67 GS 400 speed stuff?

    wheelz 'B' is for Buick.

I am trying to schmoooze a local guy into changing his now AUTOmATIC 67 GS 400, back to its original state of a 4 speed manual GS 400. He has the consolette and a few misc pieces but needs shifter, linkages, "Z" bar, pedals... (I have a bellH & M21 tranny)

IIRC. . . 66 & 67 are the same, RIGHT? will ANY later manual shift parts, say '68 up, work on this system?

    ANY HELP would be appreciated...

I will prolly also post this on the 'U shiftum' section.

    ThanX!

Wheelz, I am far from an expert but as I remember not much of the 66 and 67 are the same. maybe the pedals, and the shifter body. They both had the reverse lock out Muncie shifter, not bolted to the tans, but to the cross member and body. The 66 had a T10 and 67 had the Muncie, so the rods and arms are different. I am not sure if the Z bar and rod from the pedals to the Z are the same. Maybe someone else can answer this. I am thinking different because of the Nailhead. Most people in the old days took the stock shifter out and put an after market Hurst in place of the poor shifting Muncie shifter. I think they make an adaptor for the Hurst to use the Muncie reverse lockout shifter handle, not sure who makes it. That way you get the OEM look and a good shifter. Thanks Bill.

Billl..Im a bit funcused by the REVERSE LOCKOUT you mentioned... The 67 still had the ignition switch on the dash... and I beleive in 68?, GM moved this ignition switch to the column, thus utilizing the lockout/steering column system... WHAT did the 67 LOCKOUT DO, if indeed there was one???

    ANYbody?

Thanx for your input Mark... this may end up being more a challenge than I thought.... ..and YES, I could be interested in your pedal assembly and any other linkages you may have...

AND Rick.. I would like to see pix of your shifter to review with the fello, and to confirm it is correct, original eqpt. The guy remembers the car when new had a "lift up" shifter to get into reverse?? WOULD that be true??? :TU:

67 had a muncie round hadnle with the lift up stirups for your fingers...

Theres an adapter to put that handle on a hurst shifter, and thats exactly what i would do

66-7 GS handles are soooo hard to get...

THANX for your input Mark! If you come across that 'adapter' information, please send me the details.

The cross member was changed when the T400 auto tranny was installed... SO locatiing the correct cross member to make this all work out as original, makes me kinda want to sit back and REthink my offer.... :Dou:

However, after several months, I have him almost convinced to allow me to do this... ugh. gotta push on.

Here is a picture of the adaptor. I will look for who/where to get. Seems like some Ford site had it. As I remember they made 2, based on the handle. I should have bought one when I had the info but did not. That is the route I am going to take on my 67, use a aftermarket Hurst and this adaptor. I have the correct shifter but would need rebuild and then still problems shifting.

About the 66/7 round reverse lockout shifter handle. Maybe someone can confirm if any of the Chev one's are the same, because they repro them. Thanks Bill.

Unfortunately skylark is all by its self

if you use the adapter Bill is talking about, you can use a power glide crossmember

Mark... are you saying the 400 cross member in the car now, is different than the Pglide crossmember?

65-67 Impala handles are similar, but have a more rounded bend:

Here's a '66 GS shifter. It differs from '65 as it bolts to the trans crossmember. 65 bolted to the trans tailhousing:

The Hurst shifter handle adapters are sold be the Parts Place and others, about $39. Be sure the Hurst shifter body has a bolt-on handle, some used 1-piece sticks.
Crossmembers for 65-66 were the same for auto vs stick. I imagine 67 was the same.

yes its diff if its a GS, i have no idea whats diff, but i have 6 66 GS crossmembers (conv) and the 67 GS 400 turbo is a diff crossmember, and i dont know why, no one will tell me...but the 400 turbo and the 4 speed crossmembers are diff in a 67..Rick..finitebidder might know whats the diff or Will prob knows

I am just going by what people have told me no real experience...if the 67 400 cross is diff, dont burn it on a 4 speed conversion put the cheap cross member in there

Wheelz, did not find the adaptor at The Parts Place, but found it at 396.com for $23.95.

Walt, Is the shifter in the picture yours? I am looking to get the body of one redone, to get it to shift better. If you or anyone out there, have had one done please share info.

Mark, crossmember differences. 66 is a bolt in, 67 rubber mounted. 66, GS 4 speed, and GS auto same, bolt holes for shifter, 2 small holes outboard from trans mount holes, and no oval hole for E brake. Not sure if 66 conv the same. I need to look closer at my 67 ones, 4 speed has bolt holes for shifter, and oval hole for E brake cable. Need to look at GS hardtop to see if the same.

    Thanks Bill.

Bill, yes it's my shifter. I did disassemble it, replate the parts, and reassemble. It's necessary to cut through the welds on the housing to take it apart, and reweld when complete. At the time, I didn't investigate what would be necessary to improve it's performance.

Shifter handle adapter is sold by Parts Place on ebay, but personally, I would much rather buy from 396.com (aka Ground Up).

They used one of these in the Car Craft article about installing a new shifter in a 66 GS. I believe Auto Krafters makes them. You can find the whole article and pictures on line.

I have read that article, interesting, that they had to relocate the 4 speed shifter hump opening to allow the new Hurst shifter to work. I appears there is no correct mounting adaptor for the T10 today from Hurst. I am wondering if in the old days Hurst made one for the T 10 in the 66 Buick Skylark GS 4 speed. I just do not like having to move the hump opening. Thanks Bill.

They did make one back I the day. I might even have the old catalog. In the Car Craft article they adapted a Chevy Impala shifter to make it work.

Rick & Crash, THANQ for sharing!

Rick, nice shifter! I may have to consider buying it...that is, IF its for sale when I need it?

Crash, WOW NOS? The paperwork shown in the pix indicate 65~66 Hurst shifter... 67 is altogether different I am told...

So, I would STILL like to see a complete 1967 GS 400, 4 SPEED setup IN THE CAR, under the car, pedals, linkages, bellH, 'z' bar etc...

ANYBODY feel like venturing out into the cold deepfreeze and snap a few pix of the 67 GS 400 4 SPEED for me? PLEEEEEEEZE!?

..Its beginning to look a lot like ..um, maybe I shouldnt push this guy too hard to convert his car BACK to a 4 speed... :Dou:
