I assume this question has been asked a thousand times before but what would be a good candidate for disk brakes for my 1970 Wildcat? Are all B bodies compatible, eg; could i take the system outta 1971 lesabre?

    Thanks

It could possibly apply to a '66. Separate sources have informed me that brakes off a similar year Impala or the like, should fit. I assume, due to the popularity of these cars that a big brake kit should readily be available. It was also stated that big aluminium, finned drums or big finned aluminium drums should be sourced but if they're not standard fitment, i'm not sure where to look for these.

Check out E-bay item # 230407104983 . If you dont have these drums on your car they would be a GREAT IMPROVMENT over the cast iron drums that were standard. With these drums and the rest of the brake system in proper order you dont need disc brakes.

Of the 1966 big cars, LeSabre was the only one that got cast iron front drums from the factory. Wildcat, Electra and Riviera all got the big aluminum finned front drums which work great unless you're seeing 1/4 mile trap speeds in excess of say 110 mph, then they're iffy from a fade standpoint. My old trick was to brake hard after the finish until I just noticed some fade, then off again for a couple seconds of cooling & back on again. I always took the last turn off so I wouldn't have to beat the brakes up too badly. My buds would tease me but I didn't care.

FYI, I wouldn't go through the hassle of installing factory front disc setup on one of the big cars since replacement parts like rotors and calipers are only available used and are virtually impossible to find in decent shape. www.scarebird.com lists a conversion using later model parts for the '65-'70 big cars that's already been tried by some members here. Use the search term scarebird.

Again thanks.. I was wanting a conversion because I didn't want those big ugly drums behind the rims I'm putting on and I always herd that roters are better. I do have the aluminium drums by the way and if I don't have anything to worry about I will just rebuild them and be done......

i have been really happy with the aluminum drums on my cat since i went through them. I found everything i needed on rock auto except the drums themselves. if you stand on them hard they stop surprisingly well considering it is such a big car.

I completely agree, if the big drums are gonna be enough, I'm quite happy to keep 'em. This big mother ain't goin down the strip any time soon

    Thanks everyone

Yes but they're rebuilt used pieces, not new correct? With the right tools you can rebuild used parts yourself and save money.
