that will fit the dual snorkle air cleaner for many of our cars.
The original hose replacement was a Gates 20574 (center hose) which is no longer available to my knowledge. What works is the 20980 (top hose), but it does not fit the hose hook.
The bottom hose is a Goodyear #107 that I recently got from the Autozone website (not available in stores) and it is a 100% match to the 20574. They had it listed for a 69-70 Electras.
I have heard of repro hoses going for $64 or so. AZ charged $6.99 plus shipping. :eek2:
You can do the math, but I think it is a bargain for the correct hose that fits the hook.
The Goodyear #033 is the same as the Gates 20980 and was less than $10 at the store, so no shipping.
We have to pay high prices for some of our parts, but this may be a chance to save a few and not get hosed..
    Sorry, I couldn't resist it.....
    Regards,
    Mark

So what is the difference between 70 and the 71-72? :Do No:

I've got a 70 SF 455 that I am putting in my 71 GS convertible and want it to look original. Any help or pics would be appreciated.

I don't have any pics of the 71 or 72 hoses. My old Gates book calls for 20689 for 71 GS455 and 20689 or 20869 for 72 GS455. Not sure if these are available.
Right now I have a 71/72 fan shroud in my 70 with the 20980 hose (top one in pic) that fits fine.
Since there is no hose hook on the 71-72 setup, the 20980 should work. There was a strap that held the hose on them though. I didn't use it on my 70 as I don't think it fit with the 20980 hose.
Perhaps someone else can answer your question better. I have attached a pic of the 20980 hose on my 70 to give you an idea of what it looks like in the car.
Not sure if this helps you,
    Mark

post 70 hose setup with strap

here is an example of a post 70 setup using the strap. The parts numbers on the hose are EO5C AG2 and GM AU 1386849XB.

Can someone tell me if all '70 GS's used a hook, or only AC equipped ones?

    Thanks!!

    Jim,

I posted the AZ ones as the price was very reasonable and they fit right.
When I saw in the other post that some were paying $64 for a hose I thought I would pass it along. It just seemed very outrageous. That may be ok for a concours car, but maybe a bit of a stretch for the rest.
Where'd you get those hoses? GM and for how much? Wasn't sure they were even still available.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I thought your info was well taken and very useful. Kleiner put the GM hose on the post 70 strap set up shown in the picture. I guess he may have a stash.

The hose in the hook picture came with the car, a 70 455 4 speed convt, and I do not know its origin.

We have yet another 70 with the hook set up at another location. I did buy and install that hose myself. After getting one that did not fit, I tried NAPA. It fits as well as the one in the picture. Like Dr Weise, I had to trim about an inch as I remember from the engine end. It has been more than a year since I made the purchase, but I would say it cost about $12.00. Naturally, the price is affected by the strength of the discount you may get off NAPA list.

Thanks again for the research you did. Incidently this has been a topic before. In that post others concluded the Gates number I posted was correct. Never tested one myself. At one time someone said they called Kleiner and he said Gates hoses fit the best. Search this Board under "Gates."

    Gang,

The 71 and 72 shrouds were different. The 71's had NO strap and since no strap, no hole in the top of the shroud. The 72's used the plastic strap shown in the photo and plastic push fastener to hold the hose. 71's were left to "flop in the breeze", as it were. Most, if not all, shrouds purchased after the 71 model year were of 72 design (with the hole in the shroud). I know, I had to find a proper 71 shroud for the Black GSX as the one purchased from Buick years ago was a 72 style shroud and had the hole. My bud, Doug Durkee, sold the correct shroud to me several years ago.

As far as Dave K having a stash of NOS GM hoses, well let's just put it this way...a little ink and the proper stamp go a long way.....

I may be wrong but it is my understanding that GM did not make hoses in 1970. All the hoses for Buicks were made by Goodyear and had the Goodyear stamp on them with the GM part number. Can anyone tell me if this is true
    Thanks

    Hi Mark,
That is some great hose info:TU: I have the Gates 20980 installed on my 70 GS. It fits in the hose hook with no problem. The only thing I notice is there is a curve in the hose right before it attaches to the radiator. Kleiners hose is straighter, which is probably more correct. Good info, I'm writing these #'s down.

I bought the AZ Goodyear 107 upper radiator hose yesterday for the GS455. Cost was extremely reasonable at $7.50 with tax. At a glance, it looks like it will work well. I'll post back later once I install it with the fitment results. Thanks again to Mark and board members for the sharing of the wealth of info!:TU:

Thanks for your investigation and contribution to the issue.

I probably will fly in for Reynolds event which is in your backyard. I take it that your local airport 9 miles south would be closer than your downtown airport. Also, it appears that Perry GA airport may be an option. There is a Butler airport at Reynolds but no fuel or cars. Too bad it is so close. How far a drive would it be from MCN airport versus Perry?

    Jim,

The Butler and Perry airport aren't commercial airports. I don't know if you're a pilot or not but thought I'd mention this. Neither of those would have rental cars either. The Macon airport is about 6 miles from my house ( due south of Macon) and is a commercial facility with rental cars, etc. Distance to Reynolds from that airport would be about 33 miles or so. If you fly in there, I could give you directions to Reynolds that would allow a shorter driving distance to Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds. If you want my number for any questions when you get in the area, let me know and I'll PM you. The downtown airport is called Herbert Smart and is 10 miles or so east of Macon and not convenient. That would allow a greater driving distance. If I didn't have a friend already staying with us (and racing at SDR) at the house, I'd offer up accomodations to you. He may regret it later since we have an 11 month baby girl who has a perfect, healthy set of lungs she likes to execise through the night several times! Let me know if I can answer any other questions. We'll throw out the southern hospitality for all out-of-state visitors. Look for me in one of my two Buicks there and say hello!

Yes, I am a pilot and will be flying myself and others. Thanks for your offer. We are just coming for the day if the weather holds. After a summer of record drought the Monsoons have arrived here. Could you PM your suggested driving direction?

OK... got the AZ Goodyear #107 hose on the car. It's not the fit I was hoping for with the hook and actually it doesn't ride where it needs to in relation to the distributor cap/wires nor sit perfectly in the hook. Only $7.50, so it was worth a shot! I wouldn't recommend it with the 70 455 shroud/ hook. I'm going to buy AZ Goodyear #33 next and will report back in. In addition, I will look hard for Gates hoses 20574 and 20980.

Jim Lore: on the hose you posted the pic of.... #022688: who is the hose manufacturer??
