I'm also curious to see how this looks after someone sprays a coat of black on it, as Jim Rodgers states in Todd's other thread.
Yes, painted and installed. I have an almost NOS RT, but could never bring myself to put it on the car, because I figured if it got stolen I'd be screwed. That's because the car's never on a trailer, sometimes I leave it at hotels at night, etc.
I'm curious to see how this effects the prices of both the NOS and good used mirrors. So far, it looks like TPP hit a home run with this piece, though. Maybe they should do the 2 wire spark plug looms next....or clear top overflow tanks....
Its a nice piece and very needed, but there is nothing like NOS or factory chrome plating in my opinion
Mounted mine this evening. Gasket and mount bracket vary in design and fit compared to the original driver's side on my car but the quality of the mirror is excellent. I doubt I could rechrome an original mirror for the price of the repop.
Not really, there are those of us that will still pay the money to put an NOS item on a car versus a repop - if it were a common item there may be a price drop, but NOS 70 passenger side mirror is still going to be scarce. If you are spending the big bucks for a proper restoration why would you cheap out on a mirror? That has proven out on other rarer NOS parts that have been repopped.
Happy for everybody that needs one.But to late for me I put a NOS on the 1970 Burgundy mist GS 455 I restored Such is life Alain
In general I think it would depend of the quality/authenticity of the repro. I'd rather the repro be be priced higher to make it correctly to where you virtually couldn't tell the difference in appearance or fitment. Otherwise you're correct, the price for NOS won't drop precipitously and far more often than not, that's what we see.
Yup, I put one on my old 350 4-sp. resto. I sold my last NOS one in anticipation of this (and two others prev. - Both in pkg. deals w/cars) - Still have an extremely nice used used one that I paid a lot for that would look perfect on an older resto or super nice orig. car where new chrome might look out of place.
Could someone measure and report on the range of adjustment angles between the base and head? Wondering if I could use one on my 72 Electra. I'm still running round with the embarrassing wrong mirror and kludged wooden base template... Cheers Bob
Bob, you have several challenges in putting a mirror on your Electra. This particular mirror only has a certain range of tilt/angle. It's fine for a Skylark if it's installed in the right place. Seeing as the same mirror was used for all 70, it should be fine for all 70, except it only comes with one Skylark RH gasket. I don't know if you need different gaskets for different models. I suspect you do, so Riviera and big car guys need to look into that. I don't know if a 70 Electra door is the same as a 72 door. You need to find or make a template for your 72. Here's what I know for sure. I have a 72 all model (I think) NOS mirror here. It has 4 different gaskets. The Skylark gasket is flat, while other gaskets have an angle built into them. I think it does have a template for Electra. I know that the screw holes for that mirror are slightly further apart than a 70 mirror. I don't know if what's on your car now is OEM, if it's approximately opposite the driver's mirror.
