I have to add... that although I posted disappointment about sponsors vs parts used, I was very excited about the show. I watch it every weekend, but Ive watched this weekends episode 3 times since yesterday. :TU:

I always wondered why they do the sponsor donated parts angle. Why not have a set budget for the build like Monster Garage used to do? Then after all the building is over the car could be auctioned off and the money spent on parts would be recouped. Maybe even do a charity auction and then all the build costs would ultimetly be written off as a charitable donation. I think you'd be able to build with a little more freedom and it would make the viewer more engaged since it's a budget build just like he or she would be using at home.

How do you think you would have built it differently if the producers said you have $5,000 to spend how ever you'd like on the engine?

The powerblock is possible because of the sponsors. The whole show structure is centered around the automotive aftermarket industry. Its not so much about the budget for the project as it is about a budget for the entire series that is made possible by the sponsors.

For the cam they used and the level of head porting that was afforded to the build the motor did just fine. I wish that maybe a smaller series from comp cams was used but still it did well.

The only people who I would want to recognize the Buick 350s potential after this episode are the ones who actually can appreciate how well it performed given the parts put into it, the lightly ported heads and see the room for improvement that is there.

I sure hope to see a wilder build in the future but I still loved this episode and enjoyed getting to see some air time for my favorite engine.

Maybe a GM division-wide Small Block build off is in order:beer

I don't know if there was much more to get out of that carb. The guy's at (the carb shop) did a bang out job on that thing. That really was the one off of the motor from B&R Auto wrecking. They did a stage 3 job on it and for a little factory Q-jet that thing ran awesome. Shure a good carb would have made a little more but that thing ran great fopr a little stock carb.

I think a lot of people are forgeting that the early 70's heads are the good ones. the later model's did not fair so well and even with the light port work we were really trying to get them back to the early style flow numbers. Mike at Perf. auto machine got about 240 cfm out of them. If I had time to souce a set of early style heads we would have. Also the early style oil threw the shaft and not the push rods. I really wanted to oil threw the pushrods so with time restaints that's what we decides to go with. I think with the early styl heads and convering to oil threw push rods with the port work we would have had better HP numbers, It also had a full exhaust on the dyno with 2 1/2 exhaust pipes and mufflers. I could have cheated and ran no exhaust after the headders and done some other dyno tricks but then who would that benifit claiming fake numbers. I will never try to cheat up the numbers for the dyno. I built that motor the same way I would have for a customer paying for the job. The cam selection is in the air. A TA cam might have run better, they obviously have the time into their R&D for them, but I still feel that that cam was a pretty good one for the street without throwing a lot of money in it.

John, I just watched the episode and thought it was great. Thanks for being on the buick board. I have an idea for those of you wanting to see a buick 350 with more horsepower. Being as how most of the vendors in our community are relatively small in respect to guys like comp, edelbrok etc, why not get a fund going. If even 300 of our membership throws in 20 bucks a piece to go to the vendors for head work and whatever. Let me know what you guys think. It would ultimately be up to Horsepower TV to make the decision. Thanks again John. Pete

I'm not jealous at all, just pissed I have to right the wrongs that are portrayed on that show and others.
And because I did a couple of vids I have an idea of what it takes to do a show. It really wouldn't take that much more to make it right.
You mentioned that the people editting the show don't have the knowledge, you don't see a problem with that? That tells me they don't really give a ****.
And i spoke to Joe Mondello a couple years ago about the show they did on him and his build. Guess what, he wasn't happy with the end product either, but it was too late by the time it aired.
I'm glad to see you're doing something other than mainstream stuff, I appreciate the effort. Now if they could just take the same effort to make sure it's factually correct.

And I have a correction for you. They mentioned the duration was .295/.313, so that's 295 and 313 thousands of what? It should be 295/313 at .050, there's no decimel point in the numbers describing the amount of duration. Like I said, they're either idiots or just don't care.

Well for starters you don't have to do anything. I've seen your video's on youtube. They are cute. You haven't a clue what it takes to make a show of this caliber. I've seen the hits you get. You are seriously pissed becouse someone put a decimal point in there. I think you should stick to editorials in print. I have spoken with the late Joe Mondello as well for several years now. I have actually worked with him outside of the show. He wasn't happy with anything unless he did it. He was and forever will be the man. I hope you are in no way comparing yourself with him. Like you two guys sit aroud and correct other people's projects like you are the man too. Like I said I've seen your video's and if I ever want to change out a GM HEI cap I'll be shure to give you a ring. I would really like to say that the coment about Galley's dad aren't needed. If the show is so bad for you then stick to watching youtube videos of yourself changing oil and wiper blades.

The interesting thing about TV is that they make mistakes with all types of shows when the editing crew is not knowledgeable in the type of work being done. I am a carpenter, and see the same kinds of mitakes on home improvement shows all the time. You will drive yourself nuts if you think you need to, or have the responsibility to, or the authority to, correct what others put on TV. Yes we all have a right to our opinion, and we have the right to be wrong if we don't care. I am happy to see a SBB on Horsepower, I would love to see a 500hp motor built, but don't expect it since most people, even Buick guys will opt for a 455 for those levels with the time and money investment. A big thanks to John for getting stage one on the air, and hopefully more in the future.

I think we all know the chance of a big dollar SBB build on TV is Not likely to happen. I would be intersted in seeing a bunch of the currently available cams from TA, Lunati, Crower, etc. compared to see what the HP and torque #'s would be to get an idea on what can be made easily. Especially compared to stock power levels from the good earlier motors. Maybe that would be an easier sell, kind of a bang for your buck, step two thing. But I know little about TV stuff so feel free to ignore my ideas.:Do No:

    john,

i did not get to see the show, BUT there are a few of us who have taken the 350 to the wild side and still have used basically the same vendors. but the engineering done and parts used made some good h/p numbers w/o having engineering done and parts made by the major manufacturers millions that are invested in the 7-11 brands. we do a LOT with what little is available for us.
if you decide to do upgrades on the 350 and need to borrow the abstract parts or ideas we use to make numbers, give a yell.

alas, if a s/p and heads were commerically available for the 350.....it would be a whole different story.
