'66 Plymouth Fury -- Any good?

Before you go into cardiac arrest from reading the word 'Plymouth', hear me out. I've been looking for a replacement for the big orange beauty since I sold it (and I'm still beating myself up about that, worst decision I ever made). Sadly, everything even remotely close to the condition it was in is much MUCH too expensive for this poor college student. So, although Plymouth is generally anathema to me (and with good reason), when I found this Fury in what appeared to be decent condition for a reasonable price, I figured there was no harm in test-driving it.

To my shock and horror, I loved it!

Now, I like to think of myself as a reasonable person. Rather than immediately falling on my knees and begging the guy to let me take it for his rather low asking price, I figured it would be safer to make sure that the thing won't fall apart on me in less than a year. To that end, I would ask if anyone here has ever owned a '66 Fury, or any other older Plymouth, and what your experiences have been.

(Oh, and for those who remember my other thread, that Toronado turned out to be in much worse condition than I thought. Something of a shame, actually, it was one nice-looking car.)

ya better love it...cuz they arent fast movers...i wouldnt pay a lot either...there are less big mopar fans than big buick or pontiac fans..so if you buy it...unless its something so rare..your probably gonna have it for a while...

they have horrible structural rust problems too..no frame really check it out....

Thanks for the info, but speed and popularity have never been huge concerns for me. Heck, just look at my title. I will be sure to take a look at the frame, though.

We own a 1964 Sport Fury with the 426 cross ram. It Is quite a piece. But in the 65 model year the Fury went away from the 116" B body wheel base we have to a rather large C body. This body change really killed the performance aspect for these cars. The Satellite stayed small like the 64 and is the car you want.

Depends on the model, bodystyle, motor, and tranny - we need more info.

  6. i had a 66 fury 3 years ago. with the right wheels and tires and a slight rake in the stance they can be appealing. my car was a 318 and had power steering that was so easy that you could look at the wheel and it would turn. i'd own another but i wouldn't expect it to be fast or awe inspiring.

@GranSportSedan: your opinion was exactly what I was looking for, thank you. The car in question also has the 318 that is anything but speedy, though, again, that's not much of a concern for a daily driver. And I agree, the steering is magnificent.

The 318 is a dime a dozen. It's a big block too. At this point, the desirability of the car is dependent on the model and the bodystyle.

@442w30: Desirability? Who ever said anything about desirability? Endurability, Reliability, Affordability; these are what is important (to this poor college student without a car). Thanks anyway, though.

*EDIT* Oh, and for the record, it's a sedan and just a regular Fury. It ain't pretty, but the engine runs beautifully and, if it'll last for a couple years, then it's worth the purchase. That's what I'm trying to find out. Sorry if I sound snappish, but I'm a little tired of trying to explain that I have no need for speed or popularity or...well, much of anything so long as I like the looks and the criteria outlined above is met. And it needs roominess. At 6'5", I don't fit into much.

Again, sorry for sort of biting your head off there.

  10. the 66 318 is a bigblock? are you sure about that?

Someone had posed the comment, "ya better love it...cuz they arent fast movers," so I was adding to that. Not all Furys are created equal, and they are priced accordingly.

Telling me it's a sedan doesn't help, and neither does "just a regular Fury." You may like the car, but a little research into what it really is will help you get the most value for your dollar.

Very nice indeed, Sherwood, if I may say so myself. And thanks again, all, for the input. I think I'm going to go ahead and pick it up tomorrow.
