The drop in education level has been going on for decades. Part of it is the parents fault, but the public school system is also partially at fault. It's been in decline for decades, no matter how much money we pump at it.

And I am sure that had this media existed back in the 80's, old folks like us on it would be lamenting the education level of our generation.

For many reasons outside of schools and parents, we have been "dumbing down" our society for decades.

I went to private school, where if you did not make the grade, you simply did not pass the test/course/grade level. No grading on a curve either. My friends at the time who attended the local public high school, were noticeably less educated than I was. Now, granted, the gearheads I hung with were not brainiacs.. non of us were, but they had trouble doing things that I had no problem with, and it was noticeable.. Simple math, correct speaking English... and anything like history or English literature? forget it.. Poetry?... ya right... I had to study that stuff, and read the classics... Dickens, London, Austen, Lee... it's all part of a well rounded education.. IN HIGH SCHOOL.. Plus more practical stuff, like consumer math, home ec for the girls, and shop class for the guys. Those were electives, but either gender could take them..

Not saying you could not get a good education in the public system, but you had to want to. If you didn't put the effort in, they just passed you along anyway.

I am sure there were just as many kids from public schools that got just as good, or maybe even a better education than I did, but for sure, there were a whole lot more Kids out of the public system that could barely function, than came from my school.

I am not blaming just the public schools, my parents providing a stable home environment was also a big factor.

Yeah, they link it to a charity to try and tug on your heartstrings, I always say “ not today” then I get the look like I’m a convicted murderer with an addiction problem and I’m living with my 92 year old mom and taking her SS And disability checks plus using her car to go buy drugs and booze

It was all foretold. There is a documentary about this very topic:

    I believe it!
My stepson they just shoved thru the grades just to get rid of him, I honestly think the lines and sayings schools have about how much they care is rubbish, they could care less, get em in get em out, trade schools are notorious for that, as long as mom and dad are paying your tuition junior, you can do whatever you want, you’ll graduate:rolleyes::D

My grandfather used to tell me stories about how rough they had it during the Great Depression. He grew up on a several hundred acre farm so they were A LOT more self sufficient than most people are today. You can crack jokes all you want about us “old fashioned” country people who aren’t as well versed in the latest technology as the younger generation, but when the SHTF (and it will, it’s just a matter of time), all the “skills” these kids learn in “school” today will be useless. Ever see a Black Friday fight over a TV that’s marked down $20? Just imagine how bad things will be when people are starving to death…

Canada stopped minting pennies in 2013. Soon after businesses began rounding cash purchases to the closest nickel. People whined and complained for a while, until they realized it wouldn't cost them precious extra cents. Purchases made with debit or credit cards weren't affected.

I once had a bag full of pennies collected over decades. It weighed around 60 lbs! What a royal PITA to roll them up so my financial institution would accept them. :D

Most young people I've dealt with can still calculate math.

My kid was laughing about other kids at school asking her what time it is, because the clock on the wall is analog. She's 15!

I guess what is old is the new.

25-30 years ago when I was single I always paid cash. A local bar I hung out at changed owners and they wanted ne and my buddies to put our drinks on a tab. Found out when you put drinks on a tab they charged you sales tax. Back to cash.

After getting married and having kids found the the $25-50 I carried in cash sometimes didn't cover my expenses so put it on the credit card. We pay on full every month so not a big deal. Have been doing this for 20 years mostly for the convenience.

Now many places are charging a handling/convivence fee (3-6%) if you use your card. Now I am back to carrying more cash when I come across these places to avoid the fees.

Yes, the credit card companies charge the businesses these fees so they’re just passing them on to you.

I've told my Boys MANY TIMES you give crap you get crap. Whatever it is you decide to do give it 110% plus it will come back tri-fold even if you scrub toilets.
Yes, being a more modern generation (38 & 40) they use credit cards a lot, especially when it comes to the business end as it's easier to keep track of, BUT CASH to them is still KING!!!
They both have "Street Smarts" just as we all did growing up, but more so today.

Jim..100%. I went to public school but it was pretty solid. Look there are always folks that underachieve, but we are failing most of our kids by not demanding high standards and setting high expectations. I have distant family that visit us from Germany, their teenage children are fluent in English and completely understand our 3 branches of government. They all attend public school and can attend college for a few thousand dollars for all four years

The no child left behind act was about the worst thing that happened to the education system. We are seeing the repercussions from that bill.

Where my wife works the employees need to be able to read a ruler by 32nds, 16ths, and so on. Most applicants under 25 can’t get it right. Another common question they get wrong is what is 50% of 1,000. There are some that get it, just not many.

"If you didn't put the effort in they just passed you along the way"
Jim ^^^ just like my high school..
Grew up in a city near Boston that had a higher level income and I believe my High School was rated #2 or 3 in MA.
Just to mention it was all from my Father busting his hump and my Mom being a stabilizing force of a housewife.
Also they bought the house in 1963 for only $35,000 when the area started to a upward trend again.

The school had the basic level, the standard level, the honor level and super advanced special classes.
It also had a good amount of tech courses, auto, metals, technical and architectual drafting, wood working, music etc.

It also had a SWS program, "school within a school" which was a separate type of school on the 4th floor.
Pretty ahead of it's time now that I think of it, as it had kids that couldn't fit in, gay, lesbian's, transgender "that I see it now" or anyone that had a social disorder. I don't know how they took all the required courses that takes the normal 4 years? but it was good they had help of some type.

I was mostly a standard student classes guy..
If you were gifted though, they gave you the WORLD but if not like you said they just passed you along till graduation..

A very small case in point is I got a 610 on my math SAT and didn't even break into the 1000 total score:rolleyes: I was born in the US too and i'm guessing since my parent only allowed me to speak Greek at home my English suffered?
Do you think any guidance counselor pulled me aside to work on my pathetic English SAT score? Nope.
