A couple of sources of scanning.

Check architect offices. They have large format scanners sometimes to copy plans.

Also, your local counties will sometimes have a large scale scanner to archive survey drawings.

Cost from a county should be minimal, but I'm not sure of the resolution of either source.

You have to understand that digital copies are easily distiguished from originals. I have a friend in the reproduction business that got busted because a client was copying photos of NFL players...Not fun.

As for scanning, you want an image that is 150 dpi at full size. That should be high enough resolution to accomplish what you want to do. Oce in my experience makes the better scanners for capturing an image like this.

    Tom,

I work for an engineering firm in Oak Brook and we have a large format plotter but we do not have a large format scanner. We use a prinnting service in Elmhurst for that. It is pretty cheap to have things scanned but I am not sure that they will do it do to the fact that it might be copyrighted. Are there any markings on the poster that state t is copyrighted? I could probably print several of these but it would be on a bright white inkjet paper. I think that it would look pretty good especially if it was put behind glass.

I agree that if you are going to plan on selling copies I would be careful.
If you scanned it and GAVE away some digital copies, just so people could look at it, it might not be so bad.
Once money exchanges hands you want to be careful.
Might be easy to get permission though, if you can find out who made them.

I am quite sure that the Buick marketing people made up the poster for dealers to display. This was 38 years ago and I would doubt that anyone would be coming after you regarding copyright infringement, any employees that were involved are probably retired by now.

That is a very naive and dangerous assumption. GM licensing does not die with people. If GM produced it, I guarantee it is copyrighted. GM licensing takes this very seriously. It's like getting NFL or NCAA licensing. Not trying to be a downer, that is just the way it is. Be careful.

I was more worried about copying a print and as a result, having a very weird morire pattern due to the original printing process.I've heard a Scanwizard Descreen filter has been used to some success with additional filter work. This is not just a scan and print project. The set-up is gonna take time-just like checking and rechecking engine specs on assem. Which may be the reason for the $$$$$$$$$

Unless I'm blind, I don't see a copyright tag on the print either...:beer

Our country has gotten too complicated. A forty year old poster. Probably not a handful left. A few hundred people nation wide that would even pay $30 or more for one copied. Instead of being easy now one must worry about copying a few of them. Having to take time to contact GM and go through all the BS could be the end of this. It's not like there is a lot of money to be made. I bet it will just be a tid bit over cost in the end.

I'd be surprised if Tom sells half of that figure. I think its ludicrous to think that Buick or GM is going to care about 30 or 40 copies of some poster from 40 years ago.

I would think after 40 years, its in the public domain anyway. Either way, no one is going to say anything about it.

I spoke with Dave Benisek about the poster today, he said that the guy he drove the car for, Bill Trevor, an instructor at the GM Training center, asked a marketing guy at the LA Buick zone office to have some posters made to distribute to dealers. Dave doubts that Buick corporate even knew about request since it was more of a local west coast thing.

I didn't mean he would sell that many. Just saying there probably wouldn't be that many people nationwide that would even want one. If he sold 50 on here it would surprise me. Hope we have the chance to buy.

For $50 I'd take One. But I have spoken to a few Buick Lapel button sellers on e-bay and GM is raising hell with them for selling GM stuff. I don't know the full story, but I do know there are only a few different Buick pin's out there and that's it. GM lawyers ARE looking into copyright infringement laws. But if this poster was just an aside, go to it. Let me know when they're ready.

That's how I used to get rid of tickets to shows. The ticket was free, but the shirt was $100:beer

It's very possible that GM would buy into the didn't know better or $50 "donation" thing except this thread would prove that the seller knew there were potential issues with doing it.
