Anyone remember the event? It was on the same Sat. as the GS Nats that year. MuscleCar Review and Car Craft were there. Here are 3 pics of Dad racing in it with the '71. It was his 1st time on the track and the low 15 ET's show it..lol. I was 14 then. His name and ET was in the Musclecar Review mag. I need to get Dad's copy and reread it. I think he was 38th out of 46 cars that raced. He got some 14.70's at Bowling Green later that year with some practice and tips from other racers that he and J.C. met there. John Chamberlain, Dan Jensen and his brother was racing along with J.C. Brown who owned a black '67 Chevelle SS at the time before he started racing a GN later when the '87s came out. About every brand X car was represented. John's GS was the quickest car there in qualifying with Dan's Pontiac T-37 a very close second. J.C.'s SS was third quickest I think. Anyone else there?

    Yep

I was there with my brother Chris, our first GS Nationals, drove '85 Riviera left Flint with 350 miles, we were supposed to take his '73 GS455, but the porportioning valve for the brakes let go and he hit a pole on his way to work a couple of weeks before, so it wasn't fixed in time. I'll get some pics and scan.

This Electra was in the parking lot, not in the show, owned by a Insurance salesman, dressed in plaid jacket, was a 2-4 engine, never saw it again, ever.

I was in high school then. The Super Car Showdowns is what got me interested in Buicks.

Ran the "Showdowns" NUMEROUS times between when at Quaker (86-97) and the final one at National Trails in 98.
Brother, Bill, Finished 3rd in 86 with the Stage1 Convertible, got beat by Meno's Firebird or Karcacians (SP) Super Bee. (Don't Remember which)
He won Bracket for something like 3 Years with his 70 455, and I ran the 70 Convt. in 89 then my 72 in 90-91, Bill's 70 in 94, then back with the 72 from 95-98.
    Those were FUN events.

I was there running my 67 GS400. It was the first time I had driven on a drag strip. Talked to Chuck Green the night before after taking a couple guys for a ride. Chuck said no problem, be at tech in the morning, pass it -you can run. "For ten bucks entry fee, you might get your your car in a magazine". I ran a best of 14.02@97.08. Car was pictured in a line -up pic in Car Craft, placed 13 out of 46 entrys on a chart in car review , and a pic and article in the GSXtra. I have a video tape of the event, all the magazines, and a particpation plaque. Have many pics of the cars racing and at the show. That was the begining-"and the rest is history". Can still remember it like it was yesterday.

Over the winter I made a DVD copy of the VHS tape Chuck Green send Dad. I couldn't believe after all those the years the tape hadn't degraded enough to be noticed while I was making a copy. Remember how kinda rundown Beech Bend was before Dallas Jones bought it? I believe Ronnie Milsap owned it before and just had it for a tax writeoff. I remember Mikes '67 GS400. It and the red '70 GTO Judge that Dan Jensens brother drove there sticks out in my mind when I think of the meet. That was the first time I had seen so many different musclecars at the same place and the same time flogging them. I got the bug then and it never went away. I remember Dad and J.C. Brown on days leading up to the meet. Dad was laid back and excited because he never raced before and had no idea how to prepare and J.C. was out every night tinkering with his Chevelle trying to get that last bit of HP. J.C. thought if it didn't break you wasn't trying hard enuff and Dad thought if it broke you screwed up. Different as night and day. They went to school together and lived across town from each other. Dad calls him the worlds oldest teenager..lol. He gave dad some tips the next time they were at the track and that helped Dad get into the mid 14s. He only raced the GSX one or two times after that because he worried about breaking stuff and I am glad he felt that way now. He also got Dad into Grand Nationals and he purchased one of his two about 6 months after J.C. bought his 1st one. I think a man in the next town down the road owns J.C.'s Chevelle SS now and I don't have any idea where his GN race car went. I kinda think it was more fun at older meets back in the '80s and early 90s even though they weren't as well organized or covered as much in mags. More laid back perhaps.

The 67 Wildcat 4dr in the left lane was Larry Simek from Bossier City, LA and am pretty sure the white wagon was George Hall from Michigan.
