I saw a 1970 455 block with a SS block code this past week on eBay. It went up to over $600 and not reach reserve.

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any differences in a SS block then any other blocks from the same year and what a ball park cost of one of these things is?

    No differences in block castings...

The last Stage1 block (71) went for about $1000....I think that was GKMoz's block too....TS code.

Wow, $1000 for a block. Well I guess my car will just have to have the wrong block code. I didn't think there were any differences. Thanks for the info Adam.

:puzzled: Hey people are paying $ 2000 for a hunk of plastic what's wrong with $1000 for a hunk of iron :puzzled: :Do No:

besides nothing beats a genuine 400 / 455 stage 1 engine sitting under your hood :Brow: :TU:

:3gears: hmmm.... I wonder what a complete one would fetch :eek2:

That makes 2 of us! Can't find a "REAL" SS code block. Gotta watch it, alot of people are trying to pawn off restamped blocks as originals. Would love to find one to put my 70 Stage 1, 4 speed back to original.

Please consider registering your Stage1 cars.

    Thanks!

PS - IMHO, if your building a non-matching motor anyway, have fun with it. Like Adam stated, there is no difference in an 'SS' block, as compared to an 'SR' or 'SF' block (unless it matches your VIN :Brow: ).

Use a 'beefier' block from '75-'76.

    Re: SS block code

The 'SS' signifies the Buick motor code
    1st 'S' - 1970 model year
    2nd 'S' - Stage1 motor

All Stage1 blocks end in 'S'

On the deck right beside the oil dip stick. May be hard to see or missing if it has been resurfaced.

MARKO, I think he wants to know where the "SS" is stamped on the block!

If the block has not been decked, the "SS" should be on the drivers side of the block, between the the last two spark plugs!

It is stamped into the flat surface just above those two plugs.

You may have to remove paint or grime to find them. Use a light and look at different angles, because sometimes their hard to see!

    GOOD "TUFBUICK"

Well, it is back again now. It didn't sell for $611 because of reserve last week. Here is the link:

If I had the money I would love to get it. Just don't have it right now. Maybe in a couple of years.

Hey Marco, I am still waiting for my papers for the guy I bought it from last year. When I get them I will register mine.

I'd like to know if only the stage one blocks had a code SS.I have a #s matching 1970 455 i thought. The block is stamped SS? anybody know?It was'nt made in flint as i thought all stage 1s were. But the vin# is stamped under the power steering pump.

Only Stage1 blocks had the SS stamping....unless of course someone drank too much the night before and decided to stamp all the 455 blocks that day with the SS code

Have you verified the VIN on the motor with the VIN on the car?

Hi djd35de, from what I know and read, all SS blocks were Stage 1 blocks. But, I think you are right as all Stage 1 cars were made in Flint. VIN on block matches, weird. You might put up the VIN and see if someone can decode it.

Hey here is the vin #446370Z105413 Its also stamped under the power steering pump. I was under the impression its a numbers matching 455. I have'nt pulled the heads or anything and the guy i bought it from had like 5 of these cars and he knew all about the numbers ect... He changed the carb to i believe a 72 800 cfm so i can't verify by the carb ect. I think the car was made in vermont,Whats the normal code for just a non 455 block?

By the way the car was running like 1380s-1400s bone stock at the track.but the engine was tired and has 3 semi flat cam lobes.

OK, I will give it a try.
    4 - Buick
    46 - GS455 for 1970
    37 - 2 door hardtop coupe
    0 - 1970 model year
Z - maid in Fremont, CA
105413 - production number and should match last 6 digits on block.

What is the build date on the Fischer Body plate?

But this thread should really be moved to "The Paper Trail"....:bglasses:

Oh yeah, the standard 455 code in 70 was "SR".
