Thinking of buying smaller cam for next go around. Who likes the 413? Smooth idle in 455? I have a 3000 stall and I want to shift at 5500.
I have it. Hi Ken; I have the TA 413 cam in my 455. I actualy just got it "broke in." I like it alot! Still has enough vaccum for brakes and all. However it does not idle smooth. It is choppy and sounds real healthy on the street. It likes big carbs. I set the idle at around 600 to 800 rpm. It will run at 500 rpm but pretty touchy that low. With your stall 800 rpm will be good. This cam makes power in the 2000 to 6000 rpm range. It's Real Strong as the rpm's climb. It will love your converter. Mike
My 413 likes shift points around 6000 rpm's. I did some home porting, on my small valve heads (could be part of the reason). I've ran 2700 and 3200 stall converters with this cam, both worked nicely with 3.42 gears, Q-Jet and single plane.
Cray Your cam is not smooth at idle! Hey Cray follow me to Henderson early Sat morning for the drag racers reunion. Sox and Martin, Hubert Platt, Linda Vaughn, and many others and their cars will be there. Jungle Pam was in contact but I do not know if she is going to make it. They have had several thousand muscle cars the last two years. They have a web page I can link
Not smooth at idle but will turn heads as you drive by. Does not like stock carb. Mine idles at 800 to 900 in gear. Does have enough vacuumn for power brakes and heater controls. Gas milage is not terrible (10 to 14) with 200r4. Does not like lockup in 4th gear below 2000 rpm and will not pull until 3000 in that gear. I am still in the initial tuning stages and need a lot of carb work. The carb (800 cfm qjet) is from my old motor and worked perfectly (poston 113 cam) On new motor with ported heads runs lean.
Here's a little clip of my TA413 cammed 463" - it was specially ground on 118 deg lobe centers (113 deg. stock) so a stock on has an even choppier idle. http://itnmedia.com/alan/revitup.wmv Here's a video clip of a full pass - Im running 3.08 gears so thats why it isn't wound up when finishing the 1/4 mile - but its still pulling like a frieght train !! http://itnmedia.com/alan/alan1266.wmv Do I like it ?? Hell yeah....but I dont really have mcuh to compare it to. I've had this 413 build together for 6 years now, with Gessler full race ported Iron Stage1 heads and holley 850DP on a worked B4B. Last build was a KB118 cam, stock S1 heads and a Q-Jet ontop of the stock B4B and 3.42 gears. The difference is mild to wild. The idle isn't obnoxious but its definately not smooth. Your 3000 stall converter should eat up some of the harshness while sitting at a red light. Im running a 2300 stall loose 11" and it tames it a bit too Hope this helps
I run one, very pleased with the idle and vaccum. SP-1 + 800 Q-jet + iron Stage-1 with lower flow #'s. It's nicely in the grey are between smooth and rough. Idles 600 in gear, 800 neutral. 16" of Vaccum. Nice piece overall...
Thanks for the compliment....the cam is kinda old school now though Phil - How big is the Clip ?? if its under 5 meg, send it to me and I'll host it for you Alan@itnnetworks.com
I've got the 288-96H cam. If I can figure out how to record it, once I get it home, I'll make a recording. It's got a nice sounding idle at around 850, in gear. It also pulls between 14 and 15 inches of steady vacuum. I've got an Archos 15gb Jukebox mp3 player. I think it'll allow me to digitally record.
John, I hope to get the car home this weekend. It's done other than missing with the governer mods and having the trans shift at 5500 instead of 100 or so rpm lower. The TH350 governor is a pain to remove when it's in a car! The setup is as follows: Stock 1976 shortblock (30 years and 70K miles worth). 288-96H cam. I chose this cam due to the low compression and the wide intake centerline - edumacated guess I made. The heads are from Michael Pollack, who went mid 10's with them. They're iron Stage 1's with a lot of work. The intake ports were raised about 3/8" and the early model SP1 was matched to them - that's how I bought them. The carb is an 850 double pumper that Rick Henderson rebuilt and tuned for me. The trans is a TH350 that another friend did for me. The converter is from Jerry Roslie's race car when he bought it. It's a Continental that appears to load up to around 2500 rpm and would probably flash a few hundred rpm more. It's really nothing fancy, but it seems to pull pretty strong considering it's full weight and it still has the 2.56 open rear in it. There are some photos at http://home.earthlink.net/~seeverist/images I think that's the same cam that JW uses for the ~500hp buildups and is listed a couple of steps below the 413.
I'd like to hear that cam also. Hey, this sounds like another "library" we could make here. Sound bites of various cams!!!
I'll see what I can do. I don't have full exhaust either. It's 2.5" and ends at the long case dynomax mufflers.
413 cam vs GS113A I already bought a cam for my new motor, the poston gs113a, but out of curiousity how do you guys think it would compare with TA's 413 cam. I have the TA stage one aluminum heads and will be reworking my performer manifold hopefully by Gessler. I don't have the pistons as yet but will be going about 10 or 10.5 compression. I compared the two on DeskTop Dyno 2000 and the difference was less than 5 HP and TQ. I believe the 413 made 4 more HP but was down 3 or so on the torque side. I've probably run about 20 different cams through the dyno and if you want to know about a specific one, just give me the specs and I'll run it through my engine and PM you with the results.
Earlier this year, I replaced a 413 cam with a 113a. The 413 had a little more power. They both sound the same and I didn't have to change much. But, I would go with the 413 if I had to do it again.
