Man that engine looks real nice!.... where you able to find out what was keeping the engine from running right in the first place?

i think it was just low compression from the rings sticking. the motor was completly filthy inside and out. i dug a good amount of crud from the ring grooves.

yes, 61, auto trans, 2 barrel carb

somethings wrong with the linkage between the carb and trans.
the ends are loose and they're not in the right position. i tried bending the ends a little and now it just seems worse. i can get it close, but then dont have enough adjustment on the linkage. i might try cutting the turnbuckle, shortening it, so i can turn it in more. i also dont have the right throttle return spring, and clearances are tight, and it binds up with a regular coil spring.

well i didnt even know that the gear shifter was linked to the throttle  but that spring you mentioned doesn't look like the same one in my car.

ya, thats what the spring looks like in the manual. i need to find one with the long rod like that, kinda like a brake shoe spring. today i'm gonna do some more tweaking on the rod to get it close to the right position. then i'm gonna weld the ends on so they dont swivel. hopefully then i can get it to hold first gear above 5mph.

now its not shifting out of first. i think the trans linkage is fouling against the spring. will do some more adjustments tomorrow. got rained out and wasnt able to test drive it until now.

why is the gear shifter linked to the throttle anyway? what happens if you unlink them?

its so when you floor it, it shifts down to first.

well i finaly got it sorted out.
auto parts store had generic throttle return springs, with the long rod.
i had to cut down the coiled part and modify it so it doesn't hit any of the linkages. so far it seems to be ok, now just need to fine tune the carb, i think its running a little rich.

Have you tuned the idle mixture screws? I screw them all the way in and then back them out 2.5 turns. Then I put the car in gear with the wheels blocked and then set the idle mixture screws to get highest vacuum readings on a gauge.
