Oh yeah, and GM of Canada just informed me that the GTO is NOT, repeat NOT, available or going to be available in Canada due to different "safety and emissions standards"....

Silly terds. Only car they build with any excitment and you can't buy it here. Figures.

What about the other guys who ACTUALLY own one. As opposed to the ones who have pictures and read articles?

You know, I read an article in Hemming's Muscle Machines this month, I forget his name, but he's one of the contributing editors. He was saying that today's performance car "designers" in Detroit, for the most part, have no creative styling ability or originality to speak of. This is pertaining to many auto makers giving TRUE classic names to today's "attempts" of classics.

I tend to agree. Why dilute what history we have by flooding the field with re-badges of the same name? It's obvious what they are trying to do , but in "my opinion", it just doesn't work.

The old classics, the GSX's, the Chargers and GTO's etc, were original concepts which were successful.

Why do we need to have a GTO again? Or a GSX or Charger for that matter? Can't they give them original names so people will not associate them with classics of yesteryear? Not many kids today even care about or even knew a 64 GTO ever existed anyway. They're not going to buy the car because of that reason.

There will only be one Marilyn Monroe, why does there need to be more than one GTO 30 years later? :puzzled:

Cool, didn't know about that one.

    http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1151&highlight=complaint

4 pages, it takes a while

"In light of the well-known complaints and problems, mostly minor, about the new goat, let us reflect that everything is relative, and we mustn't fail to be appreciative of any decent car at all. Bask in the security of the factory warranty, too."

"I appreciate this car more and more each day. I've never been this passionate about one of my cars. I can't explain it. I take it personally if someone talks bad about this car."

"Mine isn't scheduled to come in 'til next month, but I've been compiling a list of things to look for when I finally do pick it up. I've seen a few problems discussed here, including:

    1. Thunking (banging) noise in rear on hard acceleration (U-joints, differential mounting?)
    2. Display screens under speedometer and fuel and temp gauges dont work. Center display missing bottom half, and two outside displays dont work at all.
    3. Sound system overheats and shuts off at full volume, sometimes even at lower volume
    4. Rear passenger window scratched
    5. Passenger door seal leaks (seals were supposedly qualified for U.S. market)
    6. Defrosters dont adequately clear side windows
    7. Washer system fluid frozen up in cold temperatures
    8. Dashboard emblem fallen off
    9. Low beam headlights extremely short. Seem to illuminate only about 20 feet in front of car.
    10. Creaking noise coming from back of drivers seat.
    11. Shift light doesnt work
    12. Cracked rear bumper
    13. At least one toasted clutch

Do you think these problems are pretty consistent or do they appear to be isolated?"

"I tried filing an online complaint at the DOT / NHTSA website. It requires that you describe a specific incident, such as yours. Unfortunately, the GTO is not in their database yet. I will be calling 1-888-327-4236 tomorrow to see if a complaint can be filed manually with a human. See http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline/ I believe this, and possibly the press, is going to be the most expeditious way to get the headlights fixed, bypassing dealer and GM bullsh**."

I ACTUALLY own one and love it. I can't answer for the other guy, but I haven't had any of those problems. I'm not sure why you would buy two cars if you really wanted a Magnum?

Let us not forget that our cars had problems too. I seem to recall a great deal about oiling problems on early 455 engines in GS cars. This is why the pasages were opened up on later blocks.

    Ken,

The GSX was not a successful car when new, they only sold 678. By that standard you could say it was a failure, but happy to own that failure today! My car was sold back to Buick at least once because they could not move it.

As far as kids not knowing what a GTO is, I think you would be quite surprised at the positive reaction this new Goat gets with the younger set.

I think you could be right in saying that we needn't build these kind of cars anymore. I mean look at the negative response from the "so called car guys."
I think we should be careful what we wish for.

  14. One thing that never dawned on me till today on my drive into work; the rather unaggressive styling of the GTO certainly allows the car to blend in with other cars. Why is this good?

COPS WILL BE MORE LIKELY TO LEAVE YOU ALONE!!!

Case in point: guy came by me on the highway doing about 80 (I was doing 75) and then there's a cop hiding under the bridge. RED GTO in fast lane, I'm in the left middle. Cop doesn't blink and we both continue on. While that may not always happen, I'm sure it helps. Had this guy been in a red Firebird or Mustang I'm sure the cop would have raised an eyebrow.

In regards to the Magnum, my old boss's husband works at a local Dodge dealer, apparently those and the 300C's have a flood of problems that have yet to be resolved by Chrysler. So DC's streak of poorly built and unreliable cars continues...

Plus the Magnum is ugly. Looks like a turd with a plus-sign on the front.

    Jim,

I can vouch for the quality problems with Diamler-Chrysler, my dad is a Mercedes Benz Tech, and it's nothing but bad news for the company. Hopefully they will be able to pull it around, but it might take awhile.

Bash GM all you want, but they rank #4 in the world for quality.
    Toyota
    Honda
    Porche
    GM

Pretty good considering the number of vehicles GM builds per year worldwide.

You lucky bas****!!! I only wish I could own one, not available here, and that sucks. When I was in the states, I drove 50 miles just to look at one, place was closed but I got a decent look and I liked it.

I think a lot of so called car guys are just upset that the new rides will polish off their old ones without a sweat. I guess GM should have stmaped out the old GTO all over again, then eveyrone would bitch about wind noise, leaky weatherstripping, engine noise, clunks, trim falling off etc....As for the problems, go to a mercedes forum or a ferrari forum or nissan forum or a honda forum or a >>insert manufacturer here<< forum and you will find a list a mile long....people bitch online and love it. I found many, many more threads with happy people than unhappy ones...

    Enjoy the car.

Thanks Tim. Sorry to hear you can't get a Goat up there in the frozen northlands....yet.

All that really matters is that we enjoy the cars that turn us on for what ever reason, rational or not.

I know, I got sick of my oil pressure in the 70 after 247,839 miles so I took the engine out to rebuild it.

  19. msc66

    msc66 still no vacuum

You know, the new GTO may be bland looking but at least it isn't butt ugly like the Chrysler 300 or Magnum and hey, its alot better than the Monte SS isn't it? As for it being Aussie built well Holden never gave up on rear drive V8 performance so what makes them worse than the Dodge/Chryslers? At least Holden is a GM company unlike the German owned Mopar.

The new Zeta platform that the Buick Velite will be based on is being developed by Holden as well and in my mind, who better to do it than a company that has been doing V8 rear drive performance all along. Face it, the world is getting smaller. I'm just happy that in 10 yrs there will be used V8 rear drive cars available for me to buy.

As for the Mustang, if you want a car that looks like an old car then why not buy a '68 fastback, haul it to a good shop and have the pro touring thing done? I think this retro styling is getting a little old.

  20. StageTwo

    StageTwo It's a Beauty Too.

I kinda agree. Buick didn't need to rely on older icons like "GS" or "Wildcat" when they gave us the Grand National. But if Buick had been building Gran Sports for the last 30 years, then I wouldn't mind a little retro-style hood scoops or something. I think GM should design another rear-wheel drive V8 "muscle car" platform for all the divisions to play with and give us new names to talk about.

Anybody got any cool names Buick, Pontiac, Chevy, or even Cadillac could use?
