Sorry guys, but I have yet another block ID question for you. I finally looked at my engine code between the #5 and #7 spark plug holes and saw SF 084 there. AS I understand it, its a 1970 engine, but some controversy over exactly what application. I am trying to find the block part number and did numerous searches and had no luck. Can I see these numbers without disassembling anything? The heads have been changed for sure, so I am not going to use that as reference. Can the Buick gurus out there confirm my info?

EDIT: I pulled the valve cover and saw 1231786 on there. From what I saw, it is also 1970 heads, but these were not on this engine when I put it in. BUt good news nevertheless.

Definately a '70 big car motor(Electra, Rivy, etc.) Decent heads but small valve.

    Brian,

SF code was for the 1970 455, 370 HP with 10.5:1 compression.

Used in LeSabre Custom 455, Wildcat Custom, Electra 225 & 225 Custom and the Riviera.

Look for castingnumber 1231738 on the block.

Buick stamped the vehicle's VIN on the right front side of the block until 1970, and on the left side from 1970 on.

    Cylinderheads # 1231786 are 69 CC 1970 455 heads.

    Yep

And the 084 is an internal GM code (nothing to do with the engine or components), probably relates to who and when it was assembled.

I think 084 is the production date. That would be the 84th day of 1970, which is March. Not sure.
You can see the casting date on the trans bellhousing mating
    flange.
