Yup. You nailed it. It's the temperature, not the material.

So did any of the '58s come with auto headlight dimmer? This car seems to have one but maybe it's an add on.

I don't know for a fact if it was an option in 1958, but I do know that the "autronic eye" was an option in 1957. A good friend had a '57 Olds with one.

Yes it was an option. Both of my 58's have had them.

I'd like to see a lot more photos after you drag it out. Photos before and after clean up. I love seeing barn found cars.

Will do. It is super tight in the garage. As you can see in photos you can't even get in the drivers side because the '60 olds 98 is so close. I had to roll the passenger window down and crawl through it to get inside.

I'm itching really bad right now because I want to get started but we still have snow and I don't think we can get the barge out with it still on the ground.

I'd love to see your progress. We just bought a 52 that will need a ton of work. Should have it here in a few days.

    Welcome !!
You should start a thread of your progress on the car.
This is great site for advice and a help to find parts.
I love to see pictures of old Buicks !!

    Nice project!

You've definitely got a lot of work ahead, but in the end it'll be worth it.

What's the story on the 60 Olds parked next to the 58 Buick? They weren't bad cars either, and are probably at the lowest point of their depreciation scale right now, so should be cheap to acquire. Since the car has very conservative lines as compared to it's other "cousins" built in 1960, it wasn't in as much demand. But I think it's a lot more timeless and shouldn't be overlooked. They have a cool interior too.

My Dad's first real reliable car in this country was a 58 Super. I remember them well, and it is why I love Buicks today.

The 60 Olds has been on blocks for more than 20 years and the motor is seized. He has a very rusted roller outside with engine and tranny and in the basement atleast a dozen panels. Fronts back doors everything lol. Back window is blown out and the interior is shot.

Very nice car. 58's have always been one of my favorites. I take it your pretty young, I'm impressed you like the car. It will need a lot of work but it will be worth it.

    Luxus,

Im 23 so most likely one of the younger ones on this forum. My dad was and still is into cars a lot. His first car was a 65 Mustang 2+2, then a 68 Chevelle and plenty more after that. All his stories about his cars and the shenanigans in those cars is why Im into cars. Something about those old cars i guess, all the cars these days are steel blobs painted silver lol.

    Too bad about the Olds.

But with the 58, you've definitely got the better car. And I would agree; modern cars are shapeless and boring, but, unfortunately necessary. If I could, I'd drive an oldie all year round, but with our climate up here there's nothing like a car that actually starts without having to have the hell kicked out of it, and heat can be highly underrated.
