400 cooling and oil pressure issue

    Yes it was just rotated out of sight in some of the pictures.

    Vacuum canister is B3I or 1
    There is a label 20P-s on the side
    One spring is copperish color.
    Other looks nickle.
    I do remember forsure the mechanic saying he put heavier weights and springs because I have it written down from 2006-7
    Distributor should be the factory date coded but these are the numbers on it
    1111335 9F10 or 9F16

    The B31 advance, if I can remember correctly, is the Crane unit.
    I think Larry's thread has some info on using that.

    The weights and springs also look like a Moroso kit I have laying around. A silver medium spring and a copper light one.

    Thank you John. Still at it with some help from an extremely nice board member that was willing to walk me through the process. Made some head way so far!!

    This was as far as I know how to pull the distributor apart. I think I could get at the screws circled. But I’m not sure what to expect if I remove those. Per Larry’s thread I do not see any plastic tab to hold the vacuum canister in a specific way. I just see it hooked into a plate. And one screw

    Also the copper colored spring definitely was less tension or resistance than the nickle colored one.

    Perfect, Mike.

    That canister can have the diaphragm rate adjusted, how much vacuum (affecting how soon or late the vacuum brings in advance) but this unit does not have the ability to adjust the total limit of amount of timing it will advance (bring in). But that is fine.
    From what we had done, the numbers are OK, but I wanted to be sure we had all mechanical in by 2500 because running your engine to 5000 RPM to overcome heavy springs would not be good for the engine without load (free revving).

    But I see medium and a light spring, and we did see all mechanical in by 2500 RPM (actually it was all in by 2200). So we can proceed.

    That's perfect. 146F for trans fluid to the oil cooler is a good number, and it is dropping 124F oil back into the lube circuit which is dropping your supply temp.

    Checking the pan temp would be the only thing left to check and you can do that the next time you are out for a long drive, but I don't think you are over 160F in the pan by those numbers.

    How did it drive/feel/power?
    Highest coolant temp?

    The other thing I like to check is the temperature at each exhaust pipe/port near the head. I look for temps that are vastly different. That would indicate a lean(if hot) or missing (if colder) cylinder.

    It drove very nice. I didn’t take it up too high or get on it ruff. But a couple of lights I put my foot in the pedal enough to chirp all the gears. I did hit a string of lights. The highest I saw was a hair under 190*. Soon as I got moving it dropped back to 180*. I didn’t hear any noise that sounded odd other than playing with that idol screw. I can’t explain exactly what it sounded like but where it was positioned at that moment it didn’t like it. I changed the spring on the carb to a little stiffer one because it just seem to have to much play with it dropping down when I would put the car from park to reverse.
    Power was there.
    Throttle response seemed immediate.
    Idoling in drive was perfect.
    I put it on the freeway for about 10 minutes at 65-70. Ran great. At 65-70 I’m at 3000rpm.

    Great. :)

    When the weather is good call me, we can check the vacuum and set the idle mixture screws if necessary.

    If they are not set correctly, it can be hard to get the idle to stay where you want with the curb idle screw because it is trying to compensate for a rich or lean idle setting.
