Congrats I ran a best of 8.096 at 85 mph with a 1.8 60foot time no converter almost the same combo get a good set of slicks and a converter I bet you can be in the 7.90's welcome
I myself haven't ran slicks in close to 10yrs , at your power level id have some MT 275 60 Pro's the car WILL be quicker and faster on DR's, a 9.5in 3500 -3800 flash would get those 60's in the high 1.60's at least. If the car is just a strip toy with limited street duty id go with a 4k to 42k stall You have to hit the tires hard to work the car
My tourqe converter is a boss hog 2800. According to TA performance the cam (290-94h) recommends even a lower converter. Is it ok to go for a higher number because if that's what it takes to see a 7.9 at leased I'll go for it. What are the pros and cons?
IMO the overall combo is just off, need to lose the stock intake and put some cam in that thing! If you have a manual valve body and 390gears chances are its not a DD and a weekend stress reliver ,that being said if your just ttrying to put your current combo in the 7's consistently then yes a 35 to 3800 converter will do it with out question ,your converter may can be restalled if its a 245 core if its a 11in which most 2500 to 2800 are then im not sure what or if it can be set higher . If it cant go with a different brand than the Hogg. Only pro I see is goin 7.8s maybe little quicker Con being little less fuel mileage and increased face smileage Also some carb adjustments could help the 60 and the other 600ft , make sure the pump shot is what it wants Buicks love a fat fuel curve especially on the bottom, if pump shot is lean it will not move , and on the Converter ,im not sure where P.R. is but I use a fella out of Asheville NC he is a torque Converter brain and has picked up all our cars , PM me for contact info if interested
what I can add as far as carb. is its 850 double pumper speed demon 84 front jets 91 rear jets right now . when I ran 8.3 a year ago without slicks it had 78 front and 84 rear.
I think the converter is holding you from the 7's. looking at you mph,Usually a off the shelf converter or one from someone who doesn't do many for Buicks get the stall wrong.I've had to send many back for a re-do many times. they are usually set up for chevys.our 455's make a lot more torque than a chevy and what works for them is too much slip for us and we go thru it on the top end too. JW here on the board makes a good converter based on combo.I've put them in several customers cars and they work well, good stall on the bottom but lock up on the top end. They are more than the weekend specials but a good converter isn't cheap. My wifes "X" has stock iron intake and exhaust manifolds, iron stage1 heads,a Q-jet carb, Old 118 hyd cam,9.7 compression, 2800 rpm good quality converter, full exhaust, 3.42 gears, and sticky tires and runs 12.8' without any trouble, best of 12.78 at 106 mph. As was said here before,a different gear may help too,3.55 would be a good choice. gary
I run a TCI 10 inch super street fighter, flashes to 3800, car weighs 3925 with 28.5x15 3.90 gears run 7.80 to 7.85 on crap track. More converter will definitely help and is a blast! When the track hooks 60's are 1.61 to 1.65.
with a 455 you will probably get a couple of passes out of if (vega converter), but you run the chance of balooning the converter and possibly hurting your engine. Not worth taking a chance in my opinion.
I have the (Vega converter) and if I install it I will make 4 passes in the 1/8 at the most. What is ballooning really all about. Thanks for the advice.
It would be better if someone here has a know working convertor but you are looking at 400 or better for a good stall for a big block. I got screwed on a refresh from ATI on not checking the numbers and they sent me a 454 Nitrous convertor and it only stalled at 3000 RPM's. I got a stocker 8" from a C stock Buick racer and it stalls at 5000 RPMs. I might have done it wrong on telling them I had more HP than I had. I still have that convertor and when the time comes I will send it back in and tell them what I want. They told me at ATI that as long as you give us the most information as in time runs and power of the engine and the drivetrain info they will do the best to make it work for you. They said the more info will make it work better and now I believe that!
The thing I noticed with the stocker convertor is, it felt like it was pushing me in the back after I got in 3rd gear!
I heard that Vega convertors can't hold up to a Buick power! But if a convertor specialist makes one for a Buick then he has to stand by it.
What took out my last engine. I caught it in time in that it only hurt the thust bearing. I had 0.075" movement in the crank (you want about 0.006") much more and it would have got into the crank and or block. By balloning of the converter means it pushes on the crank shaft causing the shaft to move forward.
Yes like Mike said. It will force your crankshaft forward and then the destruction of the mains and possibly the rods and then KABLAM!!! another 455 block wasted.:ball:
Maby im old fashioned or something, but whare are you racing a 1/8 mile track, the last time I checked it was the quarter mile time that matters. are we just taking baby steps ? Do you have to work your way up to the 1/4 mile?
