What is the correct radiator for the 65 GS 401 with Auto and A/C?
Is it a 3, or 4 row radiator? What is the correct P/N's for the upper and lower radiator hoses? Check out my post on the Bench part of this forum by Bill Bailey if you have time. Thanks in advance.

    Doug,
Thank you so much for all the information. I will be on the phone to our local GM dealer first thing in the AM. I will also see if my parts suppliers can cross reference these numbers. Wow The correct radiator P/N. I could only dream someone could actually find a radiator with that part number. Thanks again Doug, I will let you know what happens as soon as I can.

I called our GM dealer this morning, no luck. He said they do not find numbers anywhere. I also called my parts man and he says the upper hose number is the one they have been giving me that has the 1" 1/2 ID. It also does not look correct. He said the lower hose part number crosses to a flexible hose replacement. I am still in limbo. Thanks anyway Doug. I will get back to you when I know more.

Bill, I can't help you with the hose P/N's, but here is an idea. Go to a real auto parts store, the kind where they actually have the books. As in the books that list applications for older cars. You should be able to get a number from there and then with any luck it can be ordered in. If they have it in stock, go buy a lotto ticket because it's your lucky day.

As to the radiator, if you are changing it out, I say go with the 4 core. You can never have enough radiator it seems. Especially with A/C and automatic

Here are some cross reference #'s someone provided me but have yet to cofirm them being correct.
Upper hose inlet- Gates 20542==alternate 20704
Lower hose outlet- Gates 20466---NAPA 7272
If you going to go with a 4 row radiator I was sucessful in getting one and would look up info if needed. Pretty sure it was from 1-800-radiator and the fellow was very helpful faxing specs back and forth for a couple of days till we got what I hope is the correct one. It's still in the box.

    Thanks again,
I went to NAPA today and asked my friend John who works there to check the numbers for me that I received from Doug. They cross referenced them to the gates numbers and showed me the hoses. The lower hose was a flex hose and the upper was the same one I have been shown before. I asked John to come out to my car with the upper hose so I could show him what it looked like compared to the one I have on it now, which by the way is the same hose. It did not look like it would fit unless I did a lot of cutting and twisting. He then went back into the area where they keep all such radiator hoses and came out about 10 minutes later with a couple of hoses which would work much better, but still need some triming. The part numbers for the ones he found for me are NAPA #8817 upper and NAPA#8484 lower. They are both an 1"and 1/2 ID. They also found a radiator in Phoenix that is correct for the 65 GS according to their part number 331. They are having it shipped up here on Friday for my inspection. If it is correct it will cost me $230.99 plus tax. The upper hose cost me $16.99 and the lower cost $11.99 and it was not a flex hose. That is the latest on my delima for now, thanks again to you all for the help and giving me somewhere to look.

The radiator I ordered came in on Friday and was all wrong. I guess I may have to have one built. Take care all.

I like the ones I have had built by the local shop. They about the same price as the new (wrong) one you looked at.
They used the tanks form my Special Wagon radiator (6 banger originally) and put a "D core" between 'em. This cools the 455 engine effectively, even without the fan shroud. I can get the specs on the "D core" from them if you like.

    Thanks Ted,
I will let you know. I am thinking I should have it custom built locally. That way I don't have to ship it back if it wrong. Thanks for the offer. Is yours a 4 row? Take care Ted.

    3 Row

Bill. I stopped by my the ole radiator shoppe today. There are many types of radiator cores out there, the most common from the 60's being like this:

    1# cores depth
    1 ??
    2 1.25"
    3 2"
    4 2.63"
They use 1/2" tubing on 9/16 centers; have a fin count from 8-18 f.p.i. (fins per inch) Typical 10

The D-Core that was recommended to me and works in my Special Wagon 455
    1# cores depth
    1 1"(3/4" tubes)
    2 1.5"
    3 2.25"
    4 3"
    Uses 5/8" tubes on 3/8" centers, f.p.i. 8 to 24. Special is 16 f.p.i.

Bottom line is the D-Core has more surface area compared to the old style, so it works well.

Other bottom line-its more expensive than the old style. But you can use the old tanks and it fits like the old one.

These are #s from RADAC 800-354-9700
The shop that made the Special Radiator:
    D & R Radiator Service
    Rodney Richmond

!st job they did for me I walked in with my 65 Riv Radiator, the guy says whats that, from a old Buick? I knew they were OK.

    Ted,
Thanks for taking the time to send me the specs on the radiator, I will be taking this info to my radiator man. I am inclined to wait till the holidays are over before I make a decision. I appreciate this very much. Take care Ted. Happy holidays.

Year One has reproduction radiators for the '65 and '66 GS in their catalog--has anyone tried getting one from there?

    Brian,
I inquired at Year One and was told these were a 4 to 6 week wait. I dont want to wait 4 to 6 weeks only to find they have sent me a part that must be sent back after I paid for shipping and all that hassle. If anyone at Year one could guarantee it to be correct I might be willing to try.
