I had some communication with him. Says the VIN is stamped in the block, but not in the usual places. Probably a dealer service job if anything.

It's so rare, he decided tofind a 430-4 air cleaner (or decal) to put on it. So the engine would be original with a 455, but he had to use a non-original air cleaner/decal?

Horsefeathers. If it was real, he would have to have documentation, which he would post, and it would be worth alot of $$

VIN no. indicates an early '69, probably built late '68 -
can't tell clearly from the engine bay photo, but it sure looks like it came with a 430 to me ! :Do No:

The dealers didn't restamp the VIN on service replacement blocks. The guy is either clueless or full of crap.

Hey, im here to tell you guys that me and my friend restored the car, we pulled it out of a field about a year a go and have been working on it since, spending every penny on it.as the car was previosly owned my the pickton family in poco, and if you guys dont believe us for the second time phone him, him number is 604-472-9123. On the back of the block it says"455", and the guy we bought it off was original, and other sources have told us it was original, thats all were going off.And for the guy who said he would ony pay 1200 for it, dont say that, im only 14 years old and my friend is 15, your telling us that we worked for over a year and you only think its worth 1200, not mature, and this is comming from a 14 year old.

U guys make me sick, saying all this stuff to to kids who arent even old eoughf to drive, infact right now im in the library at school writing this.

If you dont like the just dont bid on it

    you guys make me sick

This Board has 16,000 members and probably the greatest collection of Buick experience that exists. Many were driving and dealing with Buicks when your car was built. I am sure these guys are just trying to keep you from inadvertently misrepresenting the car. It started with a 430 cid engine and somewhere along the way it was changed to a 455. There is no such thing as a 69 1/2 model. Now the 1970 car production year started in August 1969 and ran to July 1970. In turn the 69 model year started in August 68 and ran to July 1969. This may be the source of your confusion.

I suspect that if you looked where we direct you will find that the 455 is a service replacement block or alternatively it carries the numbers from another car. Are you ready to accept the challlenge?

Here's an idea: Edit the above post to say something like: "I'm only 14 years old. I must have been misinformed. Help me figure it out."
Otherwise the whole Buick community is going to see what a punk kid you made yourself out to be.
    Just a suggestion...
BTW, if you really did do the work on that car, it turned out nice. It should bring some $$$. If you take the info you get here and update your ad with CORRECTED information, you will likely get more $$$ in the end. Just a suggestion...

There is no real dispute about whether the block is a 455. We all can accept there have been some put in 60s Rivs that came from the factory with other powerplants. There are such cars belonging to members of this Board. The issue is your assertion that your Riv came from the factory with this 455. Someone gave you some bad info about that issue. Take a pic of your cowl tag and the partial VIN stamped on your engine and let us know when you are ready to send those. We will post those pictures for you.

While you're at it, take photos of the part numbers on the heads (under the valve covers) and even pictures of the intake manifold (including part numbers). If it turns out they're stamped with part numbers from the early to mid-70's, that would be important.

The point isn't what's in it, but that it didn't come in it originally. If it did - it would be a lot bigger deal than you realize. If anything, the members here are saving you the nasty end of a lawsuit when the new owner stumbles across this site and does take all the photos and numbers down and are shown how the motor wasn't original. Since you aren't old enough to legally own the car, it will be your parents that find themselves receiving letters from lawyers.

Whether or not it's worth $X is a completely different question. It's worth what someone will pay for it - but they need to have accurate information to guide their bid.

Dude, ease up some. If that car really has a 455 that came from the factory, and the date codes match, then Buick did something no one has ever heard of before, and you should be seeing Barret Jackson bidding on it. From all the combined years of information sharing on this board, it's either a replacement engine or you have a one of a kind experimental car that no knows of. And some of the guys here actually worked for Buick in the 60-70's. And incidently, you DO sound like a couple of punk ass kids, honda or not. You did a great job fixing that car up and it looks good. Don't spoil it by being an ass! When I was your age I also thought I knew it all, but age teaches you that the TRUE answers never come easy. I think if you do a little more research and keep an open mind, you'll find out what happened to the original motor. By the way, even if its not original, a 455 is more powerful than a 430, right? You gotta be careful before you advertise something as "RARE" or "ORIGINAL". Worse yet, youll get sued!

The block casting number in the ad has 1241735. Assuming the buicks.net reference page is correct - that would be a 1972-75 block:
    http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/bigblock_casting_numbers.html

The image of the motor also appears that it has an EGR valve at the back of the intake manifold.
The valve covers look like a later 455 also, but I don't know when they started using that cover. I'm guessing after 1971, since my GS had different ones.

Yes I see that is a ...135 cast so that engine was a later 72 to 75 block. The 72 year started with the ...661 cast continued from 1971. So someone hurt his original 430 in 72 or later and changed the 430 out for the the low compression 455 engine. This piece of the puzzle ends all debate about whether this Riv was sold with a 455. It was not sold with this one because this engine was not made until 2-5 years after the car was released from the factory.
