I'll take a stab at it. Saying Tommy Rose.

Chuck's GS was a silver type color he had since sold it and bought a T-Type way back and got into racing it. I used to be lined up next to him in the GS Racecar Show Class. Quiet guy and a real gentleman.

Jim Rorabaugh a first class great person I believe is either in PA or Kentucky? He still has the car and his son we see once in a while at the Cecil County Meet or at BG

Ken and Steve I may have met but don't realy know.

Wasn't Tommy Rose into frame off restos back then? He had a beautiful red GS I think with a white interior, back then and he got some magazine coverage. Unsure of the year (70-72's style). Though I remember it being before 2003.

Cool thread! :TU: I love stuff like this. I could never make it to the nats back then b/c of work and things but always kept track through the news letters. You guys are lucky to have been apart of that and have the memories.

I always thought Jim Turners car was the ultimate. Pat, great job on the restoration! Looks nice! You need to bring it to some of the meets :TU:

And here's another guy that we used to see many years ago at the GS Nationals- George Hall. Those of you that remember,George had a Regal wagon that ran low 11's and would often run in the quick 16 bracket class.

Steve, I believe you are correct on that being the first real street car to make an 11 sec pass (during competition). I drove that car down to BG and we picked Ken up at the airport as he was in college at the time. That engine was a true 10.2:1, B4B, headers, 1000 cfm thermoquat, and an early KB118/107 (0.473) lift, later 0.499).

Two years after that we changed cams in Norm's silver mist car in the parking lot of the holiday inn and won the class. It might have been Jr. Stock at the time. Anyone remember that swap? That was a lot of fun!

    The Holidome Parking Lot.......

    Rob,

I do remember that cam swap in the back of the Holidome Parking Lot.........there was a lot of :beer going on while you guys were working !!!
In fact, that was the same year that Chuck Strater jacked is car up in the middle of the staging lanes to pull his rear tires off so that Jim Rorabaugh could use them to race :eek2: Those were some good times......

Rusty and the '67 are "supposed" to show up at the Brand X Bash in Temple, TX in two weeks.

they were supposed to be at the X bash last year but the 67 had an engine issue, He and the car will be a welcome sight for sure this year. I asked about him a while back in 2004 to see if we could get him and the car to a race again. :beer

If Rusty does make It. Tell him I said Hello. He rebuilt the engine in my GS way back around 86, 87 time frame.

Would love to be there but we are moving to new house and just can't swing it at this time.

  12. TexasT

TexasT Texas, where are you from

    Not to highjack but...

Ask Rusty to get hold of Jay and see if he can bring out his '72 GS. I'd love to see them both run.

Some how Dave Senderhof was involved in that cam change wasn't he? The Dihle '71GS was an awsome car. I think it was Dave's cam they put into the '71 wasn't it? Where is it today?

Jim Turner's Stage 2 was supposed to be a "real" stage 2. He told me one time that he bought the car from a guy in Kennedale, Texas. The Heads were in the trunk when he bought it. I do know it had some minitubs when he raced it allowing some extra tire(I remember thinking who would tub a Stage 2?). He was running a T350 with a custom planetary that was assembled at Phoenix Tranmissions out in Weatherford, Texas last time I saw it run at the Motorplex in Ennis. This had to be at least 15 years ago when I talked to him.

And to BBall Sam I am glad there was comroderie back then and they got your stage 1 ignition probs sorted out. I was the one that you rode with out to the Corvette Plant for the tour.

    Great memories for sure.

Steve, I'm late getting on here to answer that trivia question BUT I did know the answer!!
I remember the Strater/Rorabaugh tire swap.
I also remember the Dihle/Senderhauf cam swap. Senderhauf hurt something in his motor so his 107KB cam went into Norms Silvermist '72 and Dave JR drove it and they beat Rob Chilenski in the final of GS Jr Stock. Those were the days. It sure was a lot simpler to just be a spectator!!

My car is Silvermist because I really liked Norms car back then. I had a tough time deciding between that color and the blue on Chilenskis car.

Anyone remember the "vacuum rule" ordeal and who was involved???This was a couple years later but the same class.

    Pretty Trick.....

    Gary,

I remebered the "vacuum issue" too.....I was there watching the cars getting teched in. I never knew a Big Block Buick could maintain the same vacuum reading no matter what the motor was revved too  In fact, if you look at an old TA Catalog, there is a mention of this person's name under this product :TU:

This was also the same year that the white 1987 Mustang GT Convertible (a local guy from Bowling Green) was going to match race any Buick that wanted to run. He soon changed his mind after running into Ken Dielhe on the way over to the track. I think Ken had pulled 5 car lengths on him before letting out....awesome stuff !!!!!

    I sure miss the Holidome..........

Senderhauf broke the driveshaft that's why the 67 wasn't racing. We took the 1000 cfm TQ and the intake from the 67 plus the wheels and tires and Jim Bell brought Senderhauf's 107 with him which was the came we installed. Mopar Dan was a big help also with the swap of parts.

    What year was it.....

That the California Boyz had the "Controversial Intake" on their Red '70 GS.....you know the one that left the line with the left front tire about 3ft. in the air while the right tire was still on the ground ? Man was that car fun to watch...........

Great thread...I can account for another of the cars from this list...it's out in the barn. Mike Nussell sold me his red 70 Stage 1 car a couple of years ago. The car also spent some time as an F/S "Daddys Toy" down in FL. before Mike bought it. I think Mike told me he might have actually won the quick 16 somewhere back in the day.

I hope to get her back out again.
