Hey guys i have the 300 CID engine. I converted the ignition with the accel system and put in a new starter. Any ideas on adding a little power and dependability. I'm new to cars, and owned a Harley so never knew dependability lol. Thanks

The 300 came in two barrel (210hp) and four barrel (250hp). They both run pretty well. They make several cams since the same cam works for the 215/300/340 engines. They used the aluminum 215, bored and stroked, in the Land Rover for about 20 years so that may be a source for performance parts. As far as dependability is concerned, HEI is a good move. Make sure the timing chain is in good condition. The 300 is a fairly bullet proof engine, they used a V6 version of that engine in the Gran National. I have 2 65 Specials with 300s in them and they have plenty of power and both my cars get 20 MPG. The 300 is a great engine!

Hi Rob great little engine but not that many performance parts made for them,I put a 350 in my 64 just because there is more parts out there for them ,Parts like a four barrel carb come up for sale here on the board sometimes, not sure if headers are made for the 300 ,but there is lots of great help around here. What part of Chicago you at,Good Luck Chris :TU:

Thanks guys. Ya I really like the engine. It had 57,000 miles on it and started up every time I went out to the garage this winter. More then I can say for my 05 honda lol. Just want to drive the family around and make lots if noise no world of wheels or drags strips. Chris I'm on the far south side.
Ps I have seen headers, but without the cast iron 4 bbl I think I would be wasting gas. Hopefully a manifold wil pop up here one of these days. Until then I'll work on the interior.

Hi Rob. What are your plans for the Engine? I have asset of Hi-Comp pistons if you're planning a re-build. I have a few extra heads as well. I've ported more than a few 300 Heads if you plan on going that route. Just let me know. I put a 350 in my '65 Skylark because I had my 300 pretty well maxed out.

    Ponch,your 300 wasn't maxed out if you weren't running a 350 crank in it.:Brow:

I not only dropped a 350 crank in the Engine Bay, I dropped the rest of the 350 in there too. :TU:

That would make it a 340. They do make 300/340 headers but they are few and far between. If you can find a set they cost $500

  9. I've got a 1965 4bbl intake for $325 which includes the shipping. Thanks Burt

Burt I really appreciate it. I was starting to think that it was the holy grail or something because I've never seen one lol. But my funds are really low right now.

Find the funds as fast as you can,you probably won't have an oppertunity like that again.(very HARD to find, and you are right, that is one of the holy grails for a sbb 300)GL

yep -always liked those motors . light , small , good runners .
$ > dual exhaust , ignition upgrades/tune , large 2 bbl carb addition with cold air and some plenum and port match work .
    $$ > 4 bbl conversion , cam kit , th350 trans with shift kit n cooler ( ck driveshaft/mount needs ) , headers .
    $$$ > OD trans , rear axle upgrade/gears , head work .
and do not forget the shocks , brakes ( disc upgrade , front minimum ) - handling , stopping , safety !
    my 2 cents .

Derek, I Do have a 340 on a stand doing nothing. I was going to drop it in my Skylark until I pit the 350 in there. I'm all done swapping engines. I plan on taking it apart and scrapping it out. My plans were to paint it Green and run my 355 air cleaner and swear it was a 300. But as things are going in my life, it's a no go.

yeah - 340 or 350 a good idea , if you are not concerned with keeping it original . the 340 will look more original though .
and be sure to check out the "300" section up above .

    Take a look @ Hot Rod March 2011 for more info on the 300...<object type="cosymantecnisbfw" cotype="cs" id="SILOBFWOBJECTID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;"></object>

Hey Ponch, why wouldn't you just sell the 340 instead of scrapping it? The TA Rover heads would work on that engine if someone wanted a 350 with al. heads before the actual sbb "350" al. heads came out. A .050" overbore and standared sbb 350 pistons and vola the first al. headed 350 before TA starts selling their sbb al. 350 heads!:Brow:

How much would you want for that 340?

Linden is about 45 miles from me,I'm in Rochester Hills.

Ok so what do you guys recommend. Saving up and just putting a 350 in since the 300 runs just fine now. Or up grading the 300. I'm not worried about keeping it original just a little more kick 4 bbl carb seems a waste without doing headers and a cam and gears. Now I'm talking about half if what a 350 would cost. It already had a th350 trans. Def want to do breaks those drums are brutal to someone who used to disks I guess

Hi Derek. I gave 350 for it. It's on a new $100 stand. How's 250 with the stand. It has smogger heads but I'll give you a set of 300 heads with it. Let me know.

It is up to you... The 300 and the 350 are both great engines.

    Strength of the 300:

Smaller engine, should be better on fuel
Reliable and already in your car

    Strength of the 350:

Lower cost for parts and upgrades
many proven combos from 250 hp to 550 HP
easy to find them bone stock and running well for low cost vs the $350 4bb intake for the 300...
Stock they will out perform all but the radical built 300

Ok so I think Iv decided to go with a 350. The ease of finding parts is the biggest factor. It would make it eaiser to get parts if I was to break down by chance and it also gives me a wiser range of options as far as performance. The 300 will do for now since the finance department ( wife). Would like to see the interior done first. I have seen lots of ads for inexpensive 350's that need work so it will give me a chance to learn how to do my own work within reason. This sight has been a wealth a wealth if knowledge too. Never had so many helpful people on the Harley sights. This is great. Thanks guys. Can't wait for the book either
