TA list 3/8" thick gaskets in their catalog. They want 36.00 for them though. There is a picture of them compared to the standard gaskets.

I'm pretty sure the ones you ordered are the ones I used, Bill. They are composite with a core, like the Chevy guys use on the SBC's. I'll check the number later when I go out to the garage. They are pretty thick, the cork ones seem to be getting thinner. I had tried rubber, cork, cork combo....I know what I'm doing, too. Checked the flatness of the covers, etc. Those gaskets just stopped the leaks dead! It's all I plan to use in the future. I think they may not have had tabs, though. Some people say to scuff the chrome where the gaskets go on chrome trans, VC's, Timing covers, etc. for a better mechanical bond if glueing.

I hope they turn out to be like the T/A ones Larry posted, albeit they only make the steel core types for the V6's. Bare cork gaskets for $35 is a tad rich and if they were rubber I would in a heart beat. Hopefully these Edelhosers do the trick! I do know none of the OEM thickness gaskets even reached the height of the lip on the covers.

I think Ill do a gasketless dry run tomorrow and make sure that ridge isn't holding the cover up. Maybe it needs to get tweeked up. If all else fails I do have a pair of nice used Stage 1 chrome covers ready to go... ws

Had a really big AH HA moment today... around noon I got a call that my gaskets and heater control valve (HCV) were in. Ready to rock in earnest! So the new Ebrock rigid gaskets came in a sturdy cardboard box, but alas, they MIC'd at .190". So now I start comparing apples to tangerines; The standard Felpro rubber jobs MICd up at .125". That's not a gross difference, but it gets better... I measured the lip on the OEM Stage 1 covers versus the brand new custom jobs. Hmmm, the custom jobs have a 1/4" lip and the OEM units are 3/16". Maybe enough to hang up on something? I went with the new .190 gaskets and old (3/16") covers for a pretty good fit. I did massage them a bit since they had been overtightened in the last 45+ years I'm sure...I also ran a 1/8" bead of 3M weatherstrip adhesive around the perimeter and the bolt holes and used the spreader bars on each bolt with a "snuggy" on a nut driver only. I really hope they don't leak! This is the new custom job. Camera didn't show up until after the fact!

So now I am on to the HCV. We looked for a 1972 GS 455 and it was N/A. So I went with a 1974 Electra 225 unit. The valve is supposed to stay closed with vacuum to open. This one is open with vacuum to close. I'm ready to put a friggin' gate valve in the line. ANYONE have a real part # for the correct valve? Heres the test... I was thinking of Jerry when I did it LOL... attachment[1].gif

Almost 1500 views... not bad, but no replies on the HCV??? I guess Ill hafta end tonight with a riddle:

WHO is the sharpest knife in the drawer?
Hint: There is NO ground strap on my rag joint... ws

BINGO!!! All I can say is when yer good, yer GOOD! That's why the 2 wires coming up the horn wire conduit. Now what about that HCV???? I suppose I can install an Apollo valve in there with a wire through the AC vent to pull it closed, but Ill hafta open the hood to pull it back open. I am frustrated and would like to install a new one before I charge the anti freeze.

Also, is there a vendor for that ground strap?? Should I just make one out of stainless? ws

    That strap is actually copper.

So...old hookah smoking water valve caterpillar, huh? These should be vac to open...
    GM 1231105 GM 1479664 Delco 15-5106 Four Seasons 74604
You will find some have a straight vac tube, some bent. Some have like a pie cut edge some don't. It should have a black foam insulator donut, you can add it. Located front hose valve to manifold about 6".
I think my Eddie's were thicker, they were on a plastic wrapped card. So it's unclear...you used the Eddie's?
BTW...you could just use some black wire and terminals on the rag joint, but I know you're fussy!

Man I am so wiped out... wife had a barium upper GI at 0700 today and I saw the heart doctor at 0900 plus a trip to the DMV and a friggin' haircut. THEN I got busy. LOL.

I returned the new valve I bought yesterday... It was open with vacuum to close. Ass backerds. Your 4 seasons number was close to one I found today; mine: 74602 and yours was 74604. I have a ton of other #'s to drag with me. Itll keep the kids at the motor parts busy for a while!

I did use the E-brock gaskets. They were .190" thick and the felpros were only .125 plus a height difference on the new vs. OEM covers lippses. They are soft rubber bonded to a rigid plastic core and pretty darn accurate.

I have a ground issue on my tilt column on the horn side. Theres no ground strap as pointed out by Larry Bluezilla.. . I cant find one anywhere so I am gonna make one. I have a spare braided firewall to block ground strap. Itll look good when I'm done, and believe you me, I am done. Need a nappy LOL... Stuff should be in tonight... ws

The # difference could be the size of the hose fittings. You will have to watch for that. Could be the same valve but 3/4" hose size or whatever. I think you will like the Eddie's. You should kick back for a while, Spring's still far away.

Thanks Frank! When youre 62 and summer barely lasts 5 months, ITS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!! That's why I start my winter work in OCTOBER! Meanwhile while doing the Buick., I am waiting for the trans to come back for my Harley. Another $700 estimate that turned into a 1400+++ nightmare. Thatll be a steady week of re-assembly, and then when the weather begins to break (theres an LOL in there somewhere!) I need to get started on my boat.

That one is merely tuning up a pair of 454's with oil changes, installing (mounting and piping) 2 BIG sea water strainers, and pulling all the lower windows out of the cabin and rebuilding all the rotten framework that holds them in place, from a SCAFFOLD ten feet in the air AND put two gallons ($250 EACH!) of anti-fouling paint on the bottom. I hafta ad, refloating 3 twelve foot sections (36 feet O.A.) of floating docks and moving them 1/4 mile up the river and securing them with a new to me (1970) 14' Mirro-Craft aluminum boat that I just picked up with a 5.5 Evinrude motor that hasn't run in 5 years.

Ya know we used to do all this stuff on a regular basis, plus work a 60 hour week, then I retired. Just happened to get old along the way and can at least work at my own pace now. Naps are your' friend... Then theres the honey do list(s). Gotta tackle the vent blower on the gas water heater tomorrow. A few drops of oil is cheaper than a $200 blower motor!

Maybe we'll sneak a vacation in this year and make a 500 mile boat trip. :TU::TU: ws

Well now; Hmmm... Made Italian Sausage and noodles for dinner AND another trip to Advance Auto. The counter guy calls me and says the 3 valves we ordered today (just for a try and see) were all in. I was there in 5 minutes. We bench tried the correct looking one and was good. Its a normally closed valve... The chinaman probably mistook a 6 for a 9 40 years ago and here we are today. This job was sourced locally, but look at the BIG picture with mail ordering, UPS trucks , man power etc etc, and who's the dummy? So for anyone here and for future reference, when yours fails, take a lookie here. I'm gonna try to list this so it makes some sense...

Its really peculiar when you look up an application and it says Not Available, yet with a part number, tons of stuff comes up. This isn't news to me having owned several old boats and cars over the years. Just use due diligence, perseverance, or at least some Juris Prudence.

Frank, as we discussed the one I had ordered for a '74 Electra came in as a Normally Open Valve. INCORRECT! FROM THE BOOK the Everco
(4 seasons number) was H-1946... RETURNED. At that point I had my number and yours. Mine was 74602 and that's for a 350 that screws into the intake. Your number was a 74604 and that's a winner !! Normally closed and identical to the OEM unit. The catalog(s) all show these both for a 455 application. Hmmm.

So the 74604 was an Everco (4 seasons number) and good. The Advance auto number is (drum rollll) 5918
    Delco Moraine #15-5106 5918
    GM # 1231105 5918
    GM # 1479664 5918

All the Big Box old car parts places wanted $35 plus the kite. AA was 19.95 plus 5% for the Guv. What the HAY???? Da Big guy is gonna sleep good tonite!
Once again Frank (and Bob in Brussels!) Thank you! Gonna light off the boiler tomorrow and do burnouts in the garage all day... theres snow, ice and salt all over up here LOL... ws

Italian sausage and noodles after a trip to the heart Dr.??? I guess confidence is high, huh? Hopefully, the water valve you get now will be the right one. It's interesting about the parts at places like AA, NAPA, RockA, etc. When you look up parts for a GS 455, or even a Skylark 455, parts don't show up on the screen. Sometimes stuff like tie rods, or whatever, aren't listed, but they are the same for a 6cyl "lark, 350, GS 455, etc. GM #'s are really crazy, you can sometimes have 1/2 dozen #'s for the same part.
Your boat sounds like fun...and not! Tuning the engines would be fun if you can get at 'em. Painting the hull with 250. a gal paint not so much! The more toys you have............

BREAKING NEWS !!!! THIS JUST IN... Dateline Two Rivers; Fat old retired mechanic passes ROCKET SCIENCE CLASS. Film after a word from our sponsor...

Today I kept the simple stuff for last. I installed the new HCV and 3 gallons of 50/50 anti freeze and spun the air starter over a few times with the cylinder drain cocks open for a quick blow down before a light off. About 5 pumps on the gas pedal and the bastard lit right off. It ran long enough to establish oil pressure then stalled. Timing was BY EYE and way retarded. Two more ons and offs and its close. I let it run for about 30 minutes and didn't find any leaks (AF or OIL!) and the HCV works just like it was supposed to. I thought mission control was gonna keep me on the O ring detail LOL... A few more odds and ends and we'll be did... ws

    Mission Control gave the go ahead for launch sequence... "After 1 minute, launch vehicle is down range with all systems normal. Separation sequence ready to begin";

right! In about another month or two when the roads are clean! ws

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... tis good to be able to fool the judges LOL. The re-pop HCV protector rings appear to be cast out of a black silicone type of rubber, AND they are like $22.00. Ya just know I hafta make some of my own stuff once in a while and that ring did turn out well, if I say so myself. Its a length of 3/8 black rubber fuel line sliced lengthwise and the carefully wrapped with 3M high voltage self vulcanizing rubber tape. Stretching it as you go around it self seals and you cant even find the end. It followed the profile perfectly. But thanks just the same Frank; Ill take that as a compliment.

The last time I looked it was about $30 a roll, and being at the power plant, electricians would get a roll from the store room, use a few feet and toss the rest, usually the box wasn't too far behind. I hate to waste stuff! ws

Today is clean up two shops' day. Trash and tools and use parts all over the place(s) and I hafta get ready for the H-D trans job due back Monday or Tuesday I hope. Going back together is always easier; Its cleaned and I don't hafta try and figure out what the PO used for fasteners through an inch of greasy road dirt! ws

    Need a laugh today?? ws

After President Trump's executive order to proceed with the Dakota Pipeline, American and Canadian officials toured the Dakota Pipeline route today. A spokesman said the tour went well. The fly-over was in an unmarked plane. Sioux and Comanche's don't get along.

Anyways, the shop (operating room) is ready for the big brain transplant on the H-D after the oil pump and timing chain job on the BAD LAD. Still waiting for a single hardened spacer for final assembly and then move the launch vehicle to the pad... ws
