    Due to some statements on the "Collapsed Lifter" thread I was inspired to go to the ZDDPplus web site and do a little research. I became concerned over the statement that Rotella or oils designed for diesel engines foamed at higher rpms.
    I don't remember what the rpm was maybe 3500. Anyway they discuss the use of diesel type oils and while there was some negativity there was no mention of
    foaming. So where does this come from? Is it a fact or another myth? I would like to know as I have been using Rotella 15/40 for quite some time. My engine seldom sees 4000 rpms but who knows what the future might hold. I am however going to stop using Rotella and go to a good brand of oil and use the additive:TU: I'm thinking Mobil-1 with ZDDP or I may stick with a mineral based oil with the additive.

    rotella reformulated the oil with less zddp as well, Not the same as it was.

    You are right Dave which brings up another reason for quitting I'm running out of the Older rotella. You probably remember when there were postings on here about Rotella changing their fomula. I went and bought a couple of cases of the old type.

    Well fellas, after reading these articles, its time to get off the deisel oil band wagon and go back to castrol and bottles of ZDDPlus.

    Valvoline Racing Oil contains a high level of ZDDP still. It ios not cheap by any means.

    We have different EPA requirements here than they do up north I think.
    So strict that it is my understanding Caterpiller has quit or is going to quit making truck engines. I don't know this for sure it's just what I have heard. some of the diesels already have catalytic converters
    I myself believe what I read yesterday about the higher additive ratio in diesel
    oil washing out some of the zinc and also reducing the lube quality of
    the base oil. Even if the 15/40 truck oils are for gas and diesel the gas engines in the trucks are not turning anywhere near what the passenger car engines
    are sometimes turned. Since the cam shafts in 4 stroke engines gas and diesel turn at half the rpms of the crank and the commercial engines
    especially the diesels turn so slow there isn't a lot of valve spring pressure
    required vs a high rpm passenger or race type engine. So the truck engines can probably afford to give up some zinc but probably not so with a performance motor. I just threw motor in for the piss and moan club.:laugh:

    What do y'all think about going to a synthetic?

    I've been running Mobil 1, 10-40 in my 2002 F-150 SuperCrew since it was new and it's doing fine.


    Is anyone running the mixed synthetic/standard oil?
    Was thinking about that for the roadster's BB Buick engine.

    I am going to give a synthetic a whirl with a ZDDP additive. What part of NW Az are you in? I have a friend who live near Wiikiup ( spelling?) Az.

    Bob,
    I've always used Red Line synthetic with some sort of additive in the 10 years I've owned my GS. I started with EOS, then BG MOA, and now the ZDDPlus. Haven't had a problem yet. I have my transmission set up to shift at 5500, so the engine sees that regularly on the street and at the track.

    Cheapest I've seen it for is about 8.50 a quart if you buy a case. I used to get it at www.myoilshop.com and they used to offer a discount if you were a GSCA member. I could get it from them for about 7.00 a quart. Cheapest I've seen it is here for a case.

    IMHO, Red Line and Amsoil are the best synthetics out there. I seem to get a little better oil pressure with Red Line. That is why I use it.

    Jegs sells a lot of Red Line on E-bay. In fact, while I was looking, I noticed that Red Line now has an ZDDP additive of their own.

    Amsoil has a 10-40 with high zinc content so avoids the extra additives, works well. AMO-QT ( 1 quart) is the code for it I think, their website has all the info on additive levels. Just another option.
