Does NHRA have a rule about sealing the trunk from the interior, better than the factory did it? Now that my battery is back there must I do some more metal fab work? Please help the un educated.
If you are running a sealed battery box that is vented to the outside of the vehicle you do not need a firewall according to the NHRA rulebook. If it's not a sealed box then you have to have a firewall. Although I see most guys using the standard black poly box with only the backseat and they are allowed to race sooo. o No:
So like a plastic tube running out the back or something would probably work to vent it, right? I have the black plastic box now, and the rear seat, but just don't want to get to a track and have some body say I can't race. Thanks for the reply.
By "sealed", the rules infer that no gasses can escape the battery box except through the external vent...thus the need to seal the top as well. Most of the good aluminum boxes have the seal, as do the blue plastic Moroso kits if I remember correctly. Devon
If you install a trunk mounted battery, it must be sealed in a approved battery box or a rear firewall must be installed. Also you need a battery disconect switch at the rear of the car that will also disable the alternator when shut off.
Thanks guys, I should have posted more info... but I do have the shut off switch done and now I shall proceed to the nearest race shop to buy a SEALED battery box.
