I just bought a '68 GS convertible. The top of the winshield frame has a section that is covered with vinyl. This has some rust spots and holes in the vinyl covering.

What do you use and how do you repair this?

    Any and all suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks

    Remove all vinyl.
Use acetone to remove any adhesive residue.

Once metal is in full view...you can grind away the rust. Install patch pieces from the bottom side and weld in-place. Use a skim coat of filler, phosphoric acid, prime and paint.

    Thanks for the reply.

How do I remove the metal strip? Is it easy to dismantle the windshield header? I see that Year One has a replacement vinyl cover for this, is it something special or can I just use any vinyl? Do I just glue it down to the metal or is there something in between?

    Thanks again.

You don't remove the metal strip...you remove all vinyl and all glue residue.
Next you clean any rust holes.....remove bad metal. Fabricate patch panels/pieces, weld them in....use filler to make the surface flush.

You can buy the vinyl from any trim shop...nothing special.
