I purchased a 2x4 with the correct carbs for my 401 '65 Wildcat. I am having the carbs rebuilt by a local shop. While I have complete confidence in the rebuilder, I want to ask for any advice regarding metering, calibrations, and any pitfalls to avoid.

    Thanks Rick

I'm not by any means an expert on rebuilding these carbs, but here's what happenned to me:

Someone mixed up the accellerator pump springs on mine and I had a stumble that was hard to fix. The front and rear carbs have different springs, and there is 2 on each pump. (4 all together) Better be careful not to mix them up.

Also, the front carb relies on the pump return spring to keep the throttle plates closed. If you use the wrong hole on the pump lever, the throttle will hang open a little and cause an unstable idle speed. The pump setting is critical. I'm not sure if it is correct, but I used the middle hole on the rear carb and the outer hole on the front carb.

This is all I can think of and I hope it helps you.

I never read the section about this in a Buick service manual, I would like to read it if someone could post it. :Brow:

I had posted a page on the duals out of the service manual a while back, I'll try searching for it. :Brow:

    Hey Rick,
Did you just "win" the bidding war for the set-up that went from the board to eplay? :Do No:
Give them carbs to your rebuilder one at a time, that way there is no way he can mix-n-match parts. :TU:

    That was an odd one....

He even posted on the BCA board, and people flamed him there too!

...are you talking about the one with the intake painted red on the hood of the Riviera in Arkansas? No I did buy that one. I did see the bidding war flying around about it on the board though. Looks like someone got a decent deal if the carbs are correct.

I've already delivered the carbs. I'll give him this thread to tip him off to the problem.

I did just score the 2x4 air cleaner on ebay. Don't know if it is a good price or not.

Any comments regarding this setup on a 401?:Do No:

FYI; the book calls for the pump rod to be through the inner hole on BOTH carbs.
I can email you a scan of the calibrations spec's page, if you'd like.
    I found the thread that I posted awhile back but it was just the tuning spec's page, here's the link;

Thanks Robert as always you are a credit to your Wildcat brothers.:TU: I have a service manual I will take to the shop tomorrow along with this thread and your earlier one.

Did you ever find a black steering wheel. There was a NOS fawn one on ebay. Came in second on that one. I would have had to have it redone in red. It matched the buyers interior. I don't think anyone was going to outbid him on that one.

Joe, you've got mail. :Comp: :TU:

    Nope, not yet.
I musta missed that NOS one 'cause I never even saw it there. :puzzled:
I'm thinking maybe a Riviera wood wheel, with a custom 'cat cap, instead. :Brow:

This was in a car at a local show awhile back and I thought it looked real good. :Brow:
I'm not sure if the cap is original or home-made (anyone know for sure?) but it's still cool. :TU:

If you're talking about the steering wheel cap, it's original to that wheel. Probably from a Wildcat. I've got that one on mine, but it has the R on it.:Brow:

Yep, my Rivi had one on it too :ball: but i've only seen them with the "R" cap.
I'm not sure if they were available in the other big cars and if so, what emblem should be in the cap. :puzzled:
I geuss that I could always mount one of these...

I don't mean to spoil your night, but a guy came up to me once and told me he junked his '64 cat with that exact wheel on it unaware of it's value. The yard he sent it to crushes everything it gets unless it's less than 8 years old. I'm just as bad, I gave one away once that was missing the cap and hornbar.:spank:

Paid $135 last summer just for the cap with an "R"! Got a reproduction horn bar from a guy in ohio for $135 for it. Paid $350 for a good wheel with mounting hardware. Total is ridiculous for a wheel, but what do you do if you need one? Seen one on Ebay in early Jan. go for $800. Too bad that one got crushed.

    Don't worry, you didn't.
I gave one away when I sold off my Riviera a few months ago. :ball:

Robert-you and I are thinking the same thing about that Wildcat emblem for the horn bar. I think the '66 hubcap center would look cool too because it has a rounded face on it.

Do you have any more pics of that Wildcat? Is it a '66? Did you look at the headliner?

Rob, I may have slowed Carmen up on your rebuilds, he was waiting for some carb cores from me. As usual, I procrastinated. He does a beauty job though.

This weather is baaaad. Need Nailhead power.

You lucky stiff. I've been looking for a new one of those for a while now. My cap is starting to crack and I had to repair my horn bar. Those are hard to find without the wheel.

    Ted,
If ANYONE could recognize a 65 'cat speedo then it should be you.:spank:
Sorry, I didn't save any other pictures of that car.
It was a beautiful red/black convertible with the duals (and lots of other options) added on by the owner.

    Hey Joe,
Aren't the horn bar and "R" emblem available in reproduction? :Do No:
I seem to remember seeing them somewhere. :puzzled:

    OWTH!

Hey, it was 1:15 in the morning! Dad gum obvious now that you mention it. I was looking at the wood wheel option-in 64-65 it was only offered on Rivieras as far as I could tell. It was probably a dealer added item on Wildcats (or owner added .:Brow: ). In 66 it was on the wholesale order form for the Wildcats, and the production sheets show a few made with the "X1" option
