Wasn't shure where to post this as it is unclear where the problem resides. Pulled into the driveway last night and went into reverse to back into the garage. Normally reverse shifts in with a good thump but this time it was like a ping. Hit the gas and it feels as if I have the parking break on. By keeping the r's up, I can overpower whatever is holding me back but if I let off it grinds to a halt. Tried it this morning, same thing. Forward gears fine, trans fluid full. I went to push it back into the garage, put it in neutral, and I can't push it back, like it is in park, however, I can push it forward. Can't push it in reverse either. It is a 68 w/ 455, TH400, and 8.2 in. 10 bolt in back. Not sure what the cause is, maybe trans, maybe rearend? Thanks in advance. Jon S.
If it was me I would disconnect the drive shaft from the rear end and see if you can push it back then. That would at least tell you which one, trans/rear end, is the problem.
I have a hard time getting my car to go into reverse and then when it finally does go into reverse its a rough reverse almost like a clunking sound. Fluid levels look fine but i do notice that I have a transmission fluid leak. Help please! Thanks!
Just jack the rear end up, rotate the wheels manually back and forward and listen for noises in the differential.
