I know everyone with a 1970 Buick GS has a special rear end so I have a couple questions.

    1. What have people been doing to restore these rear ends?

    2. I talked to Richmond Gear yesterday and they indicated they can make sets. What they need is an orginal set of gears to verify they have the tooling. If they have the tooling it will be $300-$600 a set. If they do not have the tooling it will be that cost plus $8000-$10000 for the tooling (one time cost). The minimum order is 30 sets. Which totals $9000-$24000. The turn around time is 6-10 weeks and an additional 90 days if they need to order tooling.

Who would be willing to prepay for a set of gear?
What ratio would you want 3.64? 3.42? 3.23? They can make any ratio.

If the monies were held by a 3rd party until completion of gears are acceptible to the public. Then, I would be in. :3gears:

Maybe I'm missing something here but isn't this already offered aftermarket. I had Jim Monzaz on this board help me set up the Posi and Gears in my 70 GS 8.2. I can't remember the carrier brand but the only real issue is using the correct carrier bearings due to the different size on each size of the carrier.:Do No:

You have some bad info. No one remakes the 68-70 Buick 8.2 gear set. So often people thenik the BOP gear sets 65-67 are the same.

I have a worn out set of 3.64's I would donate for the cause, but would either want them back or possibly a guarantee of a new set in return (otherwise my ON rear end and carrier is no good at all). I will even take a set of 3.42's or 3.23's since I believe that would be a better gear for the street. I am in for at least one set, and possibly two.

Jim Mitschke (monzaz) can rebuild or replace the worn out posi units, but he has no source for ring and pinion gears. He re-uses the Buick only 8.2 gear sets, and may pre-order some sets as well.

I spoke to Dave Kleiner when shopping for some 3.64's, and I know he would also want to purchase some as well, but he doesn't use the internet much so he may not reply.

Thanks for taking the time to start this endeavor, Mark. :TU:

That's why I love this site, you learn something new every day. Sorry for the inaccurate information. :spank:

I am sure I only helped with the posi. The gears DO NOT exsist in the aftermarket.

On the info: I am sure Richmond does NOT have the tooling for this diff. I do not believe anyone has ever produced a aftermarket gear for this rear ever. At the time I am sure there were NOT too many people racing the Buick Skylark. :) BUT now is a totally different story. That is gonna be a tough call. If I had the funds It might be a worth while investment. Seems as if the lowest the price will be on these gears is 300.00 NOT including shipping. Pretty tough sale. If you can get a Randy's ring and pinion involved we might be able to do a 1000 run. Jim

I spoke to Randy's ring and Pinion and they did not seem interested. Maybe I need to talk to the right person. If you know someone to talk to there let me know. I will gladly make the call but if the above response is any indication of the interest than it may not be a worthwhile effort.

    To The Top...

There has to be more interest for the 8.2 gear sets than this!

    Mark,
Can I send my ring and pinion to Richmond for them to inspect? It's just sitting on my work bench...

I will throw in for at least one set. I see Joe C is looking a set. I will ask him to take a look also.

Anyone else with a 1970 GS interested in voting? Anyone? Anyone?

With my 1968 8.2 2.56 posi, I'd need more than just new gears. But I would love to go to a 3.42 rear. Just not sure if my interest level justifies voting.

With Monzaz being able to modify the BOP Auburn posi to fit in our housings and work with the stock ring and pinion this would be a great opportunity for the guys that want to keep their cars truly #'s match.
I'd be in for a set of 3.42s.
I was bidding and lost out on a set of used 3.23's on ebay a few weeks ago. They went for over $300. So I know there is a market for these.

  14. There is more than one person who can modify the auburn and eaton posi carriers to work in the 68-7-0 Buick 8.2 rears. Randy's ring and pinion was doing it 6 or 7 years ago. why use an auburn carrier when an Eaton can be used and it's a far superior part and rebuildable

Feel free to use which ever posi unit you want. Point is all we need is gears.

While we are doing a wish list, how about the cones too?

I could use a set of 3.64 gears. I have perfect condition 3.42's in the X but I would like to use the original ratio. The car came with a 12-bolt and 3.90 gears which I removed and replaced with an O-O posi from an automatic tranny Stage 1. I haven't located the correct rear for a 4-speed.

Fortunately, I have a spare cone posi unit if the old one dies.

Richmond Gear currently has my original 3.64 ring and pinion and will be providing us a quote very soon. The bottom line is that they have agreed to produce them, but with a minimum number of sets for each ratio it unfortunately will rely on economics as to whether or not it happens.

Please get the word out to anyone you know who has a 68-70 Buick only 8.2 rear end that is looking for gears, or possibly someone who wants to invest in a set for future use.

    James,
I would also be interesteed in a set that would be correct for an auto, non air car.
Thanks for looking in to this!!
