I've recently read somewhere that the SP1 intake will not allow for adequate hood clearance on my 455. Mind you, this is a '66 Skylark... Anyone have any real-life experience with this? I'd hate to have to cut the hood, but the intake is port&gasket matched to my heads ou: Help?
Ed, it's definitely something you should check out. The SP1 is 1 3/4" taller than stock. Take some measurements to see exactly how much room you have. Maybe a drop base air cleaner is all you need.
I know it sits a lot higher than the stock manifold, plus the motor will have a 3/4" NX plate on it! Anyone have actual experience with a 455 in a '66 body? They didn't come from the factory (obviously), so I don't even know that a stock manifold wouldn't have hood clearance problems
I've seen it done but though the carb fit under the hood it was too close to the hood for proper breathing/performance. And an air cleaner to fit was an issue.....
Is this something that could be remedied by, say, a Stage 2 hood scoop? :eek2: I'm just concerned with the carb clearing under the hood for starters...
I have a 1" spacer between the stock manifold and the q-jet with a chrome 3x14 air cleaner and it just fits. You can barely make out the indentation of the air cleaner in the hood fiberglass. I need the spacer to raise the carb up enough to hookup the 200R4 tranny.
Under the Hood I have used a K-B Wilcat manifold on my 67 and it fit. Yes you could use a Stage 2 scoop. If I remember correclty I used the Wilcat with a spacer and the carburetor was not up in the scoop on my 67. I currently run an old OFFy 2 x 4 with spacers and AFB's on my 67 and the carbs. are 2" from the hood. Jim N.
Thanks for the 1st hand input! I rarely run an air cleaner (yes, I know... very very bad ou: ) so I feel a lot better about using the SP1. I'd HATE to cut my hood up, so I'd rather cross that bridge when(if) I come to it. I doubt I'll be changing from a BBB to anything else, although I have entertained the idea of a Intercooled 3.8SFI V6 :Comp:
