While at this years Turkey Rod Run at Daytona International Speedway, I was interviewing fiberglass body part builders looking for a guy who would build 64-65 Skylark/Special bolt on fiberglass hoods for us. I think I found our man!

Not only was he willing to make the mold, but he seemed eager to meet our needs. He had 30 or so hoods on display for many makes and models and they all looked high quality.

He said we will need to deliver to him a hood that we wish to make the mold from. So, if we want a hood scoop, we will have to do all of the grafting and body work to get the hood for the mold perfect. He said it is important that we know that however nice and straight the hood is that we deliver to make the mold from, that is how nice the final fiberglass hoods we get back will be.

Before we can do this deal, we have to all agree on what we want. If I recall correctly, most everyone wanted a cowl hood. If this holds true, we need to decide how tall of a cowl. 2"? 3"? 4"?. Once we decide that, we need to put together a "for real" solid list of people who want the hood and have cash in hand so we can give this deal the incentive it will take to make it happen.

While I do not have a final price. He seemed very motivated to be reasonable.

    Here is the his information:

I would prefer we organize in this thread and get it all together. If we have the interest that I think we will, then I suggest we invite him into this thread to participate directly if that is agreeable to all.

I'm in for a 4" Outlaw Cowl bolt on in the right price and weight range.
My hood with scoop could be used if needed for mold.
Good luck, I tried to make this possible last year while attending Pinks All Out in VA. Not enough interest at that time.
    PM me if need

a 3 or 4 inch would probably go over well. no more air cleaner fitment issues with a sp-1.

I use to wok on the same street as them. I think I know right where they are and if all goes as planned, I'll be up that way this week. If I can stop by and look at his place, I will.

There is already a company making these hoods by me in Naperville. I let the company borrow a steel hood which I never picked up to use as a mold for the inner structure. They already made one for a board member from Texas that's how I got involved with my hood as a loaner.

I think it was $700 + shipping. When I went there they ship COD for the shipping and it's by freight. Their website shows only a pin on but they do make a bolt on.

I would use the $700 as a price reference and less effort to do grafting.

    Just a thought.

I don't know what the final price would be with Fiber Concepts, but I got the impression that with 6 to 10 paid orders it would be significantly less than that.

    Hi guys,

I am the one that Brian helped out w/ the bolt on hood from Glasteck. I will say that mine would have been alot cheaper than $700 dollars if we would have used my orginial cowl scooped steel hood instead of doing a stock hood than adding the scoop but that would have involved me shipping it up and back. If I recall correctly the hood was only around $450-500 dollars as a bolt on. All of the extra money was for the scoop and molding it in. If they had something w/ the scoop already added I am sure it would be in the $500 range.

FYI - these guys where really good to work with.

    Brian, I shot you a PM.:TU:

    thanks

Jim, how much does the glass tek hood weigh and how is the quality, fit and straightness?

I have already bought a spare hood and a 4" cowl scoop and have plans to build my own, and since I'm already into this project for about $150 I'm going to go ahead with it. Hoping to get started on that soon.

Years ago I bought a Harwood 4" cowl bolt-on hood for a `70 Nova. It was a perfect fit and very high quailty but it only weighed 20lbs. less than the original hood. Not a huge difference.

Did the cowl that you purchased have a reinforcing rib that matches the stock hoods style?

I noticed when looking at Fiber Concepts hoods that their 65 Nova hood had a reinforcing rib that was shaped and look just like the factory 65 Skylark hood. This is one of the details that I hope to get right if we can make this project happen.

I will say the craftmanship is top notch but like my orginial hood it doesnt sit flat at the fender line on the passanger side but the hood I modified w/ the cowl scoop does.....so I think that it is car dependent and how good the mold was that the pattern was made from. I don't know if they used the hood Brian loaned them for the complete pattern or use the pattern they had for the top side and just used Brian's for the underside to make it bolt on. Other than that and a small area that needs cleaned up at the front of cowl scoop were it meets the orginial hood line it is very nice.

In fact this is as nice as any fiberglass piece I have used or seen. Nice group of guys too....help w/ any questions and was done as promised.

    Hope that helps.:beer
