After getting some water in the engine while on the dyno I pulled the intake and oil pan to inspect and clean up the mess. Once it was all back together R&R the filter and put fresh oil in it. When I removed the filter something clunked inside it. This is what I found when it was cut open Is there a part number for a high flow oil filter? Figured K&N was about as good as they got.
X3. I have used one for at least a decade. Never buy another paper filter. http://www.system1filters.com/oilfilters.htm http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sof-209-312361/overview/
If your going to use a paper filter I use AC or Wix. I run a short System 1 on the wagon. I should use the long housing only because it has more screen area to move oil through. Just don't have the room.
I only use the "Systems 1" filters on my Skylark engines. Have been since they first came out in the early 90's. I use the long filter most of the time only changing it out with the short filter when I attach my 4" Ram-Air hoses when racing. The 4" hose on that side won't clear the long filter, but just squeeks by the short filter. Briz, ever wonder how I kept those journals on the crankshaft you are using in this engine in such good shape after 21 years?.... Now you know. Larry
Id like to use the System 1 set up but for now just need to get this in the car and running. Im sure in time I'll find a deal on a used set up. Cant have a brand new unit on my Recycled race car
After all those years of on and off one of mine also developed a leak back in the mid 90's. It was a couple days before the GS Nationals so on my way into town I stopped at the Bowling Green Caterpillar Sevice center. One of the parts guys was nice enough to let me go through the many drawers of 0-Rings until I found the correct size, (the large main 0-Ring for the cap). When we got back to Milwaukee I ordered up a full 0-Ring replacement kit through Systems 1. I keep a kit in stock now, can't rely on every town I'm in to have a CAT Dealer. Larry
Changed them once and it stopped fora a few weeks then started leaking again... Very slight leak. Still a great filter.. It doesn't leak anymore than my oil pan... Lol
I've been looking at these pictures and I have been trying to figure out just what in tarnation happend here. Is that actually how the filter element was when it was in the shell? If so I would be letting K&N know what you have there. Also it looks like there is a lot of metal particles in both pictures or is that just the debris from cutting it open? I do see a dremel in the background. Larry
I agree, for a filter with metal end caps to have that kind of failure seems extreme to say the least. Cardboard end caps I might understand but not the metal ones.
Yepp thats how it came off when I cut it open. Unscrewed the filter and something was clunking around in there. There was a lot of alumn shavings in the filter. I believe they came from the rocker arms lightly rubbing the spring retainers. They all sort of self clearanced themselves. I also lost about 2 inch of dip stick. Thinking it went on the wrong side of the main girdle when I shoved it down into the hole and hit the crank or rod caps. I found about an inch and it was marked "add 1" with one line. the rest from there down was MIA. Thats a good idea about K&N. Think I'll do that today. The engine had racing 50 in it and it was around 50* that morning.I drained it and refilled with 15/40 before the pulls. Still showed around 80 psi @ 5500 RPM
